Picked this up on Steam the other day, because I saw it was on sale for $14.00 after Thanksgiving.

I'm absolutely shocked to report that my laptop can actually run the game on "ultra" graphics settings without experiencing any significant framerate drop. :rock

Anyone else played this? Any tips or tricks you wouldn't mind passing down?

Damn it, I don't need to spend any money right now, but looking this up, I really want it.

Yeah. I played absolute **** out of Escape Velocity and Tie Fighter as a kid, so this is pretty much right up my alley. Lol

I've had my eye on it for a while, but I've been putting it off due to the price, and uncertainty regarding whether my computer would actually run it well enough to make the purchase worthwhile.

Now, I'm kind of wondering if I should maybe pick up an Occulus Rift.

How is it to control with mouse/keyboard?

Yeah... I'd definitely recommend a joystick. Thankfully, I had a logictech stick lying around. Once I started using it, things pretty much instantly got a lot easier.

Yeah, I already spent too much money this year on a racing wheel, don't need no more gaming accessories.

Own it, played it a good deal but haven't played anymore in the past few months.
It's amazing in a lot of ways, but it's missing something.

Practice your landing skills.

Also, try using voice attack with it.
Increases immersion a great deal.

Yeah... My major complaints so far are that it's...

A) Kind of hard to get into as a beginner. I can't even take most of the courier missions, because my "repuation's" not high enough. What the Hell?

B) It's kind of... Well, bland, at least with regard to the variety of ships and weapons available. They all look incredibly similar, almost to the point of being the same - Big, blunt, triangles, basically, which fire orange lasers and missiles. Star Citizen and Eve have way, way, way more variation in this regard.

They're still adding things on to the game, however, and plan to continue doing so for the foreseeable future. All these things can conceivably be fixed, I guess.

I've played Eve off and on for years.
Eve was fun, but every time I start again I get bored because it's just grinding now.

This is similar although the space physics/flying is better.
Star Citizen, well from what I hear, I wouldn't put any money into it.

Also, the universe is like a real universe, hardly a soul really visible except the odd pirate pulling you out of warp.

True. That's a problem with all of these space sims which try to be more "realistic." Space is really, really big, and really, really empty. That doesn't always translate into gaming particularly well.

Weirdly though, I'm not really bored with it in Elite: Dangerous to the point of not wanting to play, like I got almost instantly with any game in the X Series. There's something genuinely engaging about it. It's just rough around the edges.

Bought X3 Terran Conflict, played it waaaaay longer than Elite.
Thought it was more fun to boot, not that Elite is bad.
Just not ready imo.

Quite possibly. They're supposedly adding human pilots you can use to walk around with in the game, and the ability to land on and explore planets, in this next DLC.

We'll just have to wait and see how that turns out.

I think you have to buy the next DLC, which is hmmm.
I'm playing EU4 Cossacks atm, needs a lot of bug fixing, but I'm not ready to commit anymore money to Elite right now.

LOL

I just did the math on how long it would take to supposedly "beat" this game.

It boasts 400 BILLION star systems. If we assume that it took exactly one second to go through each one...

400,000,000,000 Seconds / 60 Seconds in a Minute = 6,666,666,666.7 Minutes

6,666,666,666.7 Minutes / 60 Minutes in an Hour = 111,111,111.1 Hours

111,111,111.1 Hours / 24 Hours in a Day = 4,629,629.6296 Days

4,629,629.6296 Days / 365 Days in a Year = 12,683.92 Years

...

Yeah...

It would literally take more than TWELVE THOUSAND YEARS to "beat" this game. :lamo

Been playing for a couple weeks. Haven't had any issues with kb&m control but I'm not doing much fighting so not sure if that makes a difference.

eddb.io (search it to make sure I got that right, can't check atm) is a great place to find profitable trade routes if you want to trade. Currently found a loop making 2k per ton of cargo. Went from like 300k and a hauler to 700k in a couple hours (then bought a Cobra).

Eh, procedural generation lets you make up numbers like that. Nethack, a roguelike released in 1987, has an essentially-infinite number of possible dungeon layouts!

I'm deliberately holding off on Elite: Dangerous until the Oculus Rift releases.

Yeesh. Good luck with that! From what I'm hearing, they're going to cost anywhere from $350 to $500 (or more) on release.

Frankly, however, I'm kind of wondering if I should hold off a bit myself. They're surely going to add more content over time (ships, weapons, stations, etca), and they're also going to eventually add the ability to land on planetside spaceports, and even walk around and fight like an FPS.

The present build is kind of "bare bones" by way of comparison.

Oculus has said "between $200 and $400," so $350 wouldn't shock me but from a marketing standpoint they have to be pretty careful about their price point, particularly given the already-released Samsung GearVR for $100 and the eventual direct competition from the Vive. (if HTC doesn't ****ing go bankrupt before that launches... I really wouldn't buy a Vive at any price because I don't think their software support is going to make it past 2016!)

That's cool. I would myself if I had the money to spend.

They have come out recently and said that their initial cost estimates were overly optimistic, however.

Oculus Rift consumer price will be more than $350

Last year, Oculus said the consumer version of Rift would cost somewhere between $200 and $400. Luckey’s comments suggest that the final price will land on the higher end of that spectrum, or even beyond it. He explained that the headset uses a lot of custom hardware, as the company didn’t want to compromise on quality just to hit a lower price point.

You might very well wind up spending $450 to $500 for one before all is said and done.

I hope it doesn't end up in the $500 range, that's well outside a price point for mass-adoption, particularly given the somewhat high-end PC required to run the thing. (Nvidia GTX 970 is being targeted as their baseline for minimum performance) I'd really like to see the technology take off, get all the major game studios to jump into it. Rather than being an expensive toy for the the enthusiast market. Fortunately, Valve is getting in on the ground floor here with SteamVR so I'm sure we'll see VR widespread in a few years.

But if somebody ports Freespace 2 to Oculus, they can have all of my dollars.

Well, rift preorders went up for $600 today. Disappointing, I think we're not going to see much major game development happen for such an expensive peripheral.

For $600, I'll wait and see how the technology and competition turn out. And whether this stuff really takes off.
