PlayStation 4? Sony Press Conference 2013

These consoles don't come out that often though. The PS3 came out in 06, and the Xbox 360 came out in 05, so this console cycle has lasted a good 7 years, which is the longest of any cycle, at least to my knowledge. And this cycle is estimated to last at least as long, depending on the market, or barring some new tech breakthrough.

So yeah, the new consoles won't be outdated in less than 18 months :2razz:

:prof Just because something "comes out" years before, doesn't mean poor old farts like me can afford them until they've been out awhile.

:(

Damn. I don't have disposable income. Hopefully my kids will be off to college before I have to shell out more $$$ for another ****ing gaming console.

I don't think the casual market is demolishing the market for hardcore games,

That, I would say, was experimentally confirmed by Nintendo this last gen. The Wii was all casual, and it didn't do that great. A lot of the "new" direction Nintendo is taking for this gen is to return to serving the hardcore gamers. It's not to say they won't have casual stuff; but they're definitely pushing for more "hardcore" content.

Exactly, the console itself sold like hotcakes, because it was cheap, and appealed to the casual fan, but the software struggled, because they had a casual relationship with it, and those people didn't care to buy more than 1, or maybe 2 games a year. Especially the few hardcore games on the system.

And the Wii U will get crushed by the PS4, and Xbox(whatever the hell they call it) more than likely. It won't sell as well as the Wii because the casual gamer's already have a Wii so they won't need it, and hardware wise it is a little more powerful than the current gen. Plus the limited hard drive ain't helping it. The only real saving grace for it are the Nintendo franchises, Mario, Metroid, Zelda, etc.

That's pretty much what they bank on each time. I've been a bit disappointed in Nintendo for some time; all the way back to Game Cube when they were poo-pooing online gaming. They still do to some degree for some reason. I was hoping the Wii U would have been a bit beefier; but they are also looking into revitalizing some of the older IPs, obtaining exclusive games (such as Bayonetta 2, the first game was fantastic). So I don't think it will be as bad as the Wii...but still they have to learn to compete with the big boys too.

PS3 was a huge disappointment compared to 1 and 2. I have exactly zero enthusiasm for a PS4.

The problem is, the PS4 won't be backwards compatible because they're changing the entire internal hardware architecture so the games you own for older Playstations can't be played on the new one. Honestly, I don't know how much new they can do on these consoles to improve them, most of it is just flash and very little substance. I didn't buy into the PS3 last time around, depending on what Microsoft does with the Xbox720, I might skip it again this time. Not really sure I care anymore.
