The Supreme Court case that could end Roe v. Wade, explained

2/26/20
The constitutional right to an abortion is most likely in its final days, though there is considerable uncertainty about whether the Supreme Court will explicitly overrule Roe v. Wade or simply hollow out the right until it becomes meaningless.

continued @ the link above

Next Wednesday the SCOTUS will hear arguments in the case of - June Medical Services v. Russ. This case could have a far-reaching impact on Roe v. Wade.

In 2016 SCOTUS struck down two provisions of Texas law in - Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt - that made it more difficult to obtain an abortion.

June Medical Services v. Russ - will test a Louisiana law that is nearly identical.

However, this is 2020 and will be the first major abortion-related case before SCOTUS since the anti-abortion judge Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed by the GOP as a SCOTUS justice.

I don't know enough about either case to throw in here. However, I have to commend you on an excellent OP. It is informative and shows the potential of a situation without an obvious bias in one direction or the other

Thoughts about the coming June Medical v Russ: The SC even though largely conservative and Catholic is between a rock and a hard place. The backlash if Roe is struck down would adversely effect the election for Trump and Senate Republicans, so I doubt they will reverse it. However, if they allow states to further restrict availability of abortion they risk another suit because Roe says states may regulate but they may not unduly restrict access to abortion services.

It's decidedly strange why conservative Christian men are so intent on controlling the reproductive decisions of women outside their own religious venue when they can't even keep their own women from getting abortions at the same rate as all other women.

There is not time for the SCOTUS to rule on a law before the general election campaigns start. Planned Parenthood will get what they want: abortion questions during the presidential debates. I expect the Senate to turn blue.

Conservative Christians believe their churches can't be wrong because the Bible is God's Word and teaches abortion is a sin. I have news for them: The Bible is not a medical textbook.

This brings up a good question. If you had to choose one or the other would you vote for Trump or vote for RvW to be overturned? Remember one or the other...

Silly question giving a choice that is not a choice since President Trump said he is working hard to overturn Roe v Wade.

Why would a pro choice person want Roe to be overturned ?

From OP’s article; “The Supreme Court’s opinion in June Medical will most likely be handed down in late June.”
I expect the Senate to turn blue.
Striking down or gutting Roe would be with worth losing the Senate, or even the presidency, to many pro life zealots.

It isn't useless either.

"Worth losing" is 100% YOUR opinion, which is NOT based on any facts. In fact it is based on fiction. That comment does not address mine at all.

Assumes facts not in evidence.

When are you going to learn the difference between opinion and fact. It is my opinion that the SC is between a rock and a hard place.

In my opinion you are grossly in error. *

Guess what, pro-lifers?

Not even the two justices who were nominated by Donald Trump could do anything to overrule good old Ruth Bader Ginsberg when she argued against the Louisiana law. Even Samuel Alito, who was nominated by George Bush IIRC, got in to it and agreed Lousiana's law is bad for women who get abortions at Planned Parenthood clinics. So it is officially defeated without a full trial at the SCOTUS.

As a basis of secular law it is. Otherwise, all other religious texts, including the Koran, is also available for use in secular law, not to mention all other religious beliefs, including Wicca.

It would probably help to quote said comment for reference.

The Party of Trump is insisting that a fetus is a person.
Therefore, every expectant mother in the country should be applying for an extra 500 bucks coronavirus relief money for their fetus. If the administration refuses to pay the extra 500 bucks, I believe that sets a legal precedent for the Federal Government admitting that a fetus is NOT a person, thus setting up an upset in any pending case to overturn Roe v. Wade, yes?

If I have 20 babies on deep freeze at the IVF clinic, do I get an extra 10 grand?

I've never understood why pro lifers support trump as he is most likely the first president to pay for an abortion or more.

There is a reason he was pro choice his whole life, he was a playboy who doesn't like to use co dems and lives by non disclosure agreements...

The bible doesn't even support a pro-life view in the first place.

Most voters were voting against Hillary, not for Trump. There's a big difference.

Maybe electing Trump is about to pay dividends...

It's a moral issue, not a medical issue, and most of the people living on this planet get many of their moral beliefs through their religion.

All the facts about fertilization and human development are 100 percent scientific. While each zygote, blastocyst, embryo, and fetus can develop at a slightly different rate and anatomical differences occur whether it is a separate human life and living or dead are not in any way subjective or based on religion. Morals and regliion are only applied in the determination of whether an embryo should be considered human, a human, a human being, or a person and its value as such.
