I voted early today (and actually voted for one Republican)

It's the first time since 2000 that I've voted for any Republican. If you're familiar with my posts, you know I despise that party. However, I always read up on what the candidates are for and base my votes on that.

In 2008, I voted for every Democrat on my ballot. In some cases a Republican was running unopposed. In those cases, I wrote in a protest vote just to vote against the Republican. In other cases a Republican was running against third party candidates, but no Democrat. In that event, I made sure the 3rd party person wasn't awful and voted for him/her. I did it this way in '08 to have 100 percent opposition to the Republican Party.

However, in this election there was one Republican I had to vote for. It was for the office of Sheriff. He was not opposed by any Democrat, but he was opposed by someone calling himself an "independent conservative." I looked at his web page, and it was just a bunch of angry tirades bashing unions and liberals and promising to bust unions. There was no information about how he intended to perform the job of Sheriff. That job is to enforce the law. It's to protect the citizens. It's not to be hostile toward unions. The Republican candidate, by contrast, posted videos on his site about specifically what he intended to do and why he was qualified to be Sheriff. He opposed domestic violence and gangs. He showed a track record of having worked in law enforcement and having served honorably. He didn't bash his opponent. He made a real case that he could be a good Sheriff while the other guy just screamed and yelled cliches. Plus, the office of Sheriff would have no power to repeal Obamacare, an issue that's important to me. So I voted for this Republican. He earned my vote.
