Mods for me are an essential part of any game. I actualy often refuse to buy games which are not or hardly moddable. For the developer mods are a win win situation because it creates the impression that the developer actualy cares for the fanbase and the sales go up as some people actualy do buy games because of mods.

To me one of the greatest mods out there is actualy a series called "Darthmod", a mod made for almoust each and every Total War game by a Greek guy whos account name on each gaming forum he is registered on is "Darth Vader".

Darth or Dartis is know in the TW fan comunity to be possibly the greatest of all modders for the series. When Empire was released it was and to some extent still is one of the most buggy games there is with several parts of it hardly working at all. But along came Dart and boom:

He repaird the game and made it incredible damn awsome. Everything was improved including the campain map and he even added an epic new intro video:

Same for Napoleon which through him bacame one of my favorite games of all time. And Dartmod for Shogun 2 is simply a grand and epic masterpiece.

Unfortunatly Darth Vader no longer makes mods for the series after his job aplication was rejected by the developer. Last thing I heard was that he is making his own strategy game set during the American civil war.

I also have to mention SkyUI a mod that replaced the hideous items menu that vanila skyrim had with a new and better version and perfecting it:

And Fallout 3 Hardcore Mode Mod. A mod which adds a new hardcore mode into the game which requires the player to sleep regulary, drink, eat and other to not die. An extremly challenging mod which was so popular amongst gamers that the developer Bethesdea (which is the most awsome developer concerning modding) added the hardcore mod into their next game Fallout New Vegas:

But my alltime favorite is Third Age.

In my opinion this mod, despite being so old has yet to be beaten in it`s awsomeness. It mods the game Medieval 2, a strategy game set during medieval Europe, to be set in the world of the Lord of the Rings novels. And it does so expertly with incredible love for detail. Adding new maps, campains, factions, models, textures, missions and other this is one of the greaters overhoul mods ever made:

Usually I like small mods that just make gameplay a little better. A couple examples from Elder Scrolls:

1: a mod for Skyrim that adds all the roads to the map. Simple, in no way unbalanced, and yet it really is nice.

2: a mod for Oblivion which made harvested plants show as being harvested. This only made sense and was so nice.

The best mod of all time was Modern Warfare for Battlefield 1942. Not only did it make a great game into an ever better game, it defined the direction that the whole Battlefield series subsequently took.
