Poland abortion: Parliament rejects near-total ban - BBC News

The government said that protests against the bill had given ministers "food for thought".
Poland already has among the tightest abortion laws in Europe, and the proposal sought to ban all abortions unless the mother's life was at risk.
MPs voted to reject the bill by 352 votes to 58.
The bill came from an anti-abortion citizens' initiative that gathered some 450,000 signatures. It was initially backed by the Catholic Church, but bishops then said they could not support one of the proposals, to jail women who had an abortion.

This is good news. But all this really means is Poland won't implement any further restrictions on abortion than they already have. Poland still has very oppressive anti-abortion laws.

But maybe in light of these protests, it will eventually lead to a liberalization of abortion law in Poland. But that's probably very unlikely to happen.

Oh the irony of Poles fighting to cull Poles. Hitler was happy to do that for them.

Well there were pieces of the ban that were not very reasonable, still as it stands Poland's laws are

In Poland, abortion is banned except in the following three circumstances.[3]

1) When the woman's life or health is endangered by the continuation of pregnancy,
2) When the pregnancy is a result of a criminal act, or
3) When the fetus is seriously malformed
Unlike in other countries where abortion is banned, women in Poland are not subject to a penalty for illegal termination of pregnancy. Consent of a physician is required for circumstances (1) and (3) above, while abortions in view of circumstance (2) above must be certified by prosecutor. Parental consent is always required if the woman seeking abortion is a minor.[4]

In addition, persuading a woman to carry out illegal termination of her pregnancy is a criminal act.

Most of it seems rather reasonable. There are exceptions for reasonable circumstances already. They don't allow for at-will-abortion, but it also says women aren't penalized for illegal termination. Not super sure how they got that to work together, I guess maybe they'd go after the doctors and not the woman. I wouldn't think they need to go beyond what they have now, as what they have now seems reasonable.

The protests did make the Polish government lighten up at least a little bit. There still are, of course, countries in which all abortion is illegal, but that doesn't stop the practice. It just drives it underground.

I see there is no punishment for the woman who has an abortion. If Donald Trump is elected and gets his way, both highly unlikely of course, we'd do Poland one better and punish the women in one way or another. We'd be even closer to the theocracies of the world than Poland is.

Punishing killers for killing innocent human beings != theocracy, fam.

I had a thought about the picture I posted, and the hundreds more that came up from a google search: Why are Polish women protesting in English?

Does anyone know?

Fun fact: When a woman is getting an abortion she not just acting on her body alone. Slogans are nice and all, but many times they frame things wrong.

Because they're taking slogans from English speakers and are too lazy to translate them?

Brainless, stupid ones at that.

That saying has never been and will never be relevant to abortion.

Poland's current law is way too restictive. Thankfully, it won't get more restrictive.

I suppose. But, why English? Has there been a demonstration against outlawing abortion in an English speaking country recently? Do you think they just borrowed those signs?

Good. The Polish government is getting ****ing scary. It needs to be kept in check.
