Successful fascism was not about policies but about the strongman, the leader (Il Duce, Der Fuhrer), in whom could be entrusted the fate of the nation. Whatever the problem, he could fix it. Whatever the threat, internal or external, he could vanquish it, and it was unnecessary for him to explain how.
This is how fascism comes to America, not with jackboots and salutes (although there have been salutes, and a whiff of violence) but with a television huckster, a phony billionaire, a textbook egomaniac "tapping into"popular resentments and insecurities, and with an entire national political party- out of ambition or blind party loyalty, or simply out of fear- falling into line behind him.

Well then we have nothing to worry about, this time, the entire Party is not behind him and the majority will not support him, so the power grab is doomed to failure. Maybe a Beer Hall Putsch is next? No, he is no Hitler, but given free reign who knows where he would take us, the imagination can get scary going down that path.

Thankfully, I think Trump is too much of an idiot to make it as a new fascist dictator.

Scary? What's scarier than incompetent fascism?
The scariest thing about Trump winning the election is the thought that he'd see it as affirmation, approval, encouragement to continue down the road...

Oh, he wouldn't 'make it'. Given that winning the election would signal to him that he's been right all along, though...

Well I cannot disagree there, but don't they all do that.

Yeah, they do. One thing though; most have won elections before. Most have at least a modicum of perspective about it and understand the difference between campaign rhetoric and operational policy. I think Trump would consider himself inaugurated. I sense a Napoleon complex waiting to be set free.

True, but I have had the feeling he thought he was running for Emperor since he first started his run, I do not think he is going to take his rejection well.

Actually, the only possible positive result of this election is the prospect of witnessing that meltdown. I expect it to outshine the worst 4-year-old-in-the-shopping-mall tantrum.
Not stocking up on popcorn just yet, though.

I prefer Tequila when it comes to watching spoiled brats throw their tantrums, already stocked up and waiting.

Good choice. Handy in any result.
