The looming GOP civil war -- whether Mitt wins or not

yup... still works, bro ;)

Nope, doesn't work.

Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that the people who support the REPUBLICANS in Presidential elections is increasing while for the DEMOCRATS it is decreasing.

Think about it in the last 20 years, the REPUBLICANS have either won the White House or came within a state of winning the White House. The DEMOCRATS needs a new emerging base....and fast. It can only get that by being moderate IMO

Above two statements are incorrect.

I never expected someone blinded by a Ideaological Helmet to get it... Run along now and play with your toys, the adults are trying to have a serious discussion.

Look who is calling the kettle black.

6 of the last 10 Presidents were Republicans.

6 of the last 10 Presidential elections were won by a Republican.

Your opinions aren't facts in the real world, sorry.

Fraid, the US and the world has changed since the 1980's. I for one think that America deserves a small fiscal government that is socially moderate, the GOP as it currently stands is not it.

You can duck you head in the sand if you'd like, but the US needs the GOP to modernise, relying on your usual base ain't gonna cut it anymore.

They say that dodging the facts and putting forth opinions as fact are perfect examples of self-delusion and blatant deception.

Just curious - do you have any original thoughts?

I don't know about that, because it seems like a controversial sell to bring up fiscal conservatism when you think of the Tea Partiers, Paul Ryan, and many others.

Just thought I would post this interesting article. IMO it has been coming since the rise of the Tea Party, the struggle within the GOP between the pragmatists (moderates) and the idealists (far-right, social conservatives). Can a party as idealogically at odds as the GOP survive in a 21st century climate? How can the GOP start winning over Latinos, non-christains, non-believers and African Americans (demographics that are on the rise)?

I've been hearing about a "GOP civil war" for about 10 years, now and have yet to see it.

Well they adopt the Mitt Romney tactic of pretending they are the very opposite of what they were and that they were for all these demographics all along and it was the Dems that were attacking them... then pray on the much observed and proven short memory span of Americans to see them through.

Obama's campaign depends upon believing that his 2008 promises that all were lies are not lies when he again runs on the same thing.

The difference, though, is Romney talked about the future, while Obama did everything possible to avoid his record and just shout "liar! liar! Liar!" at Romney.

There will not be a GOP civil war. tea party folks will be pushed to the fringe if Romney wins. If Romney loses, they will remain in lockstep at least through the midterms at which ranks will break for the upcoming election, but no more so than in any other year.

If Obama loses, you will not see a non-white, non-male nominee for a few more cycles at least.

Why is the fact that the far left has taken over the democratic party never talked about? Ever since Pelosi won her battle to take over the house leadership in 2004 the party has gotten more and more extreme. This year's party platform calls for unrestricted abortion at any time for any reason regardless of ability to pay. Way out of the mainstream. Traditional marraige is now viewed by the party as extreme despite the fact that 32 states have voted against gay marraige. The Catholic Church is being forced to violate their beliefs and pay for sterilizations, abortifacients and contraception. When a republican president sat in the White House dem party leadership tried to sabotage Iraq war success.
As far as winning over Latinos they have definitely reached out and are making an effort. Both US Hispanic Governors are republican including the first Hispanic female governor. Rubio is one of only 2 Hispanic Senators and republicans had 5 new Hispanic Congressional members elected in 2010. The only female Hispanic Congressional member is a republican.

Because they really haven't. There is no far left in this country. Few to no other country would consider democrats far left.

As to civil war, our government works based on a certain amount of faith. Our elected officials serve at the consent of the governed. Since Nixon, this faith has deteriorated. We don't need a return to blind faith, but a little more reason and understanding that the other side of the political isle isn't the enemy would serve us well as a country. Our differences are actually quite minor.

To do this, both sides should try and win an argument based on reason and not mindless sterotypes and demonization.

What we need is a Civil War, not within a political party, but an actual separation of the United States in to two separate nations. The cultural and political divides are too great.

The people of the south and the plains states are not represented by the US Government.

It's about 20 hours too soon for these crocodile tears.

Moar race baiting kurmugeon?

There probably be no civil war. Any strains of popular Tea Party-style conservatism that get into Congress will be quickly tamed by the "moderates."

How the GOP copes with its shrinking electorate I'm not sure.

Romney is at 49% in the polls. Wake the **** up, there is NO shrinking electorate.

I think your next minority candidate to win the nomination will be on the GOP side and either a woman or Hispanic/Cuban

Last poll, he was losing Iowa. He needs to be concern with the electorial count. ;)

It will be Rubio unless his debate performance during the primaries mirrors the performance of Rick Perry.

I agree-- if not him then Susan Collins.
