Everything Turn-Based Strategy!

Nah I beat the computer on the hardest level. I'm that good.

Deep Blue beat a world champion in 1997. My computer has substantially higher processing ability. You just need better software!

Or I was being sarcastic.

Actually I did beat the computer on Chessmasters once on level 10, but it played the game halfway through like it was level 3, as if it just gave up for some strange reason. I really wasn't even winning noticeably.

I won't mention how many hundreds of times I lost on level 10.

I played FF Tactics, Disgaea and Jeanna D'Arc, I also dug the Heroes of Might and Magic and Worms series of games.

Turn-based games favor those who are simple of mind. I played Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy as a kid, but as an adult, depending on them is really an indictment of your intelligence.

Because we all know how brainless Chess is.

Anyway, I am a turn based strategy fan, and here is my list of my favorites over the years:

Space Opera

Masters of Orion 2 - This was my go-to for many years. The endless variety of the games kept me coming back.

Galactic Civilizations 2 - Filled the MoO2 void very well to the point where I prefer it to MoO2 in every way except the lack of turn based combat.

Endless Space - A newcomer to the 4x space opera line. It's probably too close to GC2 to be worth the money

Ascendency - A great old 4x game that added a wonderful 3rd dimension to the strategy map that all subsequent games should have copied.

Military

Steel Panthers I and II - I've played these endlessly. The amount of content between these two titles is staggering.

Combat Mission - An amazing WWII turn based game that uses a "we go" system wherein to plan your combat simultaneously in 60 second increments and then watch each 60 seconds unfold in real time. Very fun and gripping

Jagged Alliance 1&2 - Terrific squad based TBS with a staggering variety of weapons at your disposal.

Fantasy

Masters of Magic - One of the original Civ style fantasy games. It was a blast to play years ago, but shows its age today.

Heroes of Might and Magic (I-III, V) - The first three games were amazing, and I enjoyed V quite a bit too, but IV and VI are both entirely forgettable due to some seriously questionable mechanical changes that all but broke the games.

Age of Wonders - A true MoM remake in every way. It is a blast to play with some very fun mechanics.... but some truly broken mechanics as well (Flying hero + hand cannon FTW!)

Wizard - A new game in the genre that I actually tossed aside after a few hours with disappointment but picked it up again recently and developed a respect for it. The problem is, in the age of no manuals, most of the game's depth doesn't become apparent until you've played more than a few hours. It's essentially Civ 5 Fantasy.

Sci-Fi

X-Com (old and new) - Fantastic games pitting soldiers against invading aliens. The new version is a blast, but very difficult, and the randomization methodology makes Save-Reload less effective... your soldiers will die... a lot.

Final Libertaion -A wonderful Warhammer 40k Epic game based on the Steel Panthers format.

Fallout Tactics - A fully realized Fallout strategy game that plays a lot like Jagged Alliance.

... and I should probably stop there, but there are many more good ones.

Not the same, but a good retort.

I was speaking along the lines of video games.

I mean, do you think the hardest RPG of all time is Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior?

The majority of of RPGs are turn-based, so that's huge pool of RPGs to draw from to compare to 25 year old games. In fact, I don't even understand the point you are trying to make. Turn based strategy is way different than turn based RPGs. All RPGs tend to be easy if you simply overlevel or over farm, whether turn based or not, it's pretty much the same.

.

Wizard?? Some kind of indie game? Never heard of it.

Oops. I might have gotten the name wrong. Hold please. :)

Edit: Ah Hah! I'm wrong. The name is Warlock.

Fallen Enchantress is like Master of Magic and is pretty good. I wish it had multiplayer, though.

You ever tried Anno 1404 (AKA Dawn of Discovery )?

It's an awesome often overlooked game, even by people who are major fans of the genre. (it's kind of like a civ game with more focus on city infastrucure and resource gathering.).
