How long will Election Day last in Ohio? - Yahoo! News

I found this article interesting and fun.

Around 8:30 p.m. (the Ohio polls close at 7:30 p.m.), the first big wave of returns will sweep onto the tote boards. These are the absentee ballots and early votes (maybe 35 percent of the statewide total of about 5.8 million) that the Democrats have been particularly aggressive in harvesting. At this moment, Obama will almost certainly hold his biggest Ohio lead of the evening in percentage terms.

That Obama margin will dwindle throughout the evening as the returns from Ohioans who waited until Election Day to vote are added to the total. By 3 a.m. Wednesday, when virtually all the statewide votes have been tallied, Romney may have moved into the lead. Does that mean that the Republicans can claim Ohio’s 18 electoral votes?

Not so fast. For in the wee hours Wednesday morning, the counties will begin their count of the provisional ballots. These are votes that have been challenged for a wide variety of legitimate reasons. They include: Ohioans who are not registered; registered voters who moved but failed to update their addresses; people who showed up at the right polling place but were directed to the wrong precinct; voters who did not bring proper identification to the polls; and those who requested an absentee ballot but decided to vote in person.

My local news claims that every polling station in my county will have observers from both parties and lawyers, either on-site or standing by. There's an expectation that if Ohio can decide the election and our margin is 5% or less, the apparent loser will sue a la Bush v. Gore.

If that lawsuit happens and stalls out at the state supreme court level again, I think Obama will win -- I think our supreme court is predominately Democratic. But Turtle would know better than I.

Frankly I'm tired of hearing about the self-centered, aggandizing Ohians thinking themselves the center of the universe. I think we should pass a constitutional admendment renaming them "Insignifcant". Sorry Pinkie, but I'm sick of hearing about Ohio, you guys are no better than the rest of us. Ohio needs to take it down a couple notches.

no, swing state voters are worth significantly more, aka they're better LOL. i'm worth even more, because i'm in florida, and we usually have closer elections than ohio and we have more evs :D.

Every goddamn election it's the same ****, Ohio Ohio Ohio.

That´s the fault of your constitution and how your elections are run.

Look at the bright side.. if Obama takes Virginia before Ohio is called, then Ohio wont matter as much :)

That's not necessarily true, other state also matter. Ohio is a pain long before the elections, their stupid primary process. Every election they act like they own the place.

Sad fact is they do matter more than other states. Them and Florida and they both act like they own the place, but cant even bloody count.

It is the way the system has become. Only a handful of states actually matter.. hell a handful of districts inside states. To me that is a problem for democracy but hey what do I know.. in my country every vote counts.

Funny how the 'insignificant' states like Iowa start the process and it may come down to Ohio to seal the deal.

Some complain about both coasts and their out of touch elites, I think most 'real' citizens prefer the President need at least some support from the must enshrined heartland. I for one take heart seeing some of the battle ground states don't touch salt water.

Could you imagine the attitude New Yorkers would have if their state decided the election? ;)

That's not the point, but Ohio thinks they're the center of the universe all puffed up.

Then just get rid of the EC and that will stop. You get on that. Let me know when you're done. I'm going to make a root beer float. :)

Just saw a story on CNN International.. live from Florida. The lines are HUGE and it takes 10-15 minutes per person to vote provided everything goes smooth...... and they have been cutting down on early voting in Florida... wtf?

Well we have the Football Hall of Fame and the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame...so we're kind of a big deal.

But, Ohio is important, because no Republican has won the Presidency without winning Ohio.

Cuyahoga County released their early vote totals and they were down from 2008 by about 15%. Same story around the rest of the state.

Biggest difference this time around was that they sent out mailers asking for people who wanted absentee ballots, which was normally done the other way: voters had to request it. 1.4 million people said they wanted one, but only 600,000 returned them. That's going to be 800,000 provisional ballots if they now show up at the polls, and you aren't allowed to open those in Ohio for 2 weeks.

Zstep-
but to be fair you have Cleveland so it all balances out...

'Merican-
I am not sure just how puffy Ohio is compared to pretty much any day in Texas, or going to NJ or NY for that matter. Fah git about it....

I would say that turnout is up based on my tiny polling place. I'm normally one of the first 10-20 ballots, consistently, every year. This year I was 72nd.

Local radio is having people call in with their experiences. Most( yep, really scientific ) have indicated 30-45 minute waits.

It's a Republican-caused travesty and there's no way around that. I waited in line over two hours to vote early. My wife tried to vote this morning but she couldn't even find a parking spot near the polling station so will have to try again later in the day.

538 and PEC both give an approximately 50/50 chance that FL will be close enough to trigger an automatic recount. The good news is that Obama doesn't need FL to win.

i hope that we're not waiting through late November for them to get around to counting provisional ballots.

i think they cut the early voting time in half this year. the voter suppression efforts are shameful.
