A friend of mine recommended the game, so I picked it up on Steam. I've got to say, it's probably the best time I've had on my PC in a while.

I'm currently playing as the King of Sicily. Literally within about 30 seconds of starting the game, my brother attempted to usurp my crown and threw the entire realm into civil war. Sensing weakness, the muslims in North Africa decided that this was the ideal time launch an invasion across the mediterranean as well.

Thankfully, I was able to convince the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor to send armies to aid me against the heathen invaders, which gave me time to focus on putting down the rebellion. After smacking the would be usurper's armies around for a while, I graciously offered him the chance to end his bid for power and rejoin the realm.

He accepted... After which point, I promptly had him assassinated.

Not long after that, my wife assassinated my eldest son and heir (he was a legitimized bastard from another woman), so I had her killed too. I bribed one of her servants to drive her carriage off of the side of a cliff.

I am now married to a 16 year old Danish princess.

Most recently, my spymaster discovered that three of my barons were plotting to have me killed. I threw two of them into my dungeons, and I am currently scheming to have the third conspirator assassinated.

Being Sicilian is fun.

In case anyone's curious, yes, there is a Game of Thrones mod for the game too. I'm probably going to download it today.

I'd certainly say that I'm learning things about myself playing this game.

I'm not sure if that's a good thing.

I've played it since it came out. There's a new expansion coming out in a few months I think that lets you start from the IXth century and play as one of the pagans.

There are mods that allow to play pagan too, now, but yeah, nothing like the real deal.

Also, GoT mod for it is pretty good, though I feel it needs a lot of improvement. And also, you can't play anything outside of westeros, and that's boring.

Any opinion on the Elder Scrolls mod?

It's really good... but still falls short of being a great mod.

I find that the best mods are the ones that add more to the game, as it is, rather than reinventing it. Project balance. CK2+. Those mods are really, really great.

Like Medieval II Total War without the massive battles but more politics?

FYI: Rome II is coming.

Be prepared to upgrade hardware.

I'm currently giving Saddam Hussein and Stalin a run for their money.

The lords of my (recently annexed) Duchies were apparently of the opinion that my half brother should be King rather than myself. To make matters worse, every time I put down one of their plots, another would pop up immediately afterwards. I finally got so sick of the whole thing that I resorted to having my brother assassinated, thinking that it might end the problem once and for all.

I was mistaken. Before the man's blood was even cold, they turned right around and started plotting to put my sister on the throne instead.

This was the last straw. I imprisoned all of them, confiscated their lands, titles, and treasuries (a surprisingly lucrative source of income as luck would have it ) and had them banished from the realm.

The rest of the lower ranking nobles under my vassalage apparently thought that this was a tryannical move (though I really can't imagine why) and took it as justification for my overthrow. As such, I really had no choice but to start rounding them up as well. I actually think that I wound up imprisoning somewhere around 75% of the nobles in my realm through either military force or subterfuge before the crisis finally ended.

A task, I might add, in which the monies confiscated from the various Dukes I mentioned before proved to be quite useful in paying for bargain priced armies of mercenaries to subdue the would-be usurpers.

After the confict, I left all of the treacherous oafs in prison until they died of old age. If their heirs made so much as a peep after coming into their fathers' titles, they were immediately taken in for the same treatment. After roughly two generations of this policy (this particular king in my dynasty wound up living well into his nineties), the nobility finally seemed to get the message and learned to accept my gracious rule as the God given gift it truly happens to be.

God I love this game. :lamo

I bought my current laptop in mid 2012 and it can't even run Shogun at the highest settings.

Paradox titles have literally sucked in years of my life. I love virtually all of them and have bought all their titles because I love what they do.

Soooo.... Four hundred years, fifteen generations of rulers, and roughly a month and a half of on-again, off-again game play later, I can now present you all with the fruits of my (armchair) labors and ambitions:

*drum roll*

ROMAN EMPIRE 2.0 BITCHES!!!

Roman 1.jpg

Yup... I am now playing as the Augustus Emperor Gregory I (popularly known as the "Glorious") of the reborn 15th Century Roman Empire. I officially have waaaay too much time on my hands.

