Upgrading from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro not working

I had the same issue going from windows 8 to 10 with the free upgrade. It downloaded and nothing ever happened. It failed for whatever reason.

Oh well, **** microsoft, Ill stick with windows 8 cuz I have it.

I was thinking of upgrading. I would like to wipe my computer first and start fresh. I guess I better look int this more before trying.

The free download is an upgrade. Therefore, an old version of Windows must exist on the system you are upgrading. This would seem to be obvious, but it didn't occur to me until after I tried to run it on a clean disk. Go through the control panel and uninstall all applications, then delete all caches, and you will get pretty much the same result as a wipe.

Oops. I didn't look at it that way. Hmmmmm. Thanks

Not a bad idea. think I will hit a Microsoft forum with some questions first. I would really like to start with a clean computer. I didn't even get a boot disk with this computer.

It is easy. You need to upgrade first... either via the little icon in your taskbar (if that works), or via this link

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Download the tool needed (32 bit or 64 bit) and then run it. It will ask you if you want to upgrade and just follow the instructions. You can also use the tool to download an ISO or USB stick installation files.

But this is the important part.. you MUST UPGRADE first, before you can do a clean install. It has to do with your free upgrade and activation. Once you have upgraded, make sure that the copy is activated... Settings > Update & Security > Activation. If it is, then you can take your ISO on a DVD or USB stick installation files, and basically wipe the system and install it fresh. It will be automatically activated once you have reinstalled.

I've tried 3 times through Win Update, and it's failed during the install portion. Now I'm going to try from a USB drive.

Errors 0xC1900101 -0x20017 when upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10

Apparently unloading certain software should fix the problem. We'll see.

Use https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 tool.. Use UPGRADE FIRST.. do not do a clean install. .. I repeat do NOT DO A CLEAN INSTALL FIRST!

Read my comment above for more information.

This is your golden opportunity to STOP what you're doing and not **** yourself over.

When I found out Windows had downloaded the entire upgrade to everybody's computer I shifted it to a trash drive and threw it out with the garbage.

I haven't been trying a clean install. Like I said, I've been trying through Windows Update. You have to have a version installed to use Windows Update. Now I'm trying it from a USB drive. I will be uninstalling some things.

Anybody know how to eliminate the Windows 8.1 Build 9600 message. It seems to relate to activating Windows with a product key.....I don't have a product key. Windows 8 was pre-installed on the laptop. I can't upgrade to Windows 10 until I get rid of this message.

Your product key will be on a sticker somewhere on the laptop. Sometimes it is on the bottom, sometimes it is under the battery. Unfortunately, the printing tends to rub off easy, making the sticker on the bottom hard to read.

No it is not activated, hence the build message.

KK but the program that I linked works as well.. basically it bypasses Windows Update and goes right to the source. But it does verify that you can get Windows 10.

No need. Just download and run.. It gives you the option of upgrade or creating an image/usb/iso whatever it says.. just choose upgrade.

I already did it.

It's a total pain in the ass. I should have just stuck with win 7. Microsoft said to uninstall my software and video driver before upgrading. Now I'm getting blue screens. Goddammit I hate this ****! Instead of an easy upgrade it totally ****ed.

What kind of video card do you have? Never heard that before. Software sure, especially anti-virus.. but video drivers?!?!?! And it is an easy upgrade for most people :)

It fails during booting, there is some boot issue that keeps it from completing upgrade. I don't remember the error message. I think I'm giving up.

Got through the Windows 10 update, now it's stuck at the login screen and won't go further. Cannot login. Eventually if you click the mouse it restarts.

Try disconnecting the computer from the network.,... pull the plug basically.

I'm talking about logging into the computer not online somewhere. I mean my personal account on the computer.

'0x8007002C - 0x4001E The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during PRE_OOBE operation'

Exact message I got. Exact same situation (upgrade from 8.1) I've tried:

Cleaning out all temporary files

Complete clean start up (no non MS services, no other start-ups)

SFC /SCANNOW and tried to repair any inconsistencies

Defragging free space AND files/folders

Scandisk

No Anti-virus

No connected peripherals EXCEPT mouse

Even had a Microsoft "Tech" come from the MS web site chat session and have a look. No resolve.

I'm over this already. MS needs to get off it's butt and fix this pronto.
Here's a message from answer.microsoft.com that match my error message.
