Imagine if this had been a closer election - which in likelihood it was going to be.
The 29 electoral votes could have very well been the difference.
The country would now be in Chaos because of GOP Hyper-Partisan Perversion in Florida.
This immoral behavior wasn't limited to Florida of course, just most egregious there.
This really borders on Illegality in the area of Civil Rights/Voting Rights.

While clear just how surprisingly unneeded the FL votes turned out to be in securing President Obama's reelection, it remains unclear when final Sunshine State results will be ready. At the worst, we're looking at November 20th, the deadline for counting U.S. Military overseas ballots.

But it's not those military ballots that are creating the current vote counting problem. For the most part, it's not poor performance by County Elections Supervisors or their staffs either.
No, what has once again made Florida's electoral system the object of national ridicule and the punchline of choice for jokes about compromised voting rights is the carefully calculated plan developed and implemented by the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF), the plan to suppress traditionally Democratic votes in sufficient numbers to win a razor-close election - just like this one.

The simple truth is that over the past two years, the RPOF's legislative "super-majority" elected in 2010 spent a disgraceful amount of taxpayer time focused on forcing through various voter suppression initiatives - two of which combined to create this mess.

First, they cut the Early Voting period by nearly half, from 14 days down to 8. All these early voting days were well known to GOP strategists as important driving forces for Black & Hispanic voter turnout in high-density urban areas, like Miami. Republican Governor Rick Scott sided with his party's legislative leaders in claiming the move was intended to cut down on the possibility of voter fraud - even though the verifiable fact of the matter is, voter fraud perpetrated by individuals at local voting sites is extremely rare.

Then, that RPOF legislative super-majority pushed eleven convoluted amendments onto the 2012 ballot. Most originated not with them, but with the Tea Party. The addition of those amendments created a long and winding monster mash mess of a ballot - a ballot that was daunting, discouraging, and time-consuming to comprehend, much less to complete. And so, as they say, A + B = C...sort of.
Those tactics succeeded in making it harder for many South Florida Black and Hispanic voters in particular to cast their votes.
But then...the law of unintended consequences kicked in. Those voters started channeling the Twisted Sister classic song, "We're Not Gonna Take It".
[........]
So what was the sum result of this head-on collision between partisan political manipulation, and gritty grassroots determination? In 9 different Florida counties, so many thousands of extra Absentee Ballots flooded in over the final days that the system was overwhelmed. Elections office workers have been working tirelessly to get all the ballots counted, and they will.

But make no mistake here. This situation is is not the fault of those workers or of the Elections Supervisors. It is the result of a premeditated Republican Party of Florida voter suppression plan designed to interfere with Floridians' voting rights. While it succeeded in turning the presidential vote tabulation and reporting process into a nightmare, it also succeeded in revealing the ultra-partisan priorities and poor sportsmanship of the state's leading GOP legislators, and the governor."...."

Translation: Democrats are too stupid to vote.

Tell us something we didn't already know. I'd bet 98 percent of them couldn't have identified the Secretary of State in a lineup.

Didn't EVERYONE in Florida vote in the same system?

Please. You cater your platform to idiots, you get idiots who can't operate a voting booth.

Classy, bro. Real classy.

Ridiculous. If there's one thing I really think the Federal government should be involved in, it's our voting process. If we don't have confidence in our state to protect the integrity of our most powerful tool in democracy -- our vote -- that's just pathetic.

Federal laws should delineate what constitutes a "fair election." Things like the demographics of polling places (how many required re density), how one registers, deadlines for registration, how one obtains a ballot in the polling place, who can work the polls, what kind of equipment must be used, hours, early voting parameters, deadline for mailing absentee ballots...special for military...who can work at the polls, keeping loiterers outside a 1,000-foot parameter of parking lots and entrances, what safeguards must be taken to assure the proper handling of ballots after they're cast, etc., etc.

And anyone TOUCHING the ballots or the electronic equipment responsible for counting/casting our ballots, anyone who handles registration, anyone who works the polls, reports the results, hand counts, WHATEVER -- must sign an affidavit acknowledging that any illegal tampering is subject to a $10,000 fine and 2 years in jail (or some-such).

The whole shootin' match.

The OP article is right on the money. I've seen if first hand as a Miami-Dade resident. Something they didn't mention? The Republicans didn't just lard up the ballot with silly constitutional amendments. They actually changed the law so that, instead of having a brief description of each amendment on the ballot as in years past, the ballots actually contained the full text of each amendment.

Yes brilliant!
Federal Govt should not be involved in Federal elections!

If a few states want to rig the process for partisan reasons, sure why not!
Just Brilliant Mag.
Another Red State wunder-post!

Seriously, what is wrong with them down there? Palm Beach County especially. My goodness.

And another brilliant post that says absolutely nothing. Just "You're wrong." Give me a freakin' break.

Yet another Mindblowingly Vacuous post.
I DID explain why the "Federal Govt would be involved in Federal elections" ... because a few contrary states could try and rig it.
That is in Fact what happened here.

Another Mag wunderpost that I would call a Lie but probably just .. didn't get it again .. even after I DID explain why.
What can one say to that level/Lack of sentience.

Is there something wrong with you?

And as I tried to explain...
Other states can and did attempt it as well. Though Florida the most grievous case.
And I see Maggie gave a 'like' to another OP saying the lines were an embarrassment, while contesting this one!
Yes they were and, AS I SAID, they were the Result of Voter Suppression measures.
(ie, shortened early voting/Monstrously long ballot)

Imagine, again, if the election hung in the balance waiting for these results.
The nightmare scenario for everyone - except perhaps those truly ill with partisanship.
Of course many are truly ill with partisanshin and vowed for 4 years getting rid of Obama was their main job.

It really would have been a disaster if it came down to Florida, and this isn't even taking into account the fact that, if after all the ballots are fiiiinally counted the total is very close, it could still trigger an automatic recount that would drag it out even further.

Republicans are running the polls in Florida AGAIN and it is because of them that the vote count is yet another travesty.
The Florida GOP promised to deliver Florida for Romney and now they are trying to make it so. It's pathertic
I think there a few Rpublicans here who need to be tried for treason to set an example for future elections here.
I don't care if it changes the results or not. Messing around with the Presidential election should have very stiff penalties. Heads should roll.

it's definitely time for oversight. the powers that be in Florida went too far this time.

Probably has nothing to do with the tens of thousands of ballots that have to be redone by hand under supervision of a person from each party because they sent out a form that the machines wouldn't read. When Obama lets people die in Benghazi it is at worst a "mistake" and when someone mails out misprinted ballots that nobody realized until they were already being mailed back in it is a "vast right wing conspiracy". *Yawn*