Still though, I think it's kind of impressive... Considering the fact that I started with the Kingdom of Sicily and a little less territory than what you see below.

The only question remaining now is whether I should start building a throne made out of the swords of my vanquished enemies now, or later. bth_Thinking.gif

I just re-installed Crusader Kings 2 last week when the Old Gods DLC came out. The game sucks you in, ad kills waaayyy too many hours. I have been playing as one of the Norse men, and have been raping and pillaging like a good viking should be doing and have also united the kingdom of Norway under my banner. I also control a portion of Denmark, and since the previous ruler who owned the majority of this land just passed away and his sons did not inherit his fathers powerful allies, it is time to invade. One problem, my councilor has not been able to forge a cassus belli, and it is still in the first decade of the game so there are not that many random title claimants to lure into my court. ohh well I guess Venice looks ripe for another sacking for now :p

And speaking of a throne of swords, since it is mentioned in the post above mine, someone has made a Game of Thrones mod for this game, I have not checked it out yet, but I saw it and it did pique my curiosity. I also strive to have the entire map look like the image above of the Nomans, except all Norse.

We're honestly more Greek and German than Norman at this point. Centuries of marrying your heirs off to Holy Roman and Byzantine Princesses can have a tendency to muddy the gene-pool a bit.

On the bright side though, it did eventually give me the claim on the Byzantine Empire I needed to be able to restore Pax Romana. You'd better believe that the Greek throne was occupied by close cousins of my dynasty long before I finally decided to bring the western branch of the family in for the kill to relieve them of it.

I've been meaning to give the GoT mod a try for a while. Now that I've more or less finished this game, I'll probably give it a shot.

Honestly though, I'm really just hoping that Paradox will create an app to port Crusader Kings 2 saved games into Europa Universalis IV. I would love to be able to march my neo-imperial legions through the heart of India, Imperial China, and Mesoamerica. evilhands.gif

The latest patch makes it a tad hard for me to intermarry as a pagan though, members of different religions flat out refuse your marriage proposals (including other pagan sects), besides my kids are still too young to start marrying off. I still need to see how the Norse power struggles unfold to determine where I plant my precious dynastic seed stock.

As of now I am just focusing on taking genius concubines, using them as breeders, and then dumping them and passing them on to members of my court to breed with :2razz: My path to dominance starts with good genetics and a good solid breeding program (this makes for a slow start). Not being able to marry outside of my religion makes things a tad more interesting long term. I may have to deliberately allow some of my dynasty to convert at some point come to think of it just to acquire those far flung titles - but ultimately I want Norse paganism to rule and subjugate the world muah-hahahaha.

Current plan is total subjugation of all the Norsemen - Norway (all mine), next is Denmark (I have the three strong counties of the main peninsula there as part of my demense - and I moved my capital there), and then Sweden (I do have 2 independent counties there already that decided that they liked my offer to become vassals). British mainland next (two strong Norse families there - the sons of Ragnar Lodbrock*), then I think I will only need about half of Finland (not Norse culture or religion) to be able to establish the Empire of Scandinavia. Ireland (also not Norse) will round out the collection for me to attain total dominance of all the north seas. From there we will see where the winds blow. I will need to reform Paganism very quickly to establish this though until then I am stuck under gavelkind which could really set my plans back with an untimely death if I am not careful. Fortunately my starting character was 16 years old on day 1, so plenty of time for him to establish a solid legacy and foundation (hopefully).

* I love the historical accuracy of many of the starting characters - I had been watching The Vikings on the History Channel, and loved to see the main character from there referenced here in game as well - was not aware he was actually based on a real person for the series.

Reminds me of all the other Paradox Games, HOI, EU and Victoria.... Blackholes of Time.*

*yes i know Blackholes don't suck. but meh, Metaphors.

Sweeeeet...

Just read on Steam today that everyone who pre-ordered Europa Universalis IV will get a free DLC to import Crusader Kings II saved games into the new program. I was expecting one to come around eventually, but I never dreamed that it would be a day one release with the main game.

Roma victor, bitches! :rock
