so good it skipped 9,actually i have no idea why they want to skip 9,but its bringing in features that people have demanded, most notably a startup menu and desktop by default.

Windows 10: 12 things you need to know | PCWorld

currently microsoft insiders can use the early beta demo for testing, but its supposed to be a far from finished product.

im just happy that when win 10 comes out,win 8 can be forgotten, after all microsoft only seems to e successfull on every other os.

Rumor has it that a lot of developers had something like this in their code:

if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9"))

{ /* 95 and 98 */ } else {

Windows 8.1 suffers from the stigma of 8.

Yes, Windows 8 sucked.

Windows 8.1 does not. If you have a Window XP machine, it's perfectly fine to upgrade, but Windows 7 is largely the same so it's not worth it unless MS offers Windows 10 free to those who purchased Windows 8.

I use a laptop and I'm trying to time my next computer purchase to coincide with a windows OS that's decent. It seemed like windows 7 was alright... but MS has such a bad habit of trying to fix something that isn't broken.

What is their best OS since XP, in your humble opinion? Inquiring minds want to know. Was it Windows 7?

Depends what device you're on. Windows 8.1 is quite good for touch screens but also for users who want the desktop when they need it. And W8.1 has improvements over 7 regarding stability, speed and security. Vista after a long, long, long series of patches was better than XP, but lacked some of the hard drive support functions like TRIM that W7 has. I have NEVER degragged any of my drives on Windows 7 manually. They're all at 0% fragmented because W7 takes care of it. And most people don't ever bother with secondary TRIM programs for their SSDs because Win7 takes care of that so well.

The issue with 7 is that we've already lost non-security support. We have I think until 2020 until it goes the way of XP, which is pretty long from now.

I don't have issues with 8.1 after you install a free third party start menu. With boot to desktop, it's Windows 7 with improvements. If you're buying a new device, either get 8.1 or wait for 10. 7 is all fine a good, but current 8.1 is W7 with improvements.

I've been using Win8 since release along with all of its updates. Frankly, I've had no problems with it from day one. In my opinion, MS has consistently improved the OS all along. I think I might have avoided some of the complaints about Win8 because I've never had the habit of using the Start Menu much and because I recognized early on that the "Metro" screen was really nothing more than an enhanced Start Menu. It just wasn't a big deal to me.

I have the Win10 WTP installed on an old laptop and I've been putting it through some of its paces. For those who just can't wrap their heads around the "Metro" screen of Win8/8.1, the Start Button is an improvement. I kind of like it because I don't have to leave the desktop to check on the few apps that I use. I also like that I can open the Windows apps in a window right on the desktop. I've played with the alternate desktop feature just a little. I just don't do much with that laptop, but when I put Win10 on my desktop...my main computer...I can see myself using that feature more.

I expect that users of Win8.1 will be able to get Win10 at a greatly reduced price...or maybe even for free. If that's the case, then I recommend that anyone considering buying or building a new computer in the next year should go with Win8.1. For those who are happy with Win7 on your current computer...you should stay with it and wait till Win10 is released before you make a decision to change your OS. Win8.1...at full price...just isn't worth it in my opinion.

But...if you are concerned about the security, stability and speed of your OS, then consider moving on from Win7 now. Win8/8.1/10 is a GREAT improvement.

btw, I've never been all that concerned about the "name" of an OS. Win8...Win9...Win10...I just don't care.

vista too was suffering from too much hate which is why win 7 was so succesfull, even though they shared the same base.win seven won people by being a refined vista that worked out of the box with a new name and a few new features.

win 8 though is hated because of metro,in terms of stability, and speed, its faster and more secure than 7.i still havent upgraded to 8.1 on my gaming desktop, because nearly everything 8 is disabled,so i get 8's stabily withs 7's user interface.

and ofcourse the granddaddy of all windows releases,xp,never was too rosy at the start,it was about as reliable as windows 98 first edition, and had massive security holes.the xp people remember today is sp2 and sp3,which fixed almost all its problems.i had xp on initial release,so many blue screens of death, but i loved it because me and most people came from win98 first edition or win me,which both were 100 times worse.

Vista was a slow resource hog that took a lot of patches to get viable. It's true that Windows 7 is essentially a rebuilt Vista. Windows 10 will essentially just be a rebuilt Windows 8.1

I don't disagree. Win 8.1 is in many ways better than 7 once you install a start menu. But the damage was done.

Well, MS had their Win10 consumer briefing a couple of days ago. I watched part of it live online. Here's an article that gives a good rundown on the upcoming OS.

Everything We Know About Windows 10 | Maximum PC

I've been playing with the Technical Preview for a couple of months and I have to say that I like the OS. The one feature I'm most excited about...that's not available in the TP yet...is Cortana. I talk to my Android tablet a lot and I can't wait to be able to talk to my desktop.

Previously in this thread, I gave my advice about upgrading to Win10. Toss that advice in the dumpster. If you are using Win7, Win8 or Win8.1, upgrade to Win10 as soon as it's released. It's free, so you have no excuse. If you are still sporting XP or Vista...damn...at least get your ass out of the past. :2razz:

I just dont get the whole fascination about the start button/menu as 90+% dont even use it, and the further you go back in Windows.. like Windows XP.. the more useless the button is.

However the propaganda campaign against Windows 10 has already started and it is getting beyond ridiculous. It already started a month before Wednesdays announcement with a rumour going around that Windows 10 would be subscription based. Then when it was announced that the "first year was free", the rumour went nuts on many comment sections and even on some legit tech news sites.. seems people managed to not read that it was free for the lifetime of the device... And some sites including CNET are still pushing the bull**** by posting headlines like "Windows 10 free - for some".. they have since removed the article oddly enough.

