So I will try and make it as spoiler-free as possible, if I do have something to spoil, I'll put it in the spoiler thingy.

Now.

Lets start off with mechanics of the game. They are good. I mean, they are the same as they were last game, add in a few and subtract a few... overall not much of a difference. If you played the initial Metro 2033, you will feel right at home in the new one.

The requirements of the game are high. Very high. I played it on the lowest resolution with the lowest settings possible so I cannot give you a proper graphics review and I won't. If you have ATI video card, you're gonna have a bad time since apparently, it's not well optimized for ATI video cards. I have ATI... so more reason not to talk about the graphics.

But now the massively important parts of the game that actually make the game: The story and the gameplay through levels and the enemies you will face.

The enemies are of 2 kinds: human and not human. Usually, like in Metro 2033, if you meet human enemies in a level, you will mostly meet human enemies is in the level and no monsters. If you meet monsters, no humans. very simple formula, very effective. You have weapons to deal with each. the most effective combo here, like in the previous game is: knife + automatic weapon (preferably AK-74 or the new KALASH) vs humans and shotgun (preferably the one with 6 shots) + revolver vs monsters. It's super effective. The enemies, well, the human enemies are the most enjoyable to fight and see how many you can silently kill before the alarm is raised then you go Rambo. the monster enemies you basically go QUAKE on them. Jump around firing shots, reloading, duke nuke'm mthfckr. The gunplay is very satisfying especially if you turn CROSSHAIR off for extra immersion. The one fault is on normal difficulty, the only I played, the human enemies are blind. You can stay 5m in front of them and the won't see you.

The guns themselves are nice. Most of the old guns make a return and as I said, previous combos are pretty efficient, no need to change stuff. There isn't a huge gun variety, but you can optimize and customize them though you know, you find most guns in the world if you look hard enough.

The level design is inconsistent. Some levels are long (30min+) some are as short as 5min. I think the shortest one is 3min... Some levels are wide and open with areas to explore and fascinating and stuff. Some are basically the metro... the hallway, there is nothing else except going forward. Forward. With little variation.

The game pulls no punches. You get no "objective markers" BS or tips and tricks and because of that, you can spend 3min in an already finished level not knowing how to move forward because you can't find the way out. Sure you have the compass thingy but it doesn't always work properly.

Now the meat of the game. The story...

Where do I start. The story is... superb. I mean, the previous metro story was great. It was an exciting journey filled with many interesting characters (most make a return) that either worked with you or were there for themselves. Over here, the tables turn a bit and the newest and most interesting of characters are not on your side. They are against you. The ones who come with you still, Khan for instance, is still on your side, still as interesting and enigmatic as ever, but the newer characters are not your friends for the most part.

The emotional rollercoaster is much bigger and much, much better in MLL (metro last light). I mean my God, people say that Bioshock infinte is a great story, and it may be true. I never played it really. But Bioshock infinite is very sci-fi-ish. The fiction in MLL is more close to home. It's more paranormal and more wierd and more conceavable in a post-apocaliptic world where radiation is poignant everywhere. I don't want to give away too much but basically you are doing what you are doing in the game as a result of the last game. The tables aren't wiped clean. There is a progression in place and you have deep, troubled thoughts about the past, the present and the future. You are a very humane human in the story though gameplay-wise you can be the Terminator. You find the thoughts and hopes of Artyom (you) in the diaries that you collect in the levels. You also experience things you never experienced before. Discover your past more and more and my God.. .it's just superb. Just fantastic. It's worth playing. I would put the story of MLL on par with Bioshock (the first one) and The Witcher series.

I don't play shooters, but my son does. He likes the game...a lot.

But in respect to the graphics of the game, he gave me this link: Metro: Last Light Graphics Breakdown & Performance Guide | GeForce

Conclusion

As is evident from the reams of technical info in this article, Metro: Last Light is one of the most technologically and graphically advanced games ever released, using the latest techniques and solutions to attain an unprecedented level of image quality. And thanks to continual optimization that occurred throughout Last Light’s development, Last Light runs significantly faster than its predecessor, even with the extra settings and new cutting-edge features.

This optimization enables the entry-level GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost to render Last Light’s full suite of fourteen Quality settings at Very High, maximum detail levels. For hardware-accelerated GPU effects a faster GTX 660 is recommended, and for tessellation we found a GTX 670 to be necessary to maintain a minimum of 40 frames per second at all times whilst simultaneously using Very High settings and PhysX. Beyond this level only Supersampling Anti-Aliasing and resolution can be changed, both of which required faster SLI configurations or a single GTX TITAN in our testing.

Metro: Last Light shows what the latest GPUs are capable of when properly utilized, and offers an early look at the next-generation of games, which will be playing catch-up in 2014 and beyond.
