Irish Times exit poll projects Ireland has voted by landslide to repeal Eighth Amendment
Exit poll result suggests huge majority of younger people voted Yes

Ireland has voted by a landslide margin to change the constitution so that abortion can be legalised, according to an exit poll conducted for The Irish Times by Ipsos/MRBI.

The poll suggests that the margin of victory for the Yes side in the referendum will be 68 per cent to 32 per cent – a stunning victory for the Yes side after a long and often divisive campaign.

Great news for women's rights with regard to abortion, all walks of live seem to have voted in favor for abolishing the 8th amendment. Both urban and rural voted almost 2 to 1 for it, male and women also voted 2 to 1 in favor and all age groups voted massively in favor of ending the 8th amendment.

I was going to post this. I've been following this story, so happy to see this. They finally are throwing off the yoke of the church. I wish I could have voted on this, I am a dual citizen, I'm so proud.

This is too much, allowing women to have reproductive rights?

Too far in my opinion.

Next thing they’ll wanna vote.

I believe the official results aren't to be published until tomorrow evening.

I heard the votes will be counted tomorrow, and the results reported tomorrow evening.

Not sure how vote counting is carried out in Ireland. Americans would never wait so long. ;)

I think it is because it is a referendum, for the general election they did start counting immediately.

Breaking the possessive chains of religion. I'll drink to that.

It also validates our own SC decision that keeps abortions safe and legal. Now if we could just get the GOP panderers to the religious right to stop their endless stream of bills that wish to override the majority and bring back the back-alley butchers. The assault on women's rights must stop now.

I think it is because it is a referendum, for the general election they did start counting immediately.

The polls closed at 10 pm, but the official count won't be released till tomorrow. However, 2 exit polls with counts of 4000 voters in 160 locations have come up with the same percentages 68-32.

Saw the same thing in International Politics.

Same response:

"Finally, women's lives will be valued, at least under the law, more than the unborn's.

A life is more than just breathing. About time they value quality of life over quantity.

To Hell with the Catholics and their 'more boots on the ground' philosophy to fill their pews and coffers.

If you think the mother's will should be overcome to give birth, you do not value both equally. You are valuing the unborn over women."

Probably not a surprise for anyone familiar with this sub-forum.

The first results are getting known and so far with 4 of the 40 districts returning a vote, is 66.36% for Yes and 33.64 for No. Even on of the most conservative districts voted 60.19% for Yes.

update on the referendum, 18 districts now in, 66.19% voted yes, 33.81% voted no. It looks like it is going to be a hands down victory for the Yes camp.

Brand new update, 21 districts so over have the 40 have reported in and the margin of victory has increased. The Yes camp is now on 67.38% of the vote and the No camp on 32.62%

Up to 29 districts and the victory for the Yes camp is growing, 68.48% is Yes and 31.52 is No.

It's what leftie progressive commies do best...they kill innocents. And, it's sickening how they applaud it.

69% of the Irish population are commies?! I had no idea.

If it's like the UK, by hand in a local open-air gymnasium.

Until this I had no idea abortion was still illegal in Ireland let alone their draconian history on contraceptives.

They've become socialists, with socialist tendencies. "If it makes your life inconvenient, kill it!"

What a stupid thing to say. You don't know much about Ireland.
