PC Upgrading/Replacing

I have Windows 8. When the computer boots up, one of the 'squares' on the desktop changes it to a regular Windows 7 screen. It works just fine that way.
Start8 will give you back your start menu. $5.00, and well worth it.

The square is a tile BTW, and the interface is not the desktop, it's called Metro. The desktop you change to is an application of Metro.

Stop it!! :rofl

well your father is right, win 7 also did some hiding/burying of things advanced users use but its even worse with Win 8

IMO XP was the best windows ever

Depends. XP has bad support for larger hard drives, SSDs and some newer hardware as well as inferior networking compared to 7.

I prefer 7 over XP for the most part.

If all you're doing is surfing the web, e-mails and a little word processing I don't think you can buy a new machine that can't do all that well.
Most people have a lot more computer than they will ever use.
If it ain't broke...

People like that should just buy a tablet and get a Blue Tooth keyboard. You can get a Nexus 10 refurb for $399 that will do handle surfing the web, e-mails and a little word processing easily. Plus, you can use it on the toliet. Unlike most computer.

Yes, but from the people I know who have used Win 8, it's the desktop they dislike about it. Great for a tablet, just not a computer.

That's because Ballmer's an idiot in thinking a touch interface goes well with things that don't use touch. Even touch laptops are a bad idea. It's one thing to have finger prints on a tablet you can clean easily. Can you imagine constantly having to clean your laptop screen? And non-touch desktops using Metro? Who the hell authorized that? It's no wonder why 8 is failing.

see thats why i never ran into any problems, i never have to big of a local hard driv and im not interested in them
windows seven as exactly given me and my work more problems networking wise, theres already patches out for it not seeing the network paths right away if ever etc

now this by no means is a HUGE problem just annoying but its just something i never encountered with windows XP as long as all the pcs were 98 and up.

the only real think i like about 7 over XP is its look actually, it looks update and new and fresh

i have personalize all my back grounds, desktop, log in and lock screen.
I personalized the little login window
I also added quick launch to make it feel like XP more

so dont get me wrong i am very happy just wish the user friendly moves went in more then one direction. which is casual user direction.

I work for a pretty large employer. They still use XP. When they upgrade, I will consider the bugs are worked out enough for me to upgrade.

Or keep using their 32bit WinXP machine.

Having the internet follow you to the ****ter is a selling point?
****ter twitter?

As of a couple of years ago, there was at least one multi-national who was still running Win95 machines on the factory floor, and Win2k machine ins their offices.
There may be other factors which go into upgrading OSes than just "bugs".

I misunderstood. From the thread title, it sounded like you wanted advice on how to replace your child with a politically correct one.

I'm currently running a 3770k (@4.7 with an H80i cooler) with 16 gigs of ram (@2133) with a gtx670. Built it back in November and plan to keep it as is for a few years. From reading tomshardware the latest Haswell lineup is only 5-8% improvement which is completely negated if you're already OCing. Right now I think the best improvement gamers can make in the coming months is going for a 2560x1440 monitor. The prices keep dropping.
...
My work laptop runs Win8 w/ a touch screen. Never had an issue with fingerprints >.>

most companies will not upgrade from xp reguardless of how bug free the successors are.it mostly has to do with software and licensing.

licensing for bulk windows for business even though alot cheaper than individual copies isstill very expensive, and not to mention alot of xp software doesnt crossover to vista or higher.

this is because xp even though nt based has alot of windows 98-me support for software, and can even run a few pure dos programs as well.alot of software developers exploited that in the early days to write their programs and games more towards win 98/me to retain win xp compatibility and compatibility for older dos based windows, which were most of the market when xp was released.hence most programs say compatible with win 95 or 98 to xp,or xp and higher.because xp is nt not dos and vista and after ran a more pure version of nt,whereas xp had to retain alot of backwards compatibility because of the large share of dos based windows back then.however even though it runs dos based windows programs with or without compatibility mode,it didnt handle windows 3.1 or earlier and only handled certain dos apps without emulation.

now imagine lets say you work for a company that designes algorythims for computer controlled lighting.say your company is unique, and had to design its own software.imagine the costs of not only upgrading you os,but your computers as well as having to hire programers to write new software for such a unique task to well assist in writing algorythims for another unique task.all in all its wasted money,or should i say if it isnt broke dont fix it,hence these companies will continue to use xp long after support ends, all the way up until it no longer meets their needs.heck i still see companies running dos based mainframes(the hardwarestore down the street still uses dos).

Have you put off replacing or upgrading your computer?

If so, why?

I'm due for a new rig, but I found that my current can do everything I throw at it adequately to the point I don't see a real reason to upgrade/replace. I don't play much games, and the one game I was going to upgrade for was patched into garbage by its developers so I stopped playing. I was going to retain my Windows 7 License, so the abomination that is Windows 8 wasn't going to play a role. I got a new video card a few months back that cut my video conversion times by a third. I just don't see the need anymore.

Sadly though, I already bought a new case as it was on sale. Maybe if the i7 3770k drops below $300 I'll bite the bullet, but I just don't see the need.

i actually like windows 8 except metro, which can be fixed with an app,but eliminating metro pretty much turns it into win 7 with the core operating system somewhat revised formore stability and speed.i currently have a win8 phone,it took a few days to get used to how different it is from android and ios,but its quite amazing, fast and glitch free, however metro on a desktop computer i feel is complete trash.

Isn't LGA 1150 now available?
