If Obama was to win next week what would be the future of the GOP? Would they carry on as normal and wait to see how Obama's last term plays out or would they possibly take a different approach? Any other suggestions welcome.

If Obama wins this election, they will win the next election.

It seems to be a pattern that reoccurs quite frequently, no?

thats dooesnt give much credit to the American public though does it? Your suggetsing that America votes in patterns rather than substance and the GOP should just sit tight as they will get back in anyway?

Pretty much. It's not that I think that the American public is stupid or anything, but (1)they aren't really given that much of a choice and (2) the establishment media in this country is so powerful that nobody can really make any informed decisions. That's why we keep electing these jerks over and over again.

I just don't know. Does anyone have the political will to reform our tax code? To cut spending? Elections in two years, don'tcha know. They may take Romney's approach and try to introduce/pass something that will disallow some deductions in the top income brackets, trying to keep the tax rate the same for the upper brackets and keep inheritance taxes at $5 million, or, at worst, $3 million.

I think they're going to try to look like reformers, but I don't know that they can pull it off. But perhaps they'll look enough like reformers that in two years, after the elections, they can actually get something done.

I'm actually more concerned about what a President Obama will do with his power of Executive Orders, frankly.

But if Obama is as bad as you think dont you think that should be a wake up call to the GOP if they do end up losing? Lets be honest Obama has been there for the taking and its still a strong possibility that he will still win, that shows a massive weakness of leadership of the GOP in my opinion.

so you would be more in favour of a 3 party system?

Absolutely. I feel like if a third party gets enough support, they should at the very least be allowed to debate. Jill Stein, who is running for President on the Green Party ticket, is on 85% of the ballot, yet was not allowed to debate in the elections and the only time she ever gets air time is idiot news anchors mocking her for whatever reason.

They will scream election fraud, then oppose anything that Obama tries to do. They will come up with a fiscally conservative platform, then ignore it if and when they get back into power.

In short, politics as usual.

Mostly because Americans haven't quite figured out yet that the people that keep ass-****ing us are the 2 major parties. So they keep electing the same clowns and wonder why nothing changes.

I think most people know this, but instead of getting angry they kinda just shrug their shoulders and play video games or something. . .

They will either become much more moderate or become more radical... Time will tell.

My time in the US is coming to a close but in my short time here I have come to the conclusion that America is crying out for a third party, so many of my friends hate both parties and seem frustrated that they only have 2 choices. Of course it will never happen but I think it would be amazing for American politics to have a strong 3rd party!

I assume they'll pretty much carry on as normal. They'll probably take back the Senate in 2014, and we'll end up with Congress controlled by one party, the Presidency by another and precious little will actually get done.

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, is it?

I hate to say it, but your probably right about the fact that we will never have a strong third party. It is unfortunate because I think that would be the only way we can have reasonable reform in this country.

I'd say doing nothing at all right now is a bad thing. Not that there aren't worse things that could be done by doing something.

I wouldn't expect it to happen in any given election or even in my lifetime, but I expect that someday a strong third party will emerge.

I think it shows one thing: a very effective campaign focused, not on Obama's record, not on his future plans, but on denigrating the Republican nominee. If I'm not mistaken (?) didn't Republicans do extremely well in the 2010 elections? I think they did. What's changed?

My guess will be that they will still advance an agenda by loading up so much conservative stuff into everything that lands on the President's desk that they will get quite a few things that they want because they can outlast Obama by giving the bills Sugar & Spice names. The economy will worsen so the GOP will pick up the senate and seats in the House in the mid-terms, but I would expect the Old Guard guys like the Speaker will marginalize the Cantors of the House. Conversely if Romney wins, the economy still worsens and the dems will take the House in the mid-terms. Romney is not the leader, heart or soul of the party by any stretch of the imagination. Serious power brokers do not challenge sitting Presidents--it is usually a fool's errand--so you will see a well funded well supported GOP nominee in 2016 if Romney loses.

I think they will be less obstructive than they have been the last four years, although it wouldn't take much effort to make that prediction come true. One would hope that by now they've gotten the message that the American people really really want the politicians to work together to solve problems. One woud also hope that they've gotten the message that ultra-strident Tea Party members aren't doing them any favors in the big scheme of things. They will have cost the Republicans a majority in the Senate not once but twice in the last two elections, and they will have failed to help them oust Obama. To some extent the party rallied around the "crush Obama" flag, but I don't think that there will as much enthusiasm for thumbing their noses at him for the next four years as he heads into mandatory retirment.

I would guess the number of voters that actually vote but im not sure on the numbers to be certain?
