In the course of our reporting, another disturbing statistic emerged: For every American woman who dies from childbirth, 70 nearly die. That adds up to more than 50,000 women who suffer "severe maternal morbidity" from childbirth each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A patient safety group, the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health, came up with an even higher figure. After conducting an in-depth study of devastating complications in hospitals in four states, it put the nationwide number at around 80,000.

"It's referred to as the tip of the iceberg because for every woman we lose, there are lots of other women that we come very close to losing," says obstetrician Peter Bernstein, the director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine division at Montefiore Medical Center in New York.

This is one reason why abortion should be legal. No woman should be forced to endure this risk. Ever.

It is 14-26 mom deaths per 100,000 live births (depending on who you believe) and those who "almost die" dont and presumably make a full recovery....I say dont flip out, the risk is negligible.

Besides, we know what the problem is, why these women die....the USA medical system is not very good.

How bout we focus on that?

Strawman...many women want to have children so I'm sure they are included in those numbers...

Easy to say when you know that *you* will never, ever fact that risk, isn't it?

I cant do anything about that, and I retain my right to speak.

There is no reason America cant get the number down to 7ish like Canada or even lower as many nations do, this is what we should try to do.

But Canada has that terrible socialized medicine. We can't do that! Why, it's downright un American. You've heard about their long wait times, haven't you? I've heard Canadian women have to wait a full nine months before they can have a baby delivered.

I am a socialist who advocates for nationalizing the entire health system for 20 years, remaking it completely, and then selling it off.

I also say that rationing is mandatory, wait times are a part of that.

Strawman...many women want to have children so I'm sure they are included in those numbers...

Doesn't really matter.

The numbers go to show how risky pregnancy really is - an we are not in a third world country.

I am in the survival group, but I still have medical issues related to pregnancy from 25 years ago. And I had the best of care.

It goes to show that even though a woman does not make a decision to abort because she is in an extreme life or death situation....she may make the decision to abort based on risk and access to reliable safe medical care and pregnancy resources (ie, how to live if pregnancy causes her to lose work, who can help her and born children if she gets ill etc)

And that's a significant risk. One that obviously isnt predictable or preventable.

Every one of us knows at least one woman that's died in childbirth or from complications of a pregnancy and relatives and friends are always praying/hoping for the best outcome when a woman goes into labor....breathing a sigh of relief when they hear 'mother and baby are doing well.' (except when they dont)

So I agree, it would be astoundingly out of line for the govt to use legal or physical force to make women accept that risk against their will. And it doesnt.

Even here in Canada, it needs to remain the woman's choice whether to take the risk or not. Thankfully, it is not in danger of becoming illegal here.

Besides, we know what the problem is, why these women die....the USA medical system is not very good.

HOW ABOUT WE HAVE BOTH? Abortion for those who don't want to carry pregnancies to term, and excellent medical care for those who do want to carry pregnancies to term?

And it is up to the patient if she believes her perceived risk to her "soul" is greater than the physical risk.

So abortion is not an option for them anyway...so your argument is useless...

Myself and one of my daughters are also near misses and we both have medical issues from our pregnancies.

Just because we survived does not mean we have no health issues afterwards.

What does that have to do with abortion rights?

Strawman...many women want to have children so I'm sure they are included in those numbers...

Wrong... but your Straw Man is a Red Herring...

So abortion is not an option for them anyway...so your argument is useless...

This is literally a logical fail...

Define "that".

If you mean childbirth deaths our thread creator made the connection, you best start with her.

What you said that was...

I think risk of death in childbirth is the reason human societies evolved the way they did. Think about it: In primitive societies, which is what humans had for most of our existence, the women had to risk death in childbirth, so the men took on the other risky tasks, like making war on the neighboring tribe or hunting big game with spears. That way, the balance between male and female was preserved. Of course, the risk of bearing children was much greater before the advent of modern medicine.

Now, we're going against the past 200 thousand years of social evolution by allowing women in the military and giving them risky jobs, like police work or fighting fires.

Strawman...many women want to have children so I'm sure they are included in those numbers...

LMAO that makes zero sense . . . do you know what a strawman is? can you quote the person that said these numbers exclude woman who want to have children?
wow talk about an instant fail

Correct in general woman should not be made into second class citzens and have thier rights violated forcing them to risk thier health and lives against thier will.

Strawman...many women want to have children so I'm sure they are included in those numbers...

I don't believe anyone said they weren't.

So abortion is not an option for them anyway...so your argument is useless...
FALSE. Abortion actually is, and should continue to be, an option for women who want kids. Just because a woman might want kids doesn't mean pregnancy can't make her so ill she cannot tolerate it.
