Federal judge rules women can get abortion pill without doctor visits

The woman having an abortion is not committing suicide.

You assert that when a person chooses a particular option, the chosen option is the absolute best option for them siting "choice" as the only qualifier. You made this comment in a discussion regarding the health of the woman.

Your assertion is ridiculous. People make choices all the time that are not in their best interests. Previous choices made that lead to making a choice regarding abortion demonstrate this well.

I only point out that people also choose suicide. People also choose options leading to addiction, injury and illness.

Simply making a choice does nothing to qualify the chosen option as the best option.

Are you asserting that every patient undergoing any procedure perfectly understands as well?

Not in the slightest.

We depend on our doctors to help us make these decisions.

Depriving the doctors of the opportunity to actually SEE the patient will undermine the possibility of rendering a good diagnosis and a good recommendation.

Do you realize that you are arguing in favor of reduced medical care for women?

The abortion study showing 95% satisfaction was done 5 years after the abortion to see if women still thought abortion was the right decision. If you have some statistics on how well satisfied women were 5 years after their suicide we'd love to hear them.

I did not read this entire site's content, but I assume that the 48,344 people who were successful in their suicide attempts in 2018 registered no complaints in 100% of the cases 5 years later.

By your standard, Suicide is even more satisfactory than is Abortion.

On average, there are 132 suicides per day.
White males accounted for 69.67% of suicide deaths in 2018.
In 2018, firearms accounted for 50.57% of all suicide deaths.

So are you the best decider of what is best?

Would a doctor over ride her decision?

Seriously, when a woman chooses abortion.....she knows what personal, social, and financial resources she has.

She knows what an abortion is. She knows at that point in time if she has an abortion there will not be a baby born.

The doctor does not know what being pregnant could mean for her.

Seriously. Is the doctor going to magically make sure she gets enough shifts while pregnant to pay the rent? Is he going to magically make sure her born child is safe and secure if she has complications?
Is he going to pay her bills as she loses shifts because of pregnancy or no longer can do extra shifts when needed to make rent that month?

What is it that you want? Clergy on board? Psychiatrist on board? An ultrasound that projects a happy healthy life in 9 months?

An overwhelming number of women do not regret their decisions 5 years later.

What you are saying is that there should be no telemedicine before prescribing anything. it needs to be in person.

Or is it none before prescribing anything except drugs which you find objectionable?

Yup, women need to be counseled by a doctor, and we're not talking about no female docs neither, before getting an abortion because they obviously don't know how to evaluate their situation. Only a male doctor can do that. Besides it's bad form to deprive a man of his right to make a good recommendation to a woman.

No. It doesnt matter because as long as the woman pregnant is the one making the request, it is her choice and not one the doctor should determine is right or wrong for her based on whether she's crying or not.

Yup. I suppose you're right. Prescription drugs should be available like candy in a jar on the counter.

Do you know what a telehealth visit is? My son recently got a new prescription from his doctor via telehealth visit. How is that different than this?

With the greatest respect, this decision is being made at a time of stress in any person's life. The decision itself is a weighty one.

18% of those choosing an abortion are teenagers. Some are younger than age 15. Among the various qualities demonstrated by folks in this age group, extreme wisdom is not the most prominent.

I am in no way arguing that the abortion should not be performed on demand.

I am only asserting that this is a serious consideration and limiting the input from the most critical source of expertise to inform the decision seems cavalier at the least and negligent at the worst.

"Who Has Abortions
18% of U.S. women obtaining abortions are teenagers; those aged 15-17 obtain 6% of all abortions, teens aged 18-19 obtain 11%, and teens younger than age 15 obtain 0.4%."

If I happen to diagnose a compound fracture of my leg when I notice that a jagged part of my tibia is exposed as it ripped through the skin during the auto accident, I may choose to see a doctor.

You may chose a different course.

I FEEL that my choice is more wise than yours.

In any event, my consultation with a doctor will almost certainly draw on their expertise to help with the best course toward a good resolution.

Your belief that doctors are not equipped to help with health considerations is interesting.

I was under the impression that the government should not be placed between the doctor and the woman. Has that changed?

I am a nurse and many consents and approvals for treatment and medication are at a stressful time in a person's life.

You are grasping at straws.

Seriously.

So a doctor can decide if an abortion is a "good resolution" for the woman? A woman knows what she is socially and financially able to handle. The woman decides if she has the ability to safely and securely remain pregnant within the context of her live/work /family situation. A doctor decides if abortion is medically appropriate and will tell her of the risks of medical abortion.

Good resolution?

I hope your son is feeling better.

There are different drugs prescribed for different conditions in different circumstances.

Yes. Nothing about an abortion would require more than a telehealth visit and screening questionaire for such a prescription. The doctor can even see or at least hear (although our doctors require video chat) if the person is crying. There's no reason a zoom meeting can't take the place of in person for this prescription.

And my son has seizures. We were changing from a liquid medicine (that he hated) to an easier chewable.

With varying levels of stress, every time I have been prescribed prescription medicine, there has been some sort of stress.

In most cases, those prescriptions have been in person with my regular doctor. On one occasion, it was in person with a substitute doctor that almost killed me.

All prescribed drugs are limited to prescription dispensing for a reason. I'm not certain, but I have always assumed that the reason is the safety of the patient.

The do no harm thing is a good guideline to follow and accurately assessing the condition of the patient seems like a good first step.

Unless the situation demands a remote assessment, in person seems like a better approach. However, as I said, an in person exam by the moron who almost killed me was "in person".

So cool, safe accessible geographically available in person abortion services for all that would like consultation and service. Agreed?

Are asserting that a phone consultation is better than an in person consultation?

Well they are adapting to the times. Since travel during Covid times is a risky activity and many states have abortion clinics that are few and far between.....seems like telehealth for abortion consultation and possible medical abortion prescription by mail seems reasonable. Or perhaps you are thinking of having an abortion clinic in every city so excessive travel is not necessary?
