It can certainly be something less, one can unsubscribe from their feed updates from ugly people, negative people and losers.

Then its all happy people, babies, wedding photos and well presented meals.

And? How on earth is that any different than watching TV News or not watching TV News or only reading selective news on the Internet? As I said, Facebook is what you make it.

I wouldn't "hate" FaceBook were it not for Zuckerbergs's incessant need to erode our privacy while using it.

I dont agree on this part. You are on the Internet.. privacy is almost non existent there. If someone wants to find you, then they will find you. Only way to avoid this, is to not be in the Internet and even then it might not work. Every company connected to the internet has some sort of privacy issue. It all depends on what you define as privacy. Only way to be 100% private is not to be on the Internet.

Let me give you an example. These boards. It is not hard for an admin/or someone with access to find your IP. From that the admin could rather easily find out where you live and what your real name is. From that he could find out quite a bit of your life. Hell it might not even be an admin, since the software for these boards are know to be full of bugs and security holes.

His sketch practice of changing settings without adequate notice to users,

I agree somewhat.. but let me ask you this. This is a private company and you sign the terms and conditions when you sign up.. So cant that company do what ever it wants with in those terms and conditions you agreed too? And how long is "adequate notice"? Let me give you another example. A mobile phone maker releases a new phone and operating system, but certain features dont work on older models despite it being possible. There was no notice what so ever that this would happen.. is that right? What about those that just bought the old phone a few weeks or a month earlier with the expectation that it is fully compatible with the new software?

making it harder and harder to switch all the right toggles so a profile can truly be locked down,

On this I agree. It looks like the site was made by a linux nerd with zero training in how to make things user friendly. Navigation is horrible.. it is almost worst than iTunes for Windows or Ubuntu Linux.

that timeline thing (people delete stuff for a reason, so that it gone and not for everyone's perusal because he decided it should be).

No offence, but nothing is ever really truly deleted from the Internet or on computers. While I personally understand the Timeline, I dont like how it is done. But then again if you dont want something on your Timeline..dont post it or make the whole profile private so only people you know can see it.

That is all done in bad faith and no matter how FB tries to reassure the public they aren't collecting more data than they will admit to, these constant transgressions and aggressive changes raise red flags for me.

Disagree. They are no different than any other company. For example did you know that if you so call buy music or movies from iTunes or Amazon, then you dont actually own it? Both companies reserve the right to deny you access to your music library via their software if they suspect you of something.

If Zuckerberg displayed a greater level of integrity and respect for the user, I might have been a huge fan of FB. I like keeping in easy contact with my family and friends (I wouldn't use Farmville or any such other application). But my family and friends are not his business and nor the business of people outside my determined circle of friends and family.

Then set up Facebook correctly. However you can never prevent Facebook employees looking.. just as you can never prevent email providers looking at your email and so on.

My kids get notices from friends of friends or family they have no clue about.

And? Again settings and in this case (no offence).. parenting :) But I think it is a generational issue. My father and his sister are very "WTF" when they see my cousins 17 year old daughter show off her new tattoo, with a bottle in her hand or snogging (that is British for kissing) some girl or guy... but guess what.. that is how teenagers act :)

I certainly don't want Big Brother FB knowing who I call, how long and having my texts go through that program.

Big Brother already knows. The NSA have been snooping on calls and text for over a decade, not to mention your telecommunications companies.

That said, I don't like how some of my extended extended (2 levels) family use it to pick a fight in public, discuss private matters that are not need to know for anybody outside those effected or to make snide comments. Or, as PB said, the nasty cliquish behavior of pre-teens and teens.

Well I dont like how Fox News degrades the journalist trade and I voice that opinion on these boards. Are you suggesting to avoid this, that I should either be banned from the net or these boards be taken down? Heard about censorship? The only certain thing is that people dont have to listen to my rants about Fox News, just as I dont or you dont have to listen to who did who over the weekend on Facebook.

FB enables that behavior which I never had to confront in my lifetime, til now.