There is already complaints that "the start menu is too big" to "the start menu has metro crap" and more utter bull****. For the record, you can set up your start menu to act like in Windows XP/Vista/7..

Any ways, so far I am impressed of what they have done. I have not used it yet with Cortana but am awaiting that build with glee. The whole idea of a cross device OS where all the fundamental parts are the same is brilliant and the fact that the OS adapts to what kind of device it is.. is ground breaking innovative.

I hear you, Pete.

Now, I'm one of those who almost never used a start button...I always used desktop or taskbar shortcuts...but in Win10, I DO use the start button more. Because of the app tiles. But yeah...if you want, you can remove all those tiles and you end up with a more efficient Start Menu than you ever had with Win7.

This "subscription" thing reminds me of what happens on this forum all the time. I'll say something and some yahoo will respond with what they "think" I said...even though it bears no resemblance to anything I actually said. It's like they have a filter in their heads that automatically translates what they hear or read into whatever their bias WANTS them to hear or read. And they actually PREFER their misconception.

The cross-platform thing is very impressive. I am actually considering getting a Win phone now...especially since Virgin Mobile has added one to their line-up. The only thing holding me back from getting one right now is that the one phone they have is slightly inferior to the one I have right now...and it costs a bit more than the $70 I paid for my Android phone. If Virgin Mobile gets a better Win phone or reduces the price of the one they have now, I'll switch in a heartbeat. In any case, I have till later this year to see what happens.

Afterthought: The cross-platform thing with XBox Games is pretty cool, too...even if I won't get any use from it. I'm just not a console-type of guy. For those who do like consoles, being able to switch and play your game on any device you choose is awesome.

I hated giving up XP, and I'm afraid I will have to give up Win7 soon (I lost it years ago at work, of course). I use probably only 10% of a computer's capabilities, but as someone who word-processes a lot, I HATE Word 2010-2013, and they have caused me to despise Microsoft as "the evil empire." How dare Microsoft usurp "the rules" and deliberately add an extra space between paragraphs? Sure, you can change the default so it doesn't--but Word is determined, so you have to do it all the freaking time. Arrrrgh.

I had a Nokia 610 and loved it. Sadly the on/off button broke so I had to replace the phone. I got a Nexus 5 instead and loved that too, but dropped a few weeks ago cracking the screen. Now I have a Samsung S5 and it is great too once you get rid of the bloatware.

However had it not been for the fact that I already had a wireless charging kit for an S5 (bought it by mistake), and the fact that the Windows Phone I would buy, was more expensive than the S5.. then I would have gone for a 1520 or 930 Nokia. But the price difference was simply too high.. 459 for the S5 and 639 for the 1520, plus I had to wait a few days to get the phone.. really frustrating. Windows Phone 8 is the superior phone experience of the 3 main OS out there, having used all 3. iOS is too confusing and the lack of a back button is frustrating. Android is great but you need to really set up the phone to get what you want.. Windows Phone 8 is just.. easy as hell to use once you get the basics down.

On top of that, even the cheap Windows Phones run smooth and are rich in features.. something cheap Android phones can not say... and there is nothing cheap on the iOS front.

With Windows 10 it will only get better. The only thing that would make Windows Phone perfect would be better integration of Google services.. especially Google Maps. If Microsoft and Google really had balls and wanted to take out Apple, then they could... just look at the most popular apps in the Apple App Store.. all from Google or Microsoft..

ohh new build out with cortana.. download inc!

Thanks for the heads up. I had my Win10 laptop turned off.

Downloading now.

Just installed it on my laptop. So far it is rock solid and I am liking it.

But I can see already there will be one complaint.. the old control panel is still there, so you still have 2 settings areas. Of course I suspect that the old control panel will be removed in the final build and it seems most settings are now accessible in the new settings menu. All they really add are the administrator features in the old control panel.. the administrative tools.

I really like the new windowed modes of windows 8-10 apps.. makes it seem that there is no difference between new apps and old programs.

Still getting to know Cortana.. cant comment on that.

The new icons in File Explorer are different and yet very pleasing. Must be the bright colours and flat interface. It is much easier to find the folders you want.

But at least all the bitching and false outrage about the start menu will go way for the most part. I bet there will be a few old timers that will complain that the "all programs" is now called "all apps" and instead of going out to the right, it expands up... horror! And then they will also complain about the metro like icons the right of the start menu and complain over it is too hard to remove them and why should some be there as default bla bla.

I still have XP on my computer, use it once in a while. I have 8.1 as the main O/S, but I keep XP since some of my software, like disc burning, only works on XP. Plus, it's fun to use XP every once in a while just for fun. I need to get my second computer going again (mobo problems), that has Vista and 7 on it. But I like it because it is not used much and is very empty. Just need time, which is scarce. Plus, I want to give Win 10 a try.

But, yeah, XP was a big leap forward.

You do know you have been able to burn disc natively in Windows since Vista right? And that there are plenty of freeware and pay programs that are a tad more advanced but do the job as well?

Liking Windows 10 so far, just needs stable graphics drivers from ATI and NVidia before I go in full hog as a main OS on my PC. Laptop runs great with it on, although I cant atm get Cortana to work, but that might be because I am not in the US.

Yep. Hated trying to burn discs in Windows. I haven't tried it in 8, but it was slow and clunky before. But now, I rarely burn discs anymore, but I do have a few old games that I doubt would run on Win 8.

10 looks really good, I just need to get my other computer running to give it a try.
