Okay, everyone...build your computers...buy that used machine you've been thinking about...dump Linux...and get back into Windows. Don't bother buying it, though. Just pirate the OS. When Win10 is released you'll be able to upgrade to a legit copy of Win10...for free.

Now THAT is a deal nobody can pass up.

Microsoft Will Upgrade Non-Genuine Windows PCs to Windows 10 for Free

Software piracy has been the bane of Microsoft's existence ever since the first copy of Windows was pirated. Since then, it's been a cat and mouse game between Microsoft and software pirates, but when it comes to Windows 10, it looks like Microsoft is willing to call a truce. More specifically, reports have emerged that Windows 10 will be offered as a free upgrade to all Windows users, even those running non-genuine copies.

I think MS is just desperate because there's so many Windows versions out there and people are refusing to upgrade to the newer ones.

I wouldn't call it desperation, but I do think they are trying to do everything they can to get people to Win10. I don't know their actual motivation, but I can think of a few reasons to get more people onto Win10:

1. The more people using Win10, the sooner they can cut Win7 loose. It's obsolete compared to Win10 and they don't want to keep committing resources to it.

2. The more people using Win10, the more people exposed to the Windows Store, the more potential sales, the more money...not to mention the possibility of better apps being developed.

3. The more people using Win10, the more potential for people to start using other Win10 devices...desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, etc. Again, more money for them.

Another interesting development is that MS is reportedly working on a way to replace the Android OS on your phone to Win10. If people are using Win10 on their desktops and laptops, they may make the move to Win10 on their phone.

I personally feel Win7 isnt obsolete- Ive used XP on my desktop until a few months ago and the only reason I upgraded is for some games but most people use their PCs for productivity rather than games so as long as an old OS can run the programs they want then there's no reason to upgrade. It doesnt matter if MS stopped supporting the OS, there's still tons of users with XP even though MS stopped their support of it a long time ago.

MS loves to come out with new Windows so that they can make money by forcing people to upgrade but their business model hasnt been working ever since they rolled out Vista- now it feels to me that they are indeed getting desperate and this is a pretty desperate move by them- assuming its true of course. ;)

And there's no way in hell I would want to put Win10 to replace my android phone. Not a chance.

I don't think Win7 is obsolete, either. I was speaking as if from MS's point of view. When considering what they want to do going forward, these are things that can't really be incorporated into Win7. That means the resources they commit to supporting Win7 are wasted.

I don't think I've ever seen MS "force" anyone to upgrade. Myself, I've always had a choice which OS I've wanted to use.

I'd replace Android on my phone with Win10...if only for the convenience of having everything synced across all my devices. I have Win8.1 on my desktop and on my tablet. It would be good to get my phone on board. In any case, I'm not wedded to Android. It works well, but I don't think it's better than Windows.

I just remembered that a few years ago I had a client that wanted to open up a call center for an online support team dedicated to Linux and other open source apps- one of the things that he told me was that MS would eventually make Windows open source; it seems that he was partly right, Windows will be offered for free like a Linux distro but it will continue to be closed source in terms of its core programming which means any service or upgrades will be done through MS. Hmmm, very bold and clever move by MS- it means they are trying to take market share not just for desktop OS away from open source Linux but for mobile phones as well- by making future versions of Windows free and cross platform compatible.

This was back in 2008- seems he was kinda right after all.

Yes...I think that's exactly what MS is trying to do.

And they are also trying to hedge their bets by offering their "service" apps to Apple and Android users. They are, in effect, hitting their competition from different angles.

You could do that with Windows 8 :)

Okay. I didn't know that.

Anyway, MS has clarified their policy. There was some question if this was limited to China...it's not. It's world-wide. However, if you have an unqualified installation of Windows, you can upgrade to Win10, but you will still have to pay to activate it. Also, that free upgrade to Win10 excludes Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1.

Looks like it sounds too good to be true. And it is.

Apparently its a free upgrade to Win10 but if it was originally a pirated copy then MS will still consider it to be non-genuine.

In that case I really dont see any reason for pirates to take advantage of this supposed free upgrade.

Unless one truly trusts their pirated copy to be free of nasty junk, it might be a good thing to get your pirated copy from MS, themselves. Unless you think MS might give you some nasty junk, too.

Now I think the reason why MS wants to do this is to keep tabs like the NSA on pirate users of their OS. I will trust pirated software before I trust MS.

A chance for millions of undocumented PCs to come out of the shadows and join the rest of the world. Hallelujah!
Please be aware that this is NOT "amnesty" for illegal operating systems. Nay, it is simply a chance for computers to no longer live in fear.
Their processors and BIOS can work in binary security, knowing that they will not be bricked by Micro$oft.
... Now if we can only solve the problem for the undocumented wetware! :D

isnt new for microsoft, they did similiar with win 7,where after a month if the os isnt registered with its key,you get a black background and lose access to microsoft services, but the os remains fully functional.

windows 8.1 came as nearly free to oems, allowing them to compete against adroid which had no licensing costs.macosx is cheap for every version, but they issue them in small increments, over time adding up to the same cost as one major windows release.

i think they are going the way android did, they are going cheaper and probably in the future fully free, then they will make their money back on software sales like microsofts office software.

It certainly looks that way...especially after hearing about a hint that MS is looking into making Windows open-source to some extent.

According to Microsoft Technical Fellow Mark Russinovich, a future that includes an open-source Windows could happen. “It’s definitely possible,” Russinovich reportedly told an audience at the ChefCon conference in Santa Clara this week. “It’s a new Microsoft.”

“Every conversation you can imagine about what should we do with our software—open versus not-open versus services—has happened,” Russinovich added.

Right now, Microsoft has built its business on Windows, Office, and its enterprise products. But as Microsoft moves more toward a “devices and services” world, it’s possible that Windows will become less important, even as those services become more prominent.

“Microsoft’s revenue increasingly comes from the compute services rather than licensing software, and by selling a wide collection of related services such as Office 365, OneDrive, Bing, etc.,” said Al Gillen, a vice president with IDC. “So would it make sense to open-source Windows in, maybe, 10 years? Quite possibly.”
