Epic is developing the new Unreal Tournament jointly with the Unreal Engine 4 community for FREE. It will not be free as in a crippled game that requires microtransactions, it will be free free.

The game is in pre-alpha which means its in its infancy as far as development goes; its not even remotely close to beta. However it is a lot of fun to play already! I used to love the arena shooters like doom, quake 3, ut 2004, etc., but the communities have mostly died out or are very small. Now everyone plays the "realistic" shooters like counterstrike, cod, etc. I'm really not into those.

You can download the game for free if you register with the forums and go to the members only download post.

All you do is download the zip file, extract it and click the RunUT.bat file. You can also start your own multiplayer server and start a client to play on it with others.

Right now the server browser is having problems and not showing all the games, also there are a lot of times in which absolutely nobody is playing. However there are times in which there are a few dozen people in various servers and its a lot of fun! The player base is mostly hardcore and competitive so you are likely to get your face ripped off, possibly by me, I was pretty good back in the day and dominating most games right now.

Here's a somewhat dated gameplay video to show about where its at.

I forever gave up on this series, the peak was Unreal Tournament 2003. The maps, available mods, and so forth made that version the best of the group. All others have lacked in some way.

Man did we kill hours in our down time in the desert with Unreal Tournament...

My eyes hurt just thinking of it. Good times.

The community was kind of split, most liked UT99 and UT2K4, others preferred 2003 and UT3. UT4 is sort of a blend between UT99 and UT2K4, you may not like it. It could be really big though as the community input is shaping the game from start to finish, it may have more of what you want in the end.

Yeah its great, constant fighting for a couple hours leaves you a bit drained after, haha.

I like to play it on and off to rest my brain from software development, other games just don't do it.

I've had that problem sometimes, its from not blinking because you're concentrating so hard... you gotta train yourself to blink, hehe.

I played pretty much all of them and my opinion is that UT2k4 was the best of all time. I was very disappointed by UT3 and I dunno, I just don't have a whole lot of faith they won't **** this one up. Also, for the past 15 years they've been recycling almost the exact same gameplay. They need to mix it up a bit.

That's a pretty common sentiment and I agree. UT4 plays a lot like UT2K4, I hated UT3 as well. They're also looking to do some more interesting things with team play. There is quite a bit of support for more than just the standard same old same old. Hopefully they will come up with some really cool additions.

Yeah I've probably put more hours into UT99 than any other game. ****ing masterpiece, that one.

I remember playing the demo and thinking "This is it. Graphics just can't get any better than this."
