VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Francis compared abortion to a mafia-style killing Wednesday, saying it's the equivalent of hiring a hit man to "take out a human life to solve a problem."

Francis made the comments, among his strongest yet against abortion, during his weekly Wednesday audience dedicated to the commandment exhorting the faithful not to kill.

Francis said some people justify abortion as respecting other rights. But, he asked, "How can an act that suppresses innocent and defenseless life as it blossoms be therapeutic, civil or simply human?"

Tim Lennon, president of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, suggested two immediate changes Francis could make if he was serious about protecting children in the church: Firstly, he could order all bishops across the globe to report child sexual abuse to authorities, something that is not a blanket rule within the church, Lennon said. Secondly, he could order dioceses to make public their secret files on pedophile priests.
“We get gestures, we get symbolism,” Lennon said. “We have the pope washing the feet of survivors — gestures. What we need is action.”

I'm not Catholic. Why should I care what he says? I'm not going to listen to what someone who shields child molesters says.
