I am an intermittent game player - loved all the BF series, played some Skyrim and Fallout and Bioshock and occasional COD over the years on my trusty xbox 360.

I saw BF1 is out, but I need an Xbox one to play.

So, what do I do? Get the xbox one, or go for a gaming computer? I used to play BF on my computer years ago (BF1942, modded Desert Combat, BF Vietnam) but its really old and not upgradable.

Any thoughts out there? I really dont need a new computer - I have a couple perfectly functional laptops for non-video intensive stuff - and the XBox seems like a bargain compared to a new gaming rig.

Or is BF1 not going to be worth it - maybe I should try the Halo series, since I've never played it before.

Since the game is only in Beta, which is over, I'd wait and see. BF4 is doing really well. BF1 is got everyone wondering...

I've never played on a Box, only on PC. I don't know the difference, but I've heard the game is "bigger, wider, and more dynamic" on PC but who knows what that means?

BTW BF1 takes a Nvidea 660 or better. I have a 670 so I'm good, but jumping up to a new card is expensive. And remember, you build your computer to run your video card, so plan on dropping some money on a good board, hot chip, and 8 gigs plus of good memory. Get a good sized SSD for your main drive. If BF4 is a clue, it got fat to the tune of 58 Gigs! Brrrrrp!

Oh, BF is much better on a computer. Lots more ability to communicate, etc.

But I'm guessing a decent computer will cost 3x what an Xbox will, plus the Xbox doubles as a blu-ray/4K player.

If you really caare about the gaming experience, fork out for a decent computer. If you just want to play for fun, then get an Xbox. Also pick up Forza Horizon 2 or 3 and Halo: Master Chief Collection, and you won't get bored for a while.

Anything put out by EA deserves scrutiny.

If you want a good WWI game, get Verdun. Insanely hard to play (one shot kills), but really does a good job re-enacting WWI.

Wait for black friday and grab a ps4 or Xbox one. I'd suggest a ps4.

I just got BF1, haven't had a lot of time to play it but I'm about to take a vacation from work and play a lot.

So far it's pretty awesome.

I have to admit...as a big fan of Verdun, I'm a little disappointed in BF1.

"Verdun" is a WWI documentary.
"Battlefield 1" is like Michael Bay's "Pearl Harbor."

Everything I am reading on BF1 suggests the PC platform has the best gaming experience with this one. Communication, graphics, etc.

Buy a motorcycle, a smoker, a boat (with fishing gear) and DO something that actually MEANS something. Do you want to be the grandpa that sits around telling his grandkids about playing Bioshock or the one taking them out to catch their first fish??? Would you rather lock yourself in a room or see the Southwest from the back of a two-wheeled machine? Would you rather spend hours alone or hours with your friends and neighbors sharing the pulled pork, brisket, smoked chicken, home-made sausages, etc. you made??

And why does smoking, motorcycling and fishing 'mean something'?

Why is spending hours with your friends eating meat somehow more valuable than my spending hours playing BF with my friends?

And why do you assume I can't do all of those things and ALSO play video games (which my grandkids one day will probably think is pretty damn cool)??

What's Verdun?

A game?

Verdun - WW1 multiplayer FPS Game

Yep. It's an indie game, so don't expect cutting edge graphics, but the gameplay itself is much better than Battlefield. There's a real sense of battlefield tug-of-war in Verdun. Battlefield 1 is basically "Call of Duty with WWI weapons," even though they're not very realistic.

I spent much of my life hiking, backpacking, a little fishing. I even had a motorcycle once. I've ridden a bicycle coast to coast across Italy, from the Adriatic to the Med. Also rode my bicycle around Lake Champlain.

And I just love video games.

Had we but world enough and time, doing both would be no crime. So I did.

Because the people I know who are starting to look back on their lives consistently say the same kind of thing. Regrets for not taking better advantage of the time they had spending it with friends and family. IMO, video games are one of the worst things that get in the way of these kind of relationships.

Yet I spend time with friends playing. And we form lots of real life relationships doing it.

It's amazing you know people looking back at their lives bemoaning the time they spent playing video games. In fact, it's so amazing, I call bull**** on it.

I bought it, pre-order actually, and I am a veteran BF gamer, played them all. By far, BF1 is the worst of the franchise. I'm not even sure I can articulate why, it just feels wrong, all of it, tanks are way over-powered, and yes I get it, at the end of the war they WERE over-powered, but in this game, you own a tank and you're basically invincible. The weapons of WWI were primitive, the weapons of BF1 are not even remotely realistic to the era. It looks like WWI game but it doesn't feel like one when you play it. I am really disappointed that I dropped $90 on the premier edition. I went back to BF4 after about 20 hours of BF1 gameplay. It just isn't for me. Maybe I'll try it again in a few months, who knows, but in my opinion it's the worst of the franchise, hands down.

I guess I should update.

I got an Xbox One S and BF1.

Its pretty cool - but I agree, its not necessarily the best. It has a Call of Duty kind of feel to it to me, and I'm not sure why. Maybe if I played something other than public servers, it might be better, but no one is ever on voice and teamwork seems to be lacking.

Tanks arent that powerful... they seem pretty easy to take out with antitank grenades. I've got limited experience in aircraft, but they seem fun and I never could fly a jet of heli well, so I like the flying. I agree about the WW1 weapons. Its not reality.

But I like the massive number of people playing. Huge maps, the horses are good, although I cant figure out how to fight on them, and the graphics and the destructive environment is great.

My favorite BF game by far was Desert Combat - a mod of BF1942, which was just fantastic on the PC.

Because it doesn't have a "World War I" flavor at all. As said previously, the weapons are borderline fictional (seriously? A WWI shotgun is lethal from 50 yards??). Reloading is way too fast and smooth. It's "Michael Bay" World War I.

They're way too agile. REAL tanks back then were half as fast, and very slow to turn. Their purpose wasn't to snipe from back alleys. They were to roll over trenches, and bash head-long into the opposition.

I admit that flying in the game is fun, but this is the least realistic part of the game. Any kind of altitude climb over about 65° would cause the engine to stall. In this game, you can literally climb straight up without any drag on the engine at all.

64 players is not fun for me. So many people, you're lucky to live longer than 10 seconds.

As I said before, Verdun is a better game. It just doesn't have the pretty graphics.

I'll just point out that a 'realistic' WW1 shooter would be very very boring.

BF 1942 had a WW1 mod. Very realistic. Very slow.

Verdun does a good job with trench warfare. There's a real sense of tug-of-war, and frontline changes (back and forth). The phrase "keep your head down" rings true (unlike BF1, where it's just a 64-man free for all). It's also cheap. I think it was $20.

I have an xbox one, if you just play casually, it is a good investment, but if you a better experience, pc is the way. I mostly use my xbox for when I am lazy, just want to pop a game in grab my controller and play. The downside to xbox and it's counterpart the ps4 is that they both tend to heavily restrict mods, with few game exceptions, while the pc gives you free reign on that.
