Dangerous prank brings SWAT team down on gamer

A Littleton, Colorado, man named Jordan Mathewson was raided by a heavily armed SWAT team thanks to a false shooting and hostage report, and all the chaos was captured on a Twitch game stream (see below). During a Counter-Strike session, Jordan "Kootra" Mathewson -- a founder of The Creatures -- suddenly noticed things around him were amiss. "Uh oh. This isn't good. They're clearing rooms. What in the world, I think we're getting swatted," he says in the video. Luckily, Mathewson stayed calm throughout the ordeal and was released a short time later.

So on one side we have cops who are armed more heavily than they have been in the past and necessarily so since they are the first line in the WOT. Then, on the other side, we have some freaking asshole who calls the cops on his buddy just for ****s and grins?

Really!?

In this case the kid didn't panic but even after what must have been an eternal 3 min for him the cops are still trying to figure out what happened and if he was somehow involved.

There is no humor in stuff like this. It takes police resources off the street where someone might need them and puts people in unnecessary danger. I have no idea how much it happens but if they even have a name for it I'm guessing it's not an isolated incident.

-edit-

Holy ****!!

I'm reading the comments on YouTube and they're trashing the cops!! WTF is wrong with these people!!??

So a troll reported a hostage and shooting situation.

Ok.

This is one of the very few instances where the existence of SWAT doesn't make me wanna put my head through a wall.

And that dickhead wouldn't be my friend after this even online. This is beyond not funny. And the cops are understandably irritated as well around 1:35. Probably preparing themselves to see a bunch of wounded, and they arrive to a kid in a chair. That is not ****ing funny.

Guy's got a good head on his shoulders and thank god for that, or this could have gone really, really wrong. His friend should be charged for this, honestly. As harshly as humanly possible.

ETA: Just read the rest of the article. This is a thing? What in the hell is wrong with people? Reporting bombs and shootings over a ****ing game...

I am not going to be too hard on the cops, but to be honest they were stupid in this case.

What were they stupid about?

It was reported as a hostage situation. That perp was armed and would shoot police if they entered the premises. This call was made supposedly by the perp. This type of situation requires intelligence of which the police did not gather very much of. Further there were no hostages to be found in the room which they entered, or armed men. Further their training and coordination is lacking from the looks and sound of things. I could go on. Bottom line the police in this town need more and better training. Potential and actual situations like this need to be reacted to thoughtfully. That was not the case here.

Here's another thing. If they are this predictable in their reaction to a call then you can rest assured it will be used against them in the future. And that is bad news for all.

I've been a cop in a very similar situation. Those cops did pretty much the same thing I did at the time. When you get the call you're just responding to the information you have and sort it out as best you can along the way.

As far as your other post goes....that's got the potential to be a REALLY big problem.

I think in those type situations circumspection and intelligence gathering would be better suited. Discretion is the better part of valor and all. PROPER training and lots of it help keep the stupid to a minimum. The police need to learn how to be peace officers again, the us verses them mentality is going to backfire on them and we are seeing the beginnings of that happening.

So where's the danger in gaming?

You must have read the entire report, to make such judgments about what the cops did and did not do. Please link to the official police incident reports which you've already read prior to making this post which lead you to your conclusions.

You know for a fact that the cops didn't have a helicopter fly over first? You know for a fact that plain-clothes cops didn't drive by with an unmarked car first? You know for a fact that there was absolutly no intel gathered about the target at all? How do you know these things? Where is your proof that no intell was gathered? Links.

I will make judgments however I please.

You know how this works: make a claim, provide proof. Otherwise nothing you say is credable. That's debate.

You dont seem to know what you're talking about. The only reason I can guess why you're posting unsubstantiated opinions knowing you'll be called out and knowing that you will shrink away, is self hatred. I can't help you improve your self immage.

...and then PirateMk1 stomped his foot and slammed the door.

Just stated a fact. If you wish to read more into it, thats not my problem.

I stated my opinion, apparently you take issue with it. And...... I don't care.

I am free to post what I like when I like. I may or may not engage if I so desire. If that doesn't meet with your approval, too bad so sad. Same goes with providing proof, as I please, when I please. If that doesn't meet with your approval too bad. Cheers.

...PirateMk1 screamed from behind his door.

Oh, is that a lame attempt at humor? I will laugh for you then. Feel better about your self esteem now?

...the high pitch of his screaming bearly understandable, his voice growing horse, PirateMk1coughed....

The person who made the false report should be arrested and tried. Real people could have been killed.

With that said, there's too many SWAT teams in the US, heck even the Department of Education has a SWAT team!

Oh let me guess more lame humor. Should I laugh again? Cheers. :drink

Little did PirateMk1 know that the adults had stepped out for icecream, yet still she continued....

So is there a danger regarding online gaming or was this just a prank and gaming has nothing to with it? If this guy was on the pot when the raid occured would the thread title be "the danger of taking a dump"?

I was drinking, I thought you wrote something interesting for a moment, then realized I was impaired. By the way who's she?
