27% of Women Would Rather Skip a Shower Than Fix an Old PC

Norton Utilities examines some interesting alternatives consumers would rather do than try to repair a dilapidated PC.

We don't know whether to be encouraged or frightened by a new "Consumer PC Frustrations" survey (PDF) conducted by Wakefield Research and commissioned by Norton Utilities, so we'll settle on being amused. The survey pinged 1,000 PC users and asked them a series of questions, starting with how they view trying to fix an aging PC. Of those surveyed, 27 percent of the female respondents said they'd rather go three days without a shower than try to fix an old computer, while a third of the male respondents said holding a significant other's purse in the mall while she tries on clothes is less painful.

A Norton representative told Maximum PC that a different set of questions was asked to each gender, which would explain some of the quirky (and humorous) responses. Among male respondents, 27 percent also said they would rather give up sports for a week than fix an old PC, while 23 percent of women said it'd be less painful to watch ESPN all day.

The survey didn't just focus on PC repair. Regardless of gender, more than half -- 57 percent -- said they "never" download or stream adult content on their PC, followed by 19 percent saying "hardly ever" or "some of the time." Just 5 percent said they do it all the time.

Take that with a grain of salt because several respondents had plenty to say on how they cover their tracks after doing the activities they denied doing. Erasing browser history was the most popular at 55 percent, followed by clearing cookies (53 percent) and emptying the Recycle Bin (52 percent).

Oh, so why did we say we were also encouraged? For a couple of reasons. For one, 33 percent of female and 26 percent of male respondents said none of the answers provided were more painful than fixing an old PC (a pretty encouraging figure for the average PC user), while 76 percent said they regularly scan for viruses. Six out of 10 also said they regularly defrag, delete files, and uninstall old programs.

Funny stuff!!

Now, I build my own, so I certainly don't have a problem fixing them.

How about the rest of you?

I have a Mac and even the cats can fix that.

My heart goes out to you poor Windows users.

I've never taken a computer in for repair. If I can't fix it? I buy a new one. ;)

If I can't fix it...or if I can, but want something better...I build a new one.

Cool cats you got there...they know how to pack and ship a computer. :lamo:rock

I'll never pay someone else or pay for software to fix my own computers. If I can't fix a software problem, I'll just re-install the OS. If it's a hardware problem, I'll buy the part I need and install it, even if its a part that requires soldering.

My hardware advice:
Keep the air vents clean and re-apply thermal grease to the processor heat sink once a year. The main shell of a computer will last for years. You can't do anything about hard drives, those seem to die every 2-3 years now (in the old days, they would last for 7-8 years). The best thing to do is a periodic backup of your important files. If you ever have to open the computer, wear an anti-static wristband before touching anything.

My software advice:
Stay away from porn sites and you probably won't get infected.

Just 5 percent said they do it all the time.

That's a lot of lying going on.

As for fixing computers, depends. If it's from 2002 where getting usable parts is difficult and if it's a small form factor, then I'd prefer not to touch it. That said, I'd rather fix it then skip a shower

not surprising, most women i know cant drive a carburated vehicle without stalling it,cant drive a manual transmission, dont know they need to change their oil without a light telling them, and thats just on cars.

most also cant setup a tv,know how to use a computer other than the power button and hitting internet explorer,or even know what to do if they get a virus.

its just more typicle of women to have desire or care for mechanical aptitutde, rather they buy something and use it til it breaks and buy another, ive seen them do it with cars, they want something they dont have to do anything but start it,shift into drive and press the gas pedal, the same logic applies to computers, they want it to work, but dont want to know or even look under its hood.

I just press the always faithful "reset all" command when mr. virus decides to play rough with mr. computer.

dont worry i have own both and work on both and nothing is more disappointing to me as a mac.

now its all preference but i know computers and MAC always leaves me unhappy, macs are for grandmas and kids IMO, people that dont know computers, dont want to know computers and are willing to do what ever the mac says, wants and makes you do.

but i do know TWO computer guys that like MACs better out of the large majority that dont, so again its all preference

You'd be very surprised at the abilities of my cats. They won't need to pack and ship the computer, they'll just fix it themselves with a little labor from me. I'm confident that they could pack a computer but I won't take the risk of them taking it to UPS. UPS will just have to come to them.

I completely understand. MACs are too logical, too functional and too reliable. There's no challenge for you. How boring life would be without directories, pop-ups and general dysfunction.
You've done the right thing.

3.)You've done the right thing.

1.) have no clue what this means? ive never shipped a computer anywhere?
2.) no to constricting and my pc has no popups or dysfunction lol but please continue to make stuff up
3.) i know :D

1.) have no clue what this means? ive never shipped a computer anywhere? - Sorry, in an effort to save binary digits, that part was a response to Mycroft. My apologies for any confusion this may have caused.

2.) no to constricting and my pc has no popups or dysfunction lol but please continue to make stuff up. I can be very creative when called upon but I don't want to have said anything untrue. So, caution is the watchword.

3.) i know . Yes, I know you know not only this, but many other things as well. Your avatar reminds me of Jesus.. Maybe you can help me out with my alchemy experiments.

I've built my own since the late 80s. I still have an old tin contacts 4meg simm that cost me $200 originally. Rebuilding a system is easier than it's ever been. It's easy to take a disk image every once in a while and just restore the entire system. Data is kept on a separate drive/partition and free of OS system files.

There is a ton of good software out there right now that will do all that for the user, and restore is just the push of a button.

But this is part of my problem with Microsoft's policy to distance the user from file management. Users don't know where their system files are and where their data resides. They don't know that the default one big partition is a bad idea.

1.) i understand, as a MAC uses you are probably only allowed to use so many ;)
2.) well you dont want to but you did none the less
3.) it is Jesus
4.) no thanks i dont believe in that

Me too. I built the desktop Im using now. I also have upgraded it a few times. This OCZ power supply seems to be dying on me. LAST time I buy OCZ for anything. I had a problem with a stick of RAM from them too. I also hear their SSDs are pretty crappy.

I've never used any OCZ stuff. I use a lot of Corsair stuff...psu, cpu cooler, ssd.

Their SSDs are good for the price. Did not even know they made PSU's or RAM.. I have 2 OCZ SSDs and they are great.

Must be some old Macs you got since the new ones have special screws and are often glued together....

You've done the right thing.

Logical, functional and reliable are not exactly the first things that come to mind for a Mac.... overpriced average computers with a closed expensive communist eco-system is more accurate.

Well I was going off the reaction from NewEgg users. It seems there is a lot of failure rates with em.
