And I do not know how I forgot it, but Total Annihilation should be on my list.

Yes it should as many of my friends played it but for some reason I never really got into it.. And yes BotF was a Masters of Orion clone but was buggy, but still fun.

So this list is pretty subjective I admit, it's what I consider to be classics from when I was growing up.

For the purposes of this list, it HAD to be completely PC Exclusive.

But anyway, which is your favorite and why...

Shouldn't they have also been 'classic' a lot of those games aren't very old. Civ V? that's only 5 yrs old.
Age of Empires II is 6 yrs old and was released on MAC and PlayStation .
Half Life II is at least older but was released on ever platform imaginable.

Some real classics
Baldurs Gate ( I or 2)
Xcom UFO Defense
Darklands
Civilization certainly worthy but would have to go with an older version I think to be considered classic.
Wizardry 7
Might and Magic 6-8

Plenty more some of those might be a bit old for you but they were good games in the day.

Point of fact, Age of Empires 2 was originally released in 1999.

I remember playing Age of Empires II till it was 6am... was such a great time.

What was equally as great was the Star Wars game based off the same engine.

Galactic Battlegrounds.

So cash:

Galactic battlegrounds is great. It's fun to edit scenarios and recreate iconic battles.

I voted world of Warcraft, since I dedicate all of my gaming time these days to MMORPGS. WOW kick started that.

I just find it so difficult to play MMO's anymore.

I played a bit of WoW, my main was LOTRO, which I had 3 Cap Level Characters and did top end raids with proper raiding Guilds... that was alot of fun but eventually one day I just put it down and never picked it up again.

I've recently tried to play SWTOR a couple of days ago because I enjoy the fluid storyline and dialogue but **** me, I cannot stand MMO quests anymore.

Go pickup (x) amount of (y) for Stationary Cockhead (z).

****. That. ****.

I think understanding that many gamers don't have craploads of time but want to enjoy MMO's, someone needs to come in and revamp the way MMO's play.

Blade and soul is what I'm about to start in approximately 2 hours when the head start begins. Was real fun in CBT. Good MMO you should try.

Yeah I'm really old.. My favorites were:

Command & Conquer: Red Alert and RA 2

And I played

Panzer General II about 1 million times.

I prefer strategy games to first-person shooter and MMORPG.

I like the Battle system used in the Total War series, and the only one you listed is Rome. However, they really ramped it up in Empire Total War both on land and by expanding into actual sea battle.

Now if SEGA would only upgrade the games with a Diplomacy system like the ones used by Strategy First it would be truly awesome.

Yeah... I'm having similar issues with Elder Scrolls Online, actually. It was fun for the first ten levels or so, but now it's gotten to the point where I can play for a good two or three hours straight and only make half a level's worth of progress.

I'm working 40 hours five days a week here. Simply speaking, I don't have the time to devote the 12 to 13 hour stretches of play this game seems to want for me to actually get anywhere. Frankly, even on my days off, I've got better things to do than sit in front of my lap top all day. I actually want to go out and do things in the real world.

It's hard to see the point if all you're going to do is grind without seeing any benefit to it. These are supposed to be games, not a freaking second job. lol

Of those choices its halflife 2

My favorites however are:
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Master of Orion 2
Sim City 2000
Assassin's creed series

I dont consider any games on that poll to be classics, they are far too recent.

Exactly. My list:

SSI Gold Box AD&D collection
X-Com
Masters of Magic
Heroes of Might & Magic 2
Kings Quest
Syndicate
System Shock
Ultima
Ultima Underworld
Wing Commander
Mechwarrior
Wasteland

Hahaha that's precisely the reason why I never played it again after the first run. It took even more of my time than the first Rome TW did back in the day.
Generally speaking turn-based strategy games are the worst when it comes to time consuming.

Ever played Sins of a Solar Empire though? It's a real-time strategy yet one match can go on for entire decades if the map is big enough.

Sins of a Solar Empire was great. Have you ever tried Star Drive? It got so so reviews but I quite liked it. The ship design system in the game is both daunting and worth the effort.

From the list I'd have to go with Civ V simply because it's the one game that has the most replay value. No matter what other games I'm playing I almost always have a game of Civilization in progress too.

I'd also add Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn to the list. The gameplay was excellent and the story was the most engaging I have ever played.

Baldur's Gate II is a great addition but, of all the games in that engine, Planescape: Torment is the best, and I consider to be the best game ever. That story is amazing.

The ultimate classic MMO

Off-hand from growing up:
Theme Park
Starcraft
Pharaoh
Tropico
AoE II
Oregon Trail

From playing later:
Theme Hospital

Myst might end up in the last list sometime, played as a kid only and not the best game to play as a kid haha. There a couple others I could probably add but not sure if they'd fit as classics (more just old games).

For mid 2000s, there is SimCity 4, Civ IV, Railroad Tycoon 3 and a few others I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Well, one I played quite a lot was a pure text-based MMORPG - a true RPG though - by Simutronics... "Dragonrealms"

Infinitely more interesting and complex than a static graphical MMORPG like WoW could ever be, provided you can get used to text.

Think it's actually still going.

Recall how in the first Matrix movie, they showed lines of green code and the guy is saying how he doesn't see code, he sees the images it stands for? That's how it got to be. I could glance at a screen full of text and see images in my mind's eye. I also learned to type at around 140 wpm after putting so much time in.

It had already been going a couple years when I first heard of it (1994)

One of the first PC games I really got into is one almost none of you may have played...

But it was based off the id tech 3 engine, Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force.

Was so cash:

I can no longer make it work on Windows 7 which sucks cause I still have it on disc.

There is a workaround but it's such a pain in the ass and activision doesn't do Nostalgia so there's no way they'll ever re-release it on steam or anything :(

ARMA series or swat 3. Rome total war or ages of empires 1/2
