Windows 8 Sucks!

OMG you are CORRECT. The forthcoming Imac has no drive!!!WTF!!!! That does NOT make me very happy. I'll have to add a CD/DVD/RW as a separate piece of equipment. The only plus is that those drives are the most vulnerable. My current Imac had its drive die at about 2.5 years of age but I had the extended warranty. At least this way if it dies, I don't have to carry the whole machine in for repair but still......

Well, aside from the Mac Pro (in need of a revision itself), all of their current products are absent an optical drive. The iMac, in the effort to be sexy, has removed the drive. The consumer would be dependent upon external storage mechanisms and the cloud.

If my DVD died, I'd just go to my local computer store...buy another one for about $25.00...pop it into my case...and I'd be good to go.

Or...maybe I wouldn't. I hardly use it now...I probably wouldn't miss it.

What about all the software that requires you to have the DVD in the drive when using it because of security reasons? Cant get around that. But I agree. I would go on NewEgg.com and buy one that plugs into a USB. Pretty goofy Apple doesnt include a drive with it. Now you have to clutter your desk real estate.

I mostly use it to copy movies that I get from the library and then burn them when I have time to watch them. Otherwise, I don't use it much any more either. I back up to Amazon cloud storage what few things I have that I can't afford to lose and every 6 months or so I burn a DVD of the zillion cat photos I have taken. But the movies for sure would need a drive.

I generally do it because download and installation process for many large applications, including OS's sucks with the current bandwidth allocations for most people. Hell, if I could have quickly located DVDs instead of downloading them, I would have done so, and it would have saved me hours.

But back to Windows 8: I am amused at the opinion pieces that say Win 8 is great for multi-tasking in comparison with Android and iOS. Well, great, but how is it in comparison with most other OS's? To me, it seems too damn much imbued with the one-thing-at-a-time mode of operations in the tablet market.

This is the price you pay for running out and buying something when it first hits the market. You're better off waiting a week and hearing everyone else moan before you waste your money. I'm on windows 7 and if I ever decide to upgrade, it will be to a free version of linux.

You really should consider upgrading your software...those security measures are pretty much old school.

But then...you like XP.

I have the Asus TF300T tablet with keyboard dock. It runs Jellybean. I like it, but I can't wait to dump it for the Asus Transformer Book with Win8 and a Core i5 or i7. Then I'll have a tablet that can multi-task as well as run any Windows program.

What I don't like so far is that it is so layered that you have to spend a great deal of time just setting things up for basic operations in order to do basic multitasking. I fear with all of the programs I have opened at once, with multiple windows, that this thing is just not going to be favorable for me at all. It seriously makes me think of moving to Linux, after years of scoffing at their snottiness.

I guess I don't understand what you mean. What things do you have to set up for basic multitasking? I've had a movie playing in my Internet TV program, played music in the new Windows Media Center app, while downloading with BitTorrent...and browsing in Opera. All at the same time. No setup required.

Im starting to think you dont know much about what we are talking about here. It has 100% nothing to do with "upgrading". And its NOT "old school". You dont 'upgrade' software to change how their company requires you to use their security measures. There are software that has been released very recently that forces you to have the DVD in the drive in order to use it. Its to prevent people from using a cracked version of it. Not sure on the success of that, but it is what it is.

LOL!!!

What I meant by "upgrading" is dumping companies that use that outdated security.

Anyway, with the few pieces of software I've installed in the last year or so that I actually used a disc to do the install...mostly games...none of them require me to keep a disk in the drive. Maybe I've been lucky and have avoided the one's you speak of.

I assumed it would, since Windows 7 was good. When they come out with Windows 9, it will fix all the new tech that Windows 8 added but they didn't work all the bugs out of, and I'll buy it.

I won't buy Windows 8 I'll just wait for Windows 9 because hopefully Microsoft will learn that what they did was a horrible idea.

P.S. Up yours Apple.

10 reasons why Windows 8 is great for traditional PC users

Opinion It's not all about touch-enabled tablet convertibles
The big noise around the Windows 8 launch involves touch-enabled devices like Microsoft's own super-slick Surface.
But Windows 8 is great news for regular desktop and laptop users. Here's 10 reasons why.
(the article expands upon each reason)

1. It's dirt cheap

2. It's less confusing for PC users.

3. Quicker boot times

4. Faster all round

5. Better battery life

6. It looks better, too

7. Two operating systems for the price of one

8. Those touch-enabled Modern UI apps

9. Internet Explorer isn't half bad

10. Improved security and data recovery

Bottom line: This is the best new OS Microsoft has come up with and it defines the future of computing.

Look man. I think it sucks so, YOU should also think it sucks.

And by the way, its MUCH less functional. I dont want tiles. I dont want stupid Charms either. Where is the Control Panel?
And Im a big supported of Microsoft over Apple but regarding touch screen OS's Ill take Apple over Win8. Why? Because it makes sense. Its an intuitive OS unlike Win8. I never thought I would say that.