Then you must have lived in a bubble :) Teens have always been like that, usually in schools or outside. People now have the ability to rant about things that pisses them off... like these boards.. aint that a good thing? Or should we just hold it all in and at some point go "postal" with a gun to get rid of our anger? In the old days it was letters to the editor.. but then there was a censorbot called the editor that prevent most people from being heard. The Internet has changed that.. is that a bad thing?

You have wandered so far afield in this response. I'm only going to take the points that apply.

Yes, I'm on the internet but you are mistaking which kind of privacy I'm most concerned about, that which I give to FB and whatever Zuckerberg decides to do with that information. I don't like that other people I want nothing to do with can connect with me, but I don't like and absolutely abhor the idea of Zuckerberg mining my phone calls and locations.

Yes, FB is a private company and it can do what it wants and if does things I don't like, I can choose not to ever use it. That's what I have done with FB. I don't know how many mornings I have watched or read news on how something changed on FB overnight. How they made it difficult to keep a profile private. A private profile is must be less profitable? They don't want to make it user friendly for the purpose of one keeping control of their information.

You don't get the part about my wondering who the heck is the stranger asking them to friend them. Literally, the persons in question are strangers. That is my concern. The tat and kissing pics are stupid, but it's the not thee point of my concern.

No, again you are misunderstanding about the behavior. It has nothing to do with Fox or these kinds of boards. Yes, kids have been bullied since the dawn of time, but it was witnessed only by the victim, the bully and those in close proximity. Now the attack is on the internet for ALL to witness. Yeah, people talk, but a kid or a adult can have all kinds of malicious crap flung on their walls before they can delete and ignore it. And, for those who love to get immediate updates, it's on their devices before the victim can get rid of it. I know this because there is an extended family member who dished to my son how she sees stuff that is later deleted, but she saw it so she's in on what's up. She would have never known, but for FB and that feed. When idiots update their status with stuff they regret, that's one lesson they need to learn fast, but if someone comes in on the attack, as I have been witness to several times, the public display is something I've never had to contend with. And you know, I don't have to directly, because I won't do FB.

The stop using your phone. Google and Apple.. the FBI, NSA.. your bank are all mining your calls and locations. There are glaring holes in most apps that allow such mining by the app producer and far from all people actually read what permissions are given when you install. Even on a dumb phone you are at high risk.

Ahh yes the media hatred of Facebook. I tend to be skeptical of anything the media prints.. especially about technology. They are more than often wrong and often in the pocket of certain brand... in most cases Apple.

You don't get the part about my wondering who the heck is the stranger asking them to friend them.

I am guessing you are talking about your kids? If so.. how is that different than a stranger coming up to your kids in real life.. in a park for example?

Literally, the persons in question are strangers. That is my concern.

Teach your kids then. I get more strangers trying to be my friend on Skype than I do Facebook but I do know some who get no requests on Skype but tons on other things they use. It is the life of the Internet and you and your kids and I have to realign our lives around that.

If it aint Facebook, then it is Twitter, Instagram or whatever the next social media outlet is called. This has nothing to do with Facebook per say, but society and frankly (again no offence to you meant).. parenting. Problem is that parents are often relative to the children... computer and Internet illiterate. But again that is not the fault of Facebook. :) In fact I would say Twitter is way worse because it is much harder for parents to understand. I have tried to explain it to my 44 year old cousin and my own father... and they just look at me with a blank expression. They can and use Facebook and in my cousins case, she does patrol her kids Facebook accounts.

See, this is the beauty of choices on the internet. I don't have to join everything thing and thereby limit my exposure. I can't eliminate it, but I can mitigate. FB, Twitter, Instagram, not for me. I can and do choose not to give those companies access.

And the internet is different than the street. You can see them and assess a lot from what you see and all they've done is see you. They don't know your name or the names of your friends/family. That's different.

I use FB on my desktop a bit. Mainly to see what my sons are up to and I video chat once in a while with one woman in MD and another woman in Prag.

But I don't do anything with FB on my phone or my tablet, so I have no need for this app.
