Windows 10 Anniversary Update

I upgraded on the last day of the free promo. It took all day for the download and I thought I had missed the deadline before it finished. I actually cancelled the download which was stuck at 99% complete for 12 hours and thought I deleted all the files. Then suddenly 2 days later my PC starts the upgrade process all on its own and now I have W10.

Very odd.

I upgraded from 7 and 10 has actually cured a number of slow performance issues I was having. So far so good.

Side note: want to reinstall your Windows version before Windows 10? Don't like Windows 10? Here's how to uninstall it | IT PRO

There may be a problem. You have only 10 days, originally 30 days, from the anniversary update of Windows 10 to 'regress' to your older, more preferred version of Windows.

My Win 10 experience is limited, and like I said before it's fine, but so far I have yet to see anything in 10 that made me think, "OMG, how did I ever live without this?"

They just did to 8 as 7 did to vista, it is the same base os, but they unscrewed it. Usualy microsoft does that every other release. One release will be groundbreaking in features, but crash heavily have driver problems slow etc. Next release is a correction of the previous release, which they could just patch the previous one, but usually users are too scared to stay with that os.

Vista after upgrades was near the quality of 7, 7 is still better, but after the vista fiasco, they needed to fix their software while convincing people it is new.

Heck be glad microsoft has not re enacted the windows me fiasco, an os so horrible everyone flocked to an early xp that crashed constantly because it was still years ahead in stability.

I just upgraded this weekend for free. I just did it as a reinstall? It crashed at first and I had to hard boot it and restart in safe mode. Then it crashed again and I had do some repairs on reboot and still crashed but this time it seems like it fixed itself. At least I am hoping. I am still leery of rebooting. Now I just have to figure it out.

How would 7 be better than 10? Could you come with some examples, as I am seriously interested in that view. Been a Windows user for decades and in no way could I go back to Windows 7 after trying Windows 10.. so what in your view makes 7 superior to 10?

I just upgraded from 7 to 10. So if I have any questions you I can email you?

Sure no problem.

Thanks. I am playing around with it right now. It is different. I like to do tutorials and learn a little at a time. I am getting too old for changes. My 6 year old nephew is already showing me how to do things on my tablet. I guess it is getting to be time to sit in a rocker on the porch and just nod and smile. That way it is harder for them to figure out how much I forgot or don't know.

To anyone?

The text on my WIndows 10 seems to have changed on it's own. And it effects some of the older games I play.

COuld this be a Windows 10 thing? Or is it something else (I realize that is not much info to go on)?

Any reasonable help would be appreciated.

Just off the top of my head, I'd say something changed your screen resolution. It's unlikely that Win10 would do that, but yeah...you haven't given much to go on.

Thanks.

The bar where you type in the internet address (I forget the name of it) has different sized text (I use Chrome). And it seems some other text on my computer has changed.

When you say "changed".. is it just the text size or is it also a different font? Is it in Chrome only or Chrome and Windows in general?

A definite change in font as well...and Safari seems the same.

But a couple of my old games have changed their font as well..which does not seem possible to me.

Try Settings > Ease of Access > High Contrast... it should be set to none.

Only thing is, older games are often fully independent of Windows font and text size, so this makes very little sense to be honest.

But wait a minute.. you have Safari installed? err uninstall it please, it has not been updated for years and is full of security holes.. very bad ones. Same with Quicktime if you got that installed. Also go look at the installed list... sort by date, and check if something "new" has been installed that you dont recognize.

If like me, you suddenly have a whole raft of useless .jnt (Windows Journal) files because Windows Anniversary Edition has removed Journal - you can download Windows here.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3162655

Windows Ink has replaced Journal but it's a completely different animal as the files are not editable in the same way Journal files were.

Sorry, is that for Windows or Chrome?

Agreed - that's why I don't get it either.

I got a bunch of Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 files from Microsoft right when the problems started. What the heck are they?

Windows... overall across the platform. Sometimes it does manifest it self differently in games.

They are required files for many games and programs. Nothing to worry about at all, and cant cause this problem.

Okay...it is set to 'none'.

I see.

I deleted and re-downloaded Chrome..still doing it.

BTW, one of the old games is 'Panzer General'...it changed it's font size seemingly all by itself at the same time that the type of font in Chrome changed.

PANZER GENERAL!??? loved that game. And that game has its own font settings, so.. hmm go check the resolution. Also check the graphics driver. I had a client this weekend where the updated AMD drivers put the resolution into 1280 x something.. instead of 1920x1080. Had to choose the previous driver...if you have to do that..

Control panel > Device Manager > Display adapters > Choose your graphics card, right click and choose properties. Choose Driver > Update Driver > Browse My computer...> Let me pick.. and a list of installed drivers should come up. Check the dates and choose the older one.

Hey...that didn't fix it - but it did help noticeably. THANKS VERY MUCH. And for all your help.

Any idea how the settings would get changed by themselves?

It did not change the font type on Chrome...I guess I will have to change that on my own somehow. BUt I just cannot figure out what happened.

I did just download Origin (the EA games site) software and things started going weird around that time...could that have had something to do with it?

When you run Windows 10 Home, it updates the drivers to the newest version when going with the anniversary edition. Now normally that wont be a problem if the card maker did their jobs right....now in some cases an older graphics card, who´s drivers have not changed for donkey years... suddenly acts strange like this. Why, ask AMD or Nvida, it aint a Microsoft issue per say.

Well... 3 dots in chrome (top right corner) > settings > more settings > down to Web content... that is where you can change the font type in Chrome.

Maybe.. dont see how with Chrome. For Windows.. maybe, if it some how forced the driver to upgrade.. Never personally had any problems with installing Origin.

Hey, I appreciate all your help. You really seem to know your stuff on this.

BTW - there is a lower case 'i' now that is inside a circle in the line that tells you what website you are on that was not there before. Any idea how that got there?

Yep, new Google update. Basically it tells you what the website is allowed to do in the browser and you have the ability to give or take away access.. like deny it camera access or what not. Same with Chromecast now being built into Chrome instead of being an add-on.

Oh..thanks again.

Now if you will excuse me, I have a continent to conquer in Panzer General. Maybe America as well if I do a good enough job. ;)
