Does anybody here play Minecraft?

Way more than I should. It's the only game I really play consistently because it is a fairly relaxing game and I don't have to waste much brainpower on it. Not wasting brainpower is very nice at the end of a hard day of work.

The problem I've always had is getting bored with a world before I truly accomplished epic things. However, I finally built my own 1.7.10 modpack with the mods I like most so I've already gone pretty far in my current world and I plan to stick with it for a long while.

Been awhile, got turned away the moment Microsoft bought it.

I was expecting a Bitcoin thread after reading the title.

Minecraft's a good bit of fun, but you can't help feel that you've wasted your time after you've finished the odd indulgence.

I just don't have the time or patience for all those "survive, mine, and build" games.

My schedule's pretty tight these days. I need something with more immediate rewards.

Isn't that kind of the point in playing a video game, just wasting time?

For me, Minecraft is like playing with Legos on a computer, only with much more options. And then if you start throwing in mods which can do all sorts of things like adding weapons or adding magic or adding tech machines, etc., there's just such a wide array of things which can be accomplished.

It definitely is time consuming, though if you mod the game (which is really easy to do) both mining and building can be a breeze. I can set up a Buildcraft Quarry with some power and walk away while it mines every block to the bottom of the world. Then I can take all of my materials and, using an Architect's Table and a Builder, put up an entire village in 10-15 minutes.

There's no doubt Minecraft isn't for everyone, I'm just trying to say many of the shortcomings the base game has are addressed by mods which make the game infinitely more playable.

The work and time it takes to get something done is part of the reward in Minecraft. You spend months mining and collecting resources just to get your base to the point where you can move in. Then after a few more months you finally have the place really booming with machines running and doing all your work, while you continue to expand and build whatever crosses your mind on your world.

Yeah, that's what I love most about Minecraft, is that the only limit is you imagination and knowledge. The fact that everything is in blocks is not really any kind of limitation, especially when you realize that each block is a pixel.

And there's very few things that are as satisfying as when you see your creation done.

And that's the huge difference between Minecraft and MMOs.

I like both, but all MMIs are pretty linear. All you do is beat up on monsters and take their loot and see a story.

Especially if you're working with modpacks which use Forge. Then you can use Forge Microblocks, which open up the ability to do almost anything.

This morning, for example, I laid down three pieces of white wool to serve as the back of my couch. I then took two other pieces of wool, cut them in half to make a slab with my saw and laid them in front of the first three blocks of wool to create a couch. Then I sliced up another piece of wool into notches (or posts, don't remember) to put them on the side of my couch.

Now I have a great looking couch.

Throw in Carpenter's Blocks for things like slopes and angles and there truly is no limitation in what you can build.

About the only mods I like to use is Rei's Minimap and the Twilight Forest mod.

For me, the use of many kinds of mods is almost cheating.

I get that, but you don't have to use mods which make things easier. For example, Chocolate Quest, Ruins and Rougelike Dungeons adds dungeons and bases and new mobs to kill. Pam's Harvestcraft adds a LOT of new fruits and vegetables which greatly increase your ability to farm (after all, just farming wheat, potatoes and carrots can get old). Inventory Tweaks is a great mod which makes managing your inventory so much easier (for example, auto sorting of items in chest and inventories, automatically replacing a tool with the exact same tool from your inventory if you have one, etc.). Carpenter's Blocks gives you the ability to create slopes and and angles in your building.

There are a lot of mods out there which take some of the tediousness out of Minecraft, but in no way affect the difficulty of the gameplay.

I like playing it on occasion. What mods do you have?

I don't think you can play Minecraft with mods without having NEI. Great mod. And I love the Lucky Blocks mod, it just didn't really fit with my vision of my modpack. But it's a hilariously fun mod.

I've never understood the point of Flans Mod, what is it? Also, the Kitchen Mod sounds interesting, but I'm not sure it'd be worth it to add to my modpack since I already have Harvestcraft.

Flans mod has everything from cars to tanks to airplanes and grenades. Its a fun little pack I DL'd for the kids.

Now the Kitchen Mod is the one that I love. It has pretty much everything you want/need to make an actual kitchen in your house. It has a dishwasher that works only it doesn't clean dishes, it "cleans" your armor and weapons/tools. Essentially restoring full durability to them. Also has a fridge that works though I haven't actually messed with it all that much. It also has a shower that works and a wash basin that you can put water in.

That sounds awesome. I love the building part more than anything else and having things like that in a house would be pretty cool.

I might have to check that one out eventually.

I play it from time to time. The inner kid in me wants to play legos, and the adult in me does not want a mess of legos everywhere, so minecraft meh!
