ZEIT-ONLINE-Umfrage: Deutsche beurteilen Obamas Amtszeit positiv | Politik | ZEIT ONLINE

Of course the Germans are not allowed to vote the American President, and most Americans don't care what Europeans think ... but for the sake of curiosity, I thought I'd share this poll with you.

According to the YouGov poll institute, 85% of the Germans would vote for Barack Obama, only 4% for Mitt Romney (11%: Don't know/no comment).

According to this poll, Romney even scored worse than McCain four years ago, who enjoyed the sympathy of 8% of the Germans (compared to 80% for Obama, IIRC).

The YouGov poll also found that 60% of the Germans think Obama's policies in the past four years have been "positive on the bottom line", only 4% believe it was "negative on the bottom line", while 33% say "it was mixed" or "don't know".

I guess that makes Germany an even bluer constituency than Washington DC. ;)

I'm not surprised at all.

If the world were voting, it would be for Obama for the most part. He's pretty popular abroad, except, perhaps, in Pakistan.

Fine, ask him to run for chacellor if Germany. You're welcome to his stupid ass.

Then again, you guys voted for Merkel and now want her out of office because she is pushing for austerity. Romney is the american version of a Merkel with the notion of austerity... so ofc he wouldn't be popular. Obama is a black, tall, thin Santa Claus which is against austerity but for more spending and more government programs.

Out of interest how informed of the candidates are the German people?

I'm in England at the moment & a lot of the public dont really know a lot about Romney. In fact I know a few people who dont even know who he is, so when I see a poll in the UK where Obama trounces Romney I know its got absolutely nothing to do with politics, for the most part & everything to do with picking that "cool black guy who looks a bit like Will Smith, you know, Men in Black, Fresh Prince, everyone used to love that show & everyone still remembers the lyrics to the theme tune & oh yeah we seen clips of Obama dancing & doing one liners on that show with the host with the huge chin so yeah we'd vote for him".

I was just wondering if it was anymore scientific in Germany?

Romney, assuming he follows Ryan's plan (because we got nothing else to base it on as Romney changes positions daily) would be major spending cuts with a boost to military along with major cuts to taxes for the wealthy. That's austerity for some and not for others.

Obama is more moderate tax hikes and moderate spending cuts. Obama's math is more realistic but still not viable.

You have good points. Just one correction: Merkel is still very popular in Germany and would win in a landslide if the Chancellor was directly elected. It's the rest of Europe who doesn't like her.

So I guess austerity is always bad ... unless it's about your money that's spent. ;)

Misery loves company.

I'm guessing you would know best. As an outsider, the news I read about the popularity of madam Merkel is like a rollercoaster, up and down.

So from "through the roof" to having a few % increase in party popularity over the past 3 months.

I'm talking more about perception...

I'm not sure. As far as I can tell, the USA are the one non-German country that gets most coverage in the German mainstream media, certainly much much more than you can see in America about European countries, but that doesn't mean much.

The people in my environment, who are not into online news sources about America, usually know Romney is a Mormon, is very rich, said 47% of the people are lazy welfare leeches and is against tax raises and in favor of cutting social programs. But not much more than that. And these people are probably not very representative of Germans in general.

So I guess this "vote" is probably less based on good arguments, but on general sympathy or antipathy for the kind of culture the candidates represent. While Germans may not agree with the Democrats on everything, they can at least relate to them -- while most Republicans seem to be as culturally alien as people from Mars.

Merkel's approval rate was up to 80% at some point, during her first term 2005-09, when she was governing in a centrist great coalition (imagine Republicans and Democrats form a mixed government to get an idea what that means).

This approval rate slipped quickly after she formed a center-right Christian Democrat/Free Democrat conservative-libertarian coalition, in her second term in 2009, mostly due to the lapses and poor performance of her coalition junior partner, the Free Democrats -- but as far as I remember, it always remained well above 50%.

So yes, she considerably slipped in popularity, but it was rather relative and on a constantly high level.

When the center-left Social Democrats nominated their candidate for Chancellor Peer Steinbrück a few weeks ago, polls showed that in a direct contest, Merkel would beat him 56% to 36%.

I know it is trite...but they also voted for Hitler...so there's that.

Of course the Holocaust Deniers could easily overlook Obama's shortcomings.

And Israel.

Its cool to most people for the leader of the most powerful nation on earth going and bowing down to their leaders and apologizing for the existence of his country. I mean, how cool is that?

Well, I was glad that for a change, an American President would not just show us the finger or tell us to "shut up and do as I say", but actually treat us like Allies (which I always assumed we are).

If that's "bowing down and apologizing for the existence of his country" ... well, let me say that's a rather egocentric view.

I'd love to pick the lawyers for every person I have to oppose in the various lawsuits I handle

Maybe I'm a bit slow on the uptake ... but I don't understand. What are you trying to say?

He's saying the only reason Germans want Obama so that America will be weak, completely ignoring that Germany is better off with a strong America.

But, you know, **** logic.

what I am trying to say is that other countries are in competition with the USA =no wonder they want a clown running our nation

Hm. Still doesn't compute for me ...

Obama does not believe in American primacy-Romney does

Ah ok. Maybe. Or maybe they simply think Obama's policies are in the best interest of all of us.
