I thought the specs were pretty disappointing when it came out. It doesn't even compete with the current crop of android phones, let alone what will come out in the next year before the iPhone gets another iteration. It seems like pretty much the only thing they added was 4G, which the last one really should have had.

Ummm...

Who cares?

Dude...just watch the funny video and laugh at those stupid Apple users, eh?

While specs, as far as internals, are useful it really harkens back to the old PDA days of WindowsCE/PocketPC's vs Palm products. Not shockingly, us PPC users shouted the same thing at Palm fans that the android fans now shout at Apple about specs. However, it was as somewhat off base then as it is now. Palms had less RAM and less processing power, but in part that was due to an OS and platform that didn't REQUIRE the same level of power than PocketPC required to run smoothly. Actually, on the contrary, often with LOWER specs the Palm's ran smoother than some PocketPC devices. We're in a similar situation with iOS/Android. Part of the benefit of Apple's tight control of hardware and software is that they can better blend their OS and hardware to the point where they may not have as much need to have the spec boosts other OS's may have.

It's something that we tech geeks will love to argue about and hang our hats on, but utlimately for the average consumer what processor speed or how many cores or what your RAM size sits at are all relatively secondary to "Does it run smoothly and seem fast".

I've got no urge to run out and buy the iPhone 5, but there's no doubt it'll be an attractive enough phone for many phone buyers to place it once again as the highest selling smartphone in the US. Tech geeks can scrunch up their nose and tuttut all they wish about the "sheeple" buying into marketting, but unless Apple's spent the past few years developing advertising technology on par with Lightspeed Briefs, the reality is that those 2 million pre-orders can not all be chalked up to that. There are legitimate user related reasons why one would purchase an iphone over a Droid / BB / WP7/8. Marketting does play a factor into things...but then again, welcome to business, capitalism, and the market. But it's hardly the only factor.

It is another catch up phone and it does not even catch up to the top end of the phone market. As it stands now, Apple iPhone is a very expensive mid-range phone with an outdated operating system.

Saying that, I have no doubt that it will sell well, especially in the key market of the US. Elsewhere, well.. since Apple in their wisdom have not put in a 4G chip that is compatible with the most popular 4G spectrums around the world, then the only "upgrade" is the larger screen. At the moment the new iPhone wont work on the big cell phone providers in Europe (Vodafone, Deutch Telecom) because of this (4G wise), and they are mega pissed to say the least. The amount of bad press that Apple has been getting over this is quite big.

Add to this the flap Apple is receiving over the new connector... and the fact the new iPhone 5 wont include a converter.. so not only are all your iPhone add-ons now useless with the new iPhone unless you have a converter, but that converter is not included in the phone so you have to fork over another 30 bucks to get that converter. Of course if Apple had included NFC like everyone else, then this would not have been a problem since all connections could have been done wirelessly.. but nope not in Apple world!

And I would wait to see battery life on this phone. They skipped over battery life at the presentation basically and I suspect that their projects are highly inaccurate.. they were for the 4S and now you have a 4G chip in it, and 4G is a huge power sucker... plus the battery is no bigger than the 4S.

On top of all this... iPhone 5 is not compatible with China Mobile... and that is a big threat to Apple in the medium and long run. This should have made the shares in Apple fall like a rock, but nope... ahh the magic of the Apple bubble.

Now the ironic thing is the 2 most advanced phones out there at the moment.. one is from South Korea.. aka the Samsung Galaxy 3 and one is from Finland/US.. in the Nokia 920.. with the Nokia taking the top spot on specs. Wireless charging, NFC, a camera that is the best on the market and the best screen out there (yes even better than Apple's).... times are changing and Apple is slowly but surely falling at the side .. at least technology wise.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it will be wildly successful. It's just that in the past, when a new iPhone came out, it was generally on par with, or slightly ahead of competing phones in terms of the specs. This one isn't, which is kind of odd. Really, it kind of seems like the iPhone 5 is what the iPhone 4S should have been. That's not going to stop people from buying it of course, but it makes me wonder if Apple is starting to try and play catch up rather than innovating.