Where it always has been...

On the Start menu, press you right mouse button and you can access "all apps" and guess what you find there? If you want, you can even pin it to the start menu!

I don't want to stick on Win 7 forever and do eventually want to upgrade to Win 8. Buying one with Win 7 would require (I believe) a $15 purchase to upgrade to Win 8. Although I'm tempted to buy one of the Lenovo Y series laptops while they are on sale for the next few days, then again they are about to come out with the Y500 which may be worth the wait. I'm looking for a gaming/media/school laptop (I don't care much for low weight slender laptops built for portability).

Also, if anyone has recommendations please PM me, I would greatly appreciate advice and I tend to do tons of research (weeks or more) before actually buying expensive items.

There are several touch screen laptops with Windows 8 out there, and they are gaming friendly.. since Windows 8 has a smaller footprint than Windows 7.

I have been running Windows 8 now for 2 days almost.. and it does not suck.. far far from it.

It is fast as hell for one. Never thought my SSD OS could start faster than the 10 seconds it did under Windows 7... well it can. And shutting down is almost instant now. There seems to be SSD improvements in Windows 8, since my SSDs Windows Experience Points went from 7.8 to 8.1.

There is 99% compatibility with programs.. apps for you mac users.. and those that are not compatible, well either they are ancient or there is a windows 8 compatible version. My anti-virus for example did not work, but of course via the Microsoft Store I could get a new compatible version.

For years I have never really used the Start button, only for minor things. I had made shortcuts on my desktop or on the taskbar. Now that has changed.. the Start menu/page in Windows 8 is brilliant and very interactive. I dont have to launch my mail program to see if there are new mails... it tells me when they come in. I now have a combined contacts list across different services, instead of having to run several programs or webpages. Saves time and energy. The list of improvements goes on and on in my opinion. And as a bonus, my desktop is now clean and I can actually see the picture I have there...

Now there are a few negative sides of course.. no new OS is bug free... Mac OS and iOS users can confirm that. But so far the bugs I have found are minor and not OS breaking in any way and often can be bypassed or tweaked so they are not a problem. There have been no WPA bug that prevents wireless logging on, wireless signal dropping, no security holes out of the box I am aware off and from what I can see on laptops running this OS.. no battery draining problems .. unlike on another recent OS launch.. cough Apple.. cough.

I did found a bug with my outlook.com account and the people app.. one that Microsoft is aware off and looking into... and to fix that, I just reverted my outlook.com account back to a hotmail.com and voila it was fixed. Not that I will ever need to access hotmail.com anymore (unless it is on another PC... which I wont since I dont use it that much), since the mail app is simple to use and meets my needs for most things... and I can have multiple email accounts, which is nice.

One thing that pisses me off a bit, was that it was only the US that got free commercial paid Xbox Music access... booooooooo.. the rest of the world can only get 30 days free and then we have to pay.. /rude. Had really looked forward to that service sigh.

But every day I get deeper into the OS and find new tweaks and gems and time will only tell if it is a hit or miss.. but from the reports I have seen, this might just be the fast selling OS of all time.. which is impressive. I am actually thinking of buying an Xbox so that I can use Smartglass with my Android phone and tablet.... it is such a cool feature.

So ... Windows 8 does not suck..... Apple OSX and iOS does however! Apple is the evil empire! :)

THAT is NOT a Control Panel. Its a watered down set of very basic options. Face it, Microsoft locked down the OS so much that a computer savy person cant change it! Im pizzed! Windows 8 is the retarded cousin of Windows 7! :crazy3:

Also..... When Windows 7 came out it was much faster at bootup. What happened? Patches. I think about FORTY GIGs of patches. Win8 will slow down too.
Face the facts!

Sorry...you are wrong.

When I select "All Apps" button I get the following:

When I click on "Control Panel" I get this:

Now...tell me how my Control Panel is watered down.

I have waited to upgrade to Windows 8 due to possibly buying a new laptop soon. I don't want to spend $40 if I don't have to. I'm almost wanting to wait to buy new laptops developed after the Windows 8 release that are designed to run on the OS.

If a laptop runs Win7 it will Run Win8.

My biggest complaint about it is the segregation between the desktop and metro environments. Microsoft really should have built a hybrid environment to bridge the two. At the moment when you launch a desktop app from Modern it kicks you straight back to the desktop. I have recovered my start menu, which i rely on. Modern is nice, but really I don't think it's needed. I don't like the way apps take up the full screen, I have a 24 inch monitor and apps take up too much room. And most apps only offer the same functionality offered by a web browser, ex: reddit, youtube, wikipedia. I guess I don't mind it as an option, but virtually forcing people into it doesn't seem like evolution to me. Maybe when windows 9 rolls around it will be vastly improved. I also don't like the split screen options (only 34%) and no keyboard shortcut for them.

Nonetheless it is an improvement over Win7 and runs even better.
