I have been using Gmail for almost a decade now, but my father has had his own domain and email server.
Now my father suddenly passed this December and his email account has been filling up since a week before he passed.
My father had complained for the last 3+ years of a more and more spam and I had tried to convince him to either switch to Gmail or at least funnel his emails through Googles servers. Just before he entered the hospital, he agreed to do the funnelling once he came back from the hospital. Sadly that never happened. But to show the extent of the spam his account was getting.. try thinking 80 emails a day and only one or two of them being actual mails my father wanted.
So last night, I finally got the courage to do something about it. Gmail has a function where you are allowed to send 3rd party email providers through Gmails servers. This is helpful if your private domain or host provider is on a ban list for spam.. and easy to set up. Gmail also has another function where you can set it up so your emails from your server are picked up by GMail and shown in Gmail. When you send from Gmail it however looks like you are sending from your original email server.. very handy if you are an international traveller.
So I set up Gmail to collect my fathers 1000+ emails. It takes time for Gmail to pick up the mails.. so I left it over night.
This morning the result came in.
There was 36 real emails. There was 3 that actually were Spam and were reported as so.
There was 25 "social emails", mostly facebook and Linkedin.
There was 40 or so "promotional" emails, mostly from approved sources.
So where did the rest go? In spam.. all 998 of the emails...Chances are slim that some of them are actually real emails, but I will check them.. but when I have done that, then bye bye spam mails!
I have always know Gmail spam filter was effective, but this effective .. hell no.
