Pat Robertson, a televangelist and Christian fundamentalist who has long opposed abortion rights, says the new anti-abortion bill in Alabama is too “extreme.”

The bill, passed on Tuesday in the Alabama state Senate, will, if signed into law by the governor, outlaw nearly all abortions in the state and make performing one a felony unless the mother’s health is at risk. Proposed amendments that would make exceptions for women who are victims of rape and incest were rejected by lawmakers.

“I think Alabama has gone too far," Robertson said Wednesday on his long-running TV program, "The 700 Club," referring to the hefty prison sentence for anyone who performs an abortion -- 99 years or life behind bars.

If a respected evangelical Christian conservative like Pat Robertson says an abortion law is too extreme, that should make those that support these kooky bills take a good look in the mirror. These laws are unconstitutional and unAmerican. Alabama and Georgia are soon becoming states hostile towards women!

That was the whole purpose. To go too far, and get it before Kavanaugh et al to attempt to bring down Roe v Wade.

Do these knuckle dragging idiots not understand that overturning Roe would be the death of the Republican party? Really, I'm asking.

I don't know that. I think there may be a fair amount of anti-abortion Red states.

The majority of the country simply isn't - by a long shot. Not only that, when abortion rights get openly challenged by Republicans, it has a way of bringing women and young people out of the word work to the voting booths, not normally seen in elections.

This is a big loser for Republicans nationally and could easily power Democrats to pass federal abortion laws, whenever they have the majority.

Exactly.. I'm pro-choice, but a good part of me is glad about this hard line anti-abortion stance by the GOP. Trump being the face of the Republican Party will decidedly turn the minorities against the GOP, and now with this hard line anti-abortion stance the younger women will tell the GOP good-bye.

Between minorities and younger women telling the GOP to F-off in 10 years the Republican Party will be nothing but an after thought, and that is JUST what the country needs.

It wouldn't be the death of the republican party.

But there seems to be this idea in politics that I find absurd on it's face.

"We can't pass this legislation that we really want to pass because then we won't be in power and we won't be able to pass this legislation that we really want to pass!"

It makes no sense. It's like saying "I'm gonna strike out every time so that they can never throw me out at 1st!"

It's a conspiracy, I tell ya...a conspiracy...:2razz:

i just poked around for polling by state, but only found polling by region. It seems the majority of the country favors abortion, but it's only a very slight favorability in the Midwest, and pretty much an even split in the South.

So you might have a point, from the little I've seen. Though since the South was portrayed as a region, I suspect there may be a few states down there were abortion could be in the minority. But I'm inclined to accept your general point.

I can guarantee you this. If any one of these red states pulls off passing a radical nait-abortion bill, Trump won't be president in 2021, no matter what else happens.

My guess is that Robertson agrees with the law, but would rather a law go before Scotus that has a good chance at winning.

I had to look for alternate sources to get the rest of the story.

Pat Robertson does not care about the above, he clearly goes on in saying the bill is too extreme to make it past the Supreme Court as written. It was not about calling out the principle or idea of the bill as being a problem, it was all about his opinion on how the courts will deal with likely challenges.

“Hostile towards women” or “unAmerican” or whatever else... not his point at all nor will it make any Republican look at the bill any other way.

This bill and their supporters are after driving abortions back underground, making things unsafe for women, making even a miscarriage a law enforcement matter, and punishing the most vulnerable in the process. Pat Robertson would agree with their intentions.

Yes. He does not think the law is too extreme (he probably thinks it is not extreme enough). He just thinks it is too extreme to get past the SCOTUS.

That's what I think he was saying. It's too extreme and isn't going to accomplish their goal.
Not that he's suddenly pro-choice.

Punishing women for 99 years is not the answer. It isn't the Christian answer either.

The blame certainly has to go towards the radical pro-choice movement who have shoved their progressive secular religion on the United States. So much dishonesty from radical pro-choice groups who claim all abortions are planned and rationally well thought out.

Banning abortion completely is not the answer however supporting abortion without any restrictions is equally reckless. The chickens are coming home to roost.

Yes, Bucky. You have told us before...she no you believe the hormones and stress of pregnancy makes a woman incapable of making rational decisions.

^^ Bingo. Robertson recognizes that AL’s law is so ridiculously restrictive that it will be struck down well before it might (stressing might) reach SCOTUS.

Cut the "unAmerican" bull****, because you clearly don't know what that even means. Now I happen to agree that the Alabama law went too far, even for me. But the pro-abortion people brought it on themselves by passing laws, such as NY, where you can kill the child as it emerges from the womb. Those people have zero limits! People like that need a kick in the teeth. You're going to get this kind of push back from pro-life when you pass laws that would make Dr Mengele proud.

I am against any laws banning abortion, regardless of the stage. Women do NOT "kill the child as it emerges from the womb". Good grief.

No, they have doctors do it for them.
