Anybody playing this? I just started. It's pretty brutal but addictive.

Love it! I've been playing since early release, though not much recently. Time to get back in there!

It's got tons of atmosphere, permadeath, madness, constant challenge.

It forces you to play outside you comfort zone. More than once I've lost 3 of my team and called it victory, because I got the boss.

My MVP is the grave robber. Good in any position, great critical change and dodge.

Okay, Ive played it for a couple of days now. My favorite classes are Hellion (huge damage dealers up front) and Occultist (great for support). Ive screwed up a few times but Im learning!

It's definitely a process. Love the Occultist! I should give the Hellion another shot, but the self debuffs are a turn-off. My go to front line guy is the Man-at-arms, who is solid hitter, and who has excellent camp skills that buff the whole team.

Maybe you've already hit it, but there is a balancing mechanism in the game that's a bit annoying. The missions are leveled, and once a character hits level 3 and 5, they refuse to go into lower level dungeons. This can create a situation where your best guys aren't available to go on lower level boss missions. Forces you to manage your teams carefully. Generally, you want to upgrade the stagecoach early and often, to help with this.

Similarly, once you get to the Darkest Dungeon itself, your survivors refuse to go in back for a second mission. They're still available for other dungeons, though.

Thanks for the tips. Im still hovering between levels 1 and 2 since most of my guys have got all sorts of afflictions and are stressed out lol. I need to upgrade the stagecoach again but I will need to grind for more money on the low level dungeons.

My first medium length missions ended in disaster. First time I didnt know how to camp- we succeeded in killing the necromancer but we took some casualties and the survivors are totally stressed out. The second medium range skirmish was going well until we stumbled upon an eldritch altar of some sort, I placed a torch in it and woosh- we ended up fighting another boss creature. My man at arms got killed and I had to pull out of that one lol.

I made that mistake once. Once! I've never tried again. I don't remember what came out of that thing, and I'm kinda scared to look it up!

Yeah, the stress and negative quirks are rough. In the beginning, you gotta work with what you're given, but that gets easier over time, as you can more selective with recruits, and even get guys that have already been upgraded. Once you're running 2-3 teams worth of heroes, you'll always have a group ready to go out, whatever your expenses.

Unfortunately the money problems never really goes away, as everything gets increasingly expensive. You can sell your unused relics (that wasn't always possible) and that can help quite a bit. Naturally, the long missions are the ones that pay the best, but even a nicely dialed-in team can get unlucky with the stress on a two night camp out in hell.