It's inferior to its biggest competitor: The Samsung Galaxy SIII, Android phone.

But it will sell millions and millions of units because fan boys (and girls) really don't care about inferiority...they care about the name.

Only thing I don't get is why some of these morons feel the need to run out and buy a new phone every freakin' year. Hell, my Galaxy IIS works just fine. It'll continue to work just fine next year. Probably the year after that.

iPhone users, actually all Apple users make me laugh.

I dunno. Android phones pretty much have the market cornered. Apple would have to sell a CRAP load of technologically inferior phones to catch up.

Edit to add:

Apple's problem is they aren't really attracting new users. Their sales are largely return customers. So yeah, they're selling a good chunk of phones, but they're not really increasing their market share. It works for them, I suppose, 'cause money is money. It's just pretty crappy that a disingenuous company like Apple has such loyalty from their consumer base.

Oops! The graph in my earlier post is for the global market. Graph below is for the U.S. Android still wins, though.

I expect to see that "other" percentage change quite a bit in the next year or so.

Win8/WinPhone8 is coming soon.

Win8/WinPhone8 is coming soon.

Boyfriend's really excited about Win8.

I've been drooling over the Galaxy SIII for about three months now, and I really, really, really want it (or its replacement) when this phone (HTC Thunderbolt) finally croaks. He might convince me to get the Win8 phone, but I remember previous windows phones that kind of fell flat...wasn't really a fan of them then. Maybe Win8 will blow my mind.

Lots of people buying new computers after next month will be getting used to Win8. A lot of them will be looking into WinPhone8 as a result. Very similar UI's and operation.

Myself, I'll wait. I won't put Win8 on my computer till touchscreen monitors come down in price and my VirginMobile Motorola is a good phone. I'll be looking into Win8 tablets, though. Eventually, all my devices will be Win8.

I just got Win7 back in January on the laptop I purchased for school. I'm still getting used to the changes there.

The way I see it, millions of people have been getting used to stroking their phones and tablets. Heck, I hate trying to type on my phone, so I talk to it. Much easier. I can't wait till I can afford to stroke and talk to my desktop. Add in motion detection and in 5-10 years nobody's going to be using a keyboard and mouse anymore.

Win8 is just the start.

Every time you said "stroke" my brain flashed "Giggity giggity goo!" in neon.

I suspect that with all the problems with the new iPhone 5 and the inability of Apple so far to contain the negative reviews and media coverage .. that sales might take a rather big hit. Already the first weekend "only" sold 5 million, which was quite a way off the 7 to 10 million most had expected.

I picked up the SIII recently. It's a pretty solid phone. I had switched from an old iPhone 3GS, worlds different obviously.

One thing I discovered, though, the touchscreen on this thing is like way oversensitive. I swear it detects stuff that's just near the screen. The big screen and superfast camera are awesome, though. The navigation system is phenomenal too, and leagues ahead of Apple's new maps system. (why oh why did they dump google maps? google is the undisputed king of map software!)

Tectiles are underwhelming, though. They're little sticker things with a chip in them, you can hold the phone up to them to cause activations of certain commands. I.E. the one by your bed turns off the ringer and launches the alarm clock app or the one in your car turns on Pandora. Great idea, terrible implementation. There just aren't enough options to program into the tiles.

I like mine. I've been due for an upgrade for a year or so, and just happened to get lucky when I walked in to use it. It's not that much different from the 4s, except asthetically. I've had an iPhone since the first one was released and have never tried an android though. So my comparison of it to another phone would be worthless

I will personally skip Windows 8 and the Windows 8 phone mainly because I hate what they are doing with it. I will never buy Windows 8 period on a computer or phone. I would love to get a Galaxy SIII because I like Samsung and Android.
