So I got all interested in maybe trying to play DAoC. That's "Dark Age of Camelot" for those not of the knowing.

They have a 14 day free trial, what's it going to hurt? I played the game WAAAY back at launch, don't remember any of my log in stuff from before, I wish I did... But alas, I don't.

So I loaded it up, logged in and my first thought was "Yep, dated graphics". Which is fine. But it took only my first quick group to realize how ****e 2002 era game mechanics are.

First off, you start with a default "Mouse look" on, but only horizontally. So if you want to pan the Camera UP or DOWN you cannot. With the mouse. It's the INS/DEL keys. That drove me bat **** insane. Maybe I AM spoiled by Warcrafts interface set up, but for ffs, IF I'm holding Right Click to mouse look... CAN I PLEASE LOOK UP??

I cannot enlarge the icons or most of the text. Grouping was painful in that I could not for the freaking life of my figure out where anyone was or what they were doing.

It was frankly, painful

I'm going to see if there are any interface mods out there... maybe make the game tolerable, but at this point, I'm bout ready to let the game lay dead, a memory of greener pastures.

So true.
Never played DaoC, but I started in Eve when it was first released, by accident.
Saw the disk on a store shelve and thought "why not."

Sunk a whole year into it (literally played everyday).
Going back several times, it just doesn't hold the same level of lawlessness and exploration it once did.

If I had my way, some player owned structures (player outposts and stations) and claiming space would be eliminated.
It was a blast, that can't be replicated.

I've finally "figured out eve" and am having a blast out in nullsec. Very exciting. The Sovereignty fights were involved in are quite aces.

You should of been there for the "good ole days."
Null and low sec were barely under anyone's control, it was truly a "wild west" running from pirates making long jumps to the middle of nowhere just to get those sweet rares (which were actually rare).

They can be fun until things escalate into the thousand-plus range with bubblefests and capital ship fleets, when time dilation drops everything to the speed of molasses on a polar bear's ass. I was piloting a dreadnought in one such fight and when we were ordered to go into siege mode I did the math and realized at 10% speed the cycle would last an hour and a half. It was a Revelation (laser-equipped) so I didn't even have to push "fire" after reloads. Push fire button, activate self-repair systems (which could run indefinitely while sieging) and then I went to the grocery store.

After that I never flew anything bigger than a cruiser. **** that.

Daoc is just too old. Adding in modern MMO features would require overhauling the entire game code, and they don't have anyone left to do it.

There's a free server in beta right now that rigidly adheres to the pre-TOA era. No artifacts, no master levels, none of that crap. A good idea, but the developers are too rigid with the patch they are targeting, deliberately forgoing quality-of-life improvements because they weren't around then. With one exception: they aren't allowing buffbots. (a good choice for a free server, as buffbots would effectively double the server load because literally everyone would have one)

That might be true, it's still out there now btw, just deep nullsec. It's still dangerous, took me weeks to figure out when to run. Speaking of, I just got my first stealth bomber, a Manticore, it's sexy.

Bomber squadrons, when run by a good bomber FC, are friggin amazing. Nothing like dropping connection because you received too many kill notifications at the same time. (i think they fixed this with the newer kill report system) I think my record was being on 84 kills with the same timestamp.

It's also fun to be on the other end with an instalock destroyer setup to pop bombers as they decloak.
