Zimbabwe Army Possibly Staging Coup

From what I am reading there is at least some hope that the opposition can form an actual democratic government but we shall see what happens I am betting on military rule or just another dictator.

That country is so screwed up, it'd take UN intervention to sort things out and get something together. Otherwise, it'll end up a military junta or something resembling Somalia.

President Mugabe defies expectations, declines to resign
In a meandering speech, Zimbabwe’s embattled president made it clear that he has no plans to leave power and suggested he could make reforms to satisfy his critics. In the past week, Robert Mugabe has faced a military takeover and the largest protests in the country’s history amid overwhelming opposition to his rule that was underscored Sunday when his own party, ZANU-PF, dismissed him as its leader and pressured him to step down or face impeachment.

It's hilarious that people think he's just gonna say "Okay! I get it! I'll resign!"

It's bizarre that the generals in the room (who presumably were part of the coup) shook his hand and looked baffled! It's looking like impeachment now!

'UN intervention' never sorts anything out. At best it lends a aura of 'international approval' to what others have sorted out. What we'll get is what we have had for 30 years or so, a Shona dictatorship

The Shona are about 70% of the population as I recall. At independence ZANU was the Shona party; ZAPU was Ndebele. So long as tribal loyalty is primary, the government will be Shona.

It won't resemble Somalia because it's not full of Somalis. They are "special."

Well... Not really no mate.

I mean look, Zimbabwe is pretty messed up but to warrant an invasion?

No, in an ideal world yes but in reality no, their country and government was able to remain fully intact through over 10,000,000% inflation.

Now this did actually cause some economic damage to South Africa because of loss of trade that was there before and a ton of refugees, economic and political coming in but overall, the situation in Zimbabwe is simply an internal power struggle among their elites and does not warrant an invasion.

Invasion? Where'd that come from? Not me, that's for sure.

I'm talking about international assistance in sorting their **** out.
No troops....no guns...no wars. Just a bunch of stuffed suit diplomats to lend a hand to get their house in order.

Sorry, went back and read what you said and when you said intervention my mind went completely the wrong way.

Well that did happen once, during the 2008 political crisis in Zimbabwe, South Africa and others in the SADC (South African Development Community) stepped in to negiotate a power sharing deal between Mugabe and the opposition.

Not sure all that happened with that but it did provide a period where it was thought perhaps Zim could come out of this nonsense... Yeah clearly didn't happen.

South Africa, Botswana and to a much lesser extent Mozambique are more than powerful enough to contain and nudge Zim into playing nice and not do stupid ****.

But that's Mugabe, Morgan Tsvangirai and, at that time South African president Thabo Mbeki concluding the power sharing deal.

It won't resemble Somalia because it's not full of Somalis. They are "special."

Since 2010 Sweden has granted citizenship to 11,338 Somalis. None have been in any way 'vetted' - claimed names and dates of birth etc. have been accepted without question. The US has 32.5 times Sweden's population, so that is like 368,485 being given US citizenship.

Somalis are indeed 'special'. They are especially poor at integrating into Swedish society or getting a job and have a special, not to say spectacular, crime rate.

In Somalia they are both cowardly and vicious.

Mugabe resigns: Zimbabwe celebrates end of an era - BBC News

I can totally understand why people a jubilant, why they are celebrating, it must be a great feeling...

I feel for the people of Zimbabwe... They will soon forget this moment, whoever takes over might be just as bad and brutal as Mugabe was.

Thank you Jack - interesting links

Once it is wrecked it is wrecked.....

But it was for a good cause, right?

The country has such rich potential I would not rule out a comeback if the new government does the right things.
