Saw this one was free to play now, so I figured I'd check it out.

I really liked KOTOR 1 and 2, and was frankly kind of pissed when they ultimately decided to make an MMO instead of a third installment in the series.

Has anyone here played it? Is it worthwhile?

I didn't necessarily hear good things about it, as I recall.

I played it from early access through August of last year.

The story-based leveling process is fantastic -- while it's advisable to do all the side missions you can, the class questlines are excellent. All fully voiced and well-written. The combat system is pretty simple; it's basically WoW with lightsabers. Most of the cosmetic items are picked up through the cartel system (basically microtransactions); however, if you subscribe you get free ones each month and can get some really neat stuff. But you really don't need them to play the game.

However, once you've reached max level, about the only thing to do is PvP (which is done in instances that can get quite repetitive), or run high-end raids for gear (which gets VERY repetitive), or roll another character. I did all eight stories (a couple multiple times), and after a while there was just nothing new for me to do anymore. There's been a bunch of new content added in the last year, including a new space system, housing options, and probably some more stuff, but I really don't have the time or inclination to get back into it.

I really enjoyed it.

But it coincided with an absolute end for my love for MMO's.

If you're not sick of MMO's, I'd say give it a go, loved my sith inquisitor storyline, had a great time, but ultimately sick of pick up quests.

If one more stationary ********er asks me to do one more thing for them I'm going to lose my mind, nothing against SWTOR, just MMO's in general.

I'd say give it a go, I did, didn't regret it and signed up for 60 day full membership to get a feel for how good it was... again not disappointed.

SWTOR, like all MMOs, is much more fun if you know people. I started from day one with a group of friends from Star Wars Galaxies, so we had an instant support/crafting/grouping base from the get-go. Most of them quit after a while, and while I did get in with a pretty good guild after that, it wasn't quite the same.

I think that's one of the reasons I'm enjoying Planetside 2 so much, it's technically an MMO but:

A) You can pickup a full platoon group anytime before 1am.

B) No matter what gear you have, you can be effective if you're skilled and work with your platoon.

You can get into pick-up groups in SWTOR for any of the flashpoints/raids/etc. (the group finder works very well), but all it takes is one moron and you're screwed. I LOATHE pick-up groups.

First group I had for Black talon were amazing, joined their guild straight away.

But never found a good PUG after that.

But servers are sparse now man, after the first initial planets getting the heroics done turned into a huge bastard.

I skipped a bunch of the heroics, the rewards aren't usually worth it.

Plus if you have full member you don't even need to do them, I found myself being 2-3 levels higher at all times because of all the XP boosts you get.

Also true.

I used to do all of the other sidequests and get as many commendations as I could -- the gear you could get from the comm vendors was just as good (or better) as anything you'd get from the heroics. Then I'd just craft anything I needed to fill in the blanks. I had enough characters that I had all my crafting bases covered.

I didn't get far enough to understand the crafting.

I picked something random and I was like... "Oh my companion is picking up plants now.... alrighty then".

Its been free to play for years now, dude.

I played it for awhile last year but I got bored with it- too repetitive.

As for KOTOR, part II (Sith Lords) is my favorite. The problem was Obsidian released the game while it was incomplete (Lucasarts forced them to release it too soon so they were forced to trim a lot of material) so the ending was confusing. However, just a few years ago a group of dedicated modders were able to create a restored version of the game because Obsidian released all the unused source material in the game and so they at last completed the game a few years ago- the result is a masterpiece, imo- if you play the restored version its like a dark, existential sequel to KOTOR I. If you havent played the restored version I highly suggest you try it- its a whole different game!

I loved Planetside 2 and played the heck out of it for a year but the last patch pretty much made it unplayable on Win XP since it crashed every 10 minutes so I stopped. :(

Dude... just gets windows 7...

The last rig I got and upgraded I made damned sure it came pre-loaded with windows 7, fantastic OS.

Yea. I actually saw that mod and was thinking about getting it.

Hell! It might be high time to just go ahead and replay the whole series. It's been a couple years, come to think of it.

Ah I gotcha now.

I'm sad alot of my old games won't work with Win7 but at the same time, new gaming is just so good.

Got Civ: Beyond Earth preloaded... wouldn't change that for anything.

Go for it, Gat, I promise you'll love it. ;)

Here's a tip: when you encounter those 3 assassin droids (you will encounter them multiple times with the mod)- make sure HK-47 is with you, it will open up a whole new storyline where he makes it to the assassin droid factory.

Also, install the M4-78 mod too, thats the droid planet!

I have all of that plus I installed the Jedi temple mod and the black lightsaber mod. KOTOR II is still installed on my PC. Its that good. LOL

Eh, I think SWTOR is better played just pretending it's not an MMO at all. Just pretend it's KOTOR 3, single-player, and go through the storyline.

As an MMO, there are others that do the same thing better. But I'm not really into the "standard model" MMOs like this one. Eve Online was the only one that held my attention for a significant period.

So far, it seems pretty alright. It feels enough like KOTOR that I can get into it.

Not really liking the lack of customization though. All the faces are "meh," and the only three body types available seem to be "scrawny hipster," "Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones," and "Sumo Wrestler" with no happy middle ground to be found.

I really like it but the criticism is that it is essentially a WoW clone. But I play it because I love the story and I'm a star wars nut.

Yea. The story definitely seems to be the upside from what I'm hearing.

Does each different class and species get its own story line, or just each different class?

Each class gets its own storyline. Theoretically you can be any race/species and any class, although there are restrictions at the beginning. There are 8 total classes and 16 subclasses (2 per class)

Species makes no difference, other than a few occasional dialogue inserts.
