(Reuters Health) - Compared to teen mothers, girls who have an abortion before age 18 have no negative effects that carry into early adulthood, a nationwide study in Finland suggests.

Girls who had underage abortions tended to have higher educational attainment and were less likely to be dependent on welfare at age 25 compared to the girls who gave birth, the study team found.

No surprises here. I'd bet the same is for many adults who abort, especially if they are poor or in college/university.

You're right -- no surprises here.

This is also a very good reason for implementing better sex education and free birth control. We've got to the point in our societal evolution where women are not needed as brood mares. They have every right to pursue their own dreams and goals.

This is actually a bad thing for conservatives. For them, girls doing well is a disaster. Girls are supposed to marry old men and give birth to a half-dozen children.

The horrible thing about what you say is that there are actually people that believe it.

No. The horrible thing about what I say is that it is true.

We certainly would have reached a level of societal development, if we had fixed the legal inconsistencies and acted under the Constitution instead of redefining its words‘ meaning as well as faced the meaning of precedent.

Another lipstick on the pig moment.

Can you please point out the negatives or the falsehoods in the OP study?

Romancing the act of murdering the innocents makes me noxious.

Anytime I hear about how there were "no negative effects" from getting an abortion, I know it's BS.

There was no such thing involved in the OP program. It was about reducing abortions and it was successful.

Yours is a textbook example of a mind so rigidly locked that even good news cannot penetrate. What a miserable world that must be to live in.

That is a good thing no?

That is because you have yet to read a book on the topic.

Makes sense to me.... the bigger question is, Why are underage teens having sex..... Why are underage teen having unprotected sex. Why are "Teens" as I would assume living under their parents roof and not supporting themselves taking part in an action that could produce a life in which they are having trouble taking care of themselves.

Having a child is not a right/need, its want. Having a child is the byproduct of unprotected sex. So before we even talk about abortion, why dont we talk about unprotected sex to stop the action before we need to take ANOTHER Action.

backward thought no?

I don't know about that...I think it's probably true...morals have gone to hell in a handbasket...young girls are misled to believe there is nothing wrong with abortions...that explains the lack of remorse/repercussions...

Teens are having sex because the sex drive is a very strong one. Over half of women who abort were using contraception. As for the rest,

The most common category of reasons for contraceptive nonuse was the perception that a woman was at low risk of becoming pregnant (cited by 33% of nonusers, including 6% who thought that they or their partner was sterile—Table 3, page 298). Concerns about contraceptive methods were cited by 32% of nonusers and included mainly problems with methods in the past (20%) and fear of side effects from methods (13%). A substantial proportion of women said they had had unexpected sex (27%), with 1% indicating that unwanted sex was a reason for nonuse. Slightly more than one in five women had been ambivalent about contraception. Twelve percent of nonusers had encountered problems accessing contraception, such as financial barriers, and 10% indicated their partner's preferences as a reason for nonuse. The least common reasons that nonusers reported reflected ambivalence about becoming pregnant (5%) and fear that their parents would learn they were sexually active (2%). One-third of nonusers indicated multiple categories of reasons for not having used a method. The most common overlap was between perceived low risk of pregnancy and not expecting to have sex (9% of all nonusers—not shown).

Why is the sex driver strong? Media, Society.... sex sales now... as adults and what we allow our children to find acceptable is partly our responsibility. Our responsibility to educate our children. To just blame and say "Sex drive is strong" is a cop out.

As for contraceptives. Again Under age sex? Does anyone but me find this disturbing? I learned an amazing lesson from my sister... YES my sister... she said, if I was not old enough, or mature enough to go to the store and buy condoms. I was not responsible enough to have sex. That suck with my for LIFE.... I plan to share this with my children when they become of age.

Last but not least, THEY ALL lie...Im going to pull out....

Anyways... again.... I agree the drive is strong, I believe that sex is not something special anymore, its not meant to held dear to someone like it used to be. Children again are a byproduct of Sex....but many people seem to think its ok because abortion is a simple option.

its an option sure..... but wouldnt it just be easier to be more responsible and NOT get pregnant, then have to make the decision like an abortion in the first place? its like I have 2 choice, touch the stove and get burnt or not to touch the stove..... pretty straight forward right

unfortunately sex is so much more important than that

This may be true, but I think it would be more effective to focus on teaching people responsible behaviors.

Whoa!! Hold the phone! Totally off-base here. Our sex drives are instinctual...reproduction is the strongest human instinct and drives pretty much all the others.

It is society that has tried to change it, mold it, misuse it, abuse it, use it for manipulation, profit, and it has created many unnatural behaviors and beliefs. Some are positive and enable us to live together better as a society, some are destructive, like treating sex like it's a bad thing and should be hidden.

YES I agree..... reproduction is, You are correct, but if we take society back a couple of steps..... Is Sex not treated more like a triumph rather than a bond like it used to be? Reproduction in itself is different from sex itself. Reproduction has its intended reason "Reproduction". Sex can go both ways, a FORM of reproduction or a form of self satisfaction.

THERE IS a difference between the 2. The consequences though are usually different. Reproduction has its intended consequence. Sex on the other does NOT. THIS is the issue that I feel lacks in our children. AGAIN..... is it me or am I the only one that feels uncomfortable when a someone makes a news article or even a study, that "underage abortion" is better for teens? Why are we NOT address the fact that we are even HAVING underage abortions. THIS should be more primary over the abortions themselves.

This, to me, is like boldly announcing that water is wet.

Sex is a great thing, very enjoyable. Women do like to enjoy it and, as far as I know, do not generally use it as a 'triumph' and DO still look for bonding.

I cannot speak for men but the whole 'triumph' thing sounds more like a male thing.

*quick edit*
If I may in the most respectable way possible. While I respect your statement that women do enjoy it and do not generally use it as a triumph..... there are some women that use it as a tool, and use it in the most despicable ways as well. As a Male I can admit my flaws, but women sometimes have their ways with it too.

Agreed and usually takes 2 to have consensual sex. Like I stated in my first post... They all Lie (men).....laughing while still trying to be serious. (hence the comedian)

That is my point of correlating sex as 2 parts. Self Satisfaction and Reproduction. Its a verb that is used for 2 parts but has 2 ultimate consequences. You have a baby intentionally or you DONT have a baby intentionally. Both of which are choice a person has to live with for taking part in the VERB, Sex.

Having sex without respecting what it is, is partly the reason why we have abortions in the first place. Again going back to my initial premises, teaching our children to respect sex for what it is so they DO NOT have to make the difficult choice to abort or not abort.....
