Sandy leaves election officials scrambling - CNN.com
....

Many electronic voting machines -- used now by two out of every five counties nationwide, according to the Voting Technology Project -- often require consistent power to work for the long hours they are needed on Election Day, even though some have battery power.

If electricity remains out in some areas next Tuesday, those areas may have to scramble to find alternatives, including paper ballots.

It is unlikely voters in the hardest hit states will be given an extension if they cannot access polls, despite damage from the storm.

Only Congress can change Election Day, according to an 1845 law. If it opts to alter the timetable -- something never previously done -- every state would have to be included.

The same law also says that if a state "shall fail to make a choice" on Election Day, then electors to the Electoral College may be appointed on a "subsequent day" as determined by state law.

Seems like they should be able to provide generators.

I doubt it matters too much. Unless of course Conservatives truly are more resourceful than helpless liberals and they'll make it to the ballots more, lol.

If democratic and storm damaged eastern PA does not turn out and the western pro-coal part of the state has decent turnout, it might make winning Ohio moot.

It is not like this is katrina. It seems like they won't have to wait a week for help. priority does tend to go to establishing state government centers first because they provide organization and assistance. Those are also the main voting places.

As someone from WEST pa i can tell you that its very democrat

anyway on to a general responses, powering up the voting machines or building they will be in is only one part of the issue, the other issues is transportation to get there, communicating if the place is relocated etc etc

all more important than the actual voting machines

They mentioned this on the jennifer Granholm last night. It sounds like a real mess. My question is could these people not be bused to another more intact location to vote. Say, everyone who shows up shows some type of ID. They get on the bus and are taken to another voting place. Their ID is checked again and they vote. Those that don't have ID are allowed to vote in place.

I don't think the Constitution says anything about where you have to vote. But something has to be done.

The dead show up despite the weather and don't need voting machines to work, and they vote dem.

not a bad idea at all but again, how would you even get that message to some and how to organize it. Sad events.

From my northeast customers I've spoken with, the extent of damage and outages isn't as great as it's made out to be. Voting shouldn't be an issue.

But if Romney wins, it'll be the new "hanging chad".

Who waited a week for help?

Getting it out is not a real problem. Tv, radio, internet, loud speaker, mail whatever. Your other question is the real one.

And the same would probably be true if Obama wins EC and Romney wins PV

it is a problem if there is still no power and streets, house and mailboxes are underwater. Now that shouldn't be a problem by tuesday but it slows everything down.

Last night I heard that the National Guard is setting up makeshift voting stations to help in the crisis. I wonder if Christie or Obama ordered that. Either way I think it is a good idea.

It is doubtful that any disturbance in the election will have an effect on the outcome of the election, unless Romney wins the popular vote and Obama the electoral.

At that point the left will tell us that Obama would have won both, if not for the storm, and so they aren't -really- being hypocritical when they suddenly back the EC over the PV.

Most of NJ won't be back with power until at least Wednesday, and that doesn't include the hardest hit areas of Ocean & Monmouth Counties.

pray for my beautiful state.. the USA took a hit.. NJ has been hit hard.. we will have no power for weeks.. everything is destroyed..

Funny you pray to the same guy who caused the Hurricane and could've stopped it.

Obama controls the CIA and they control the weather so I am unsure why so many poor people would vote for him since he is in cahoots with the CIA to destroy them. Just sayin......Vote Romney. He doesn't kill poor people.

"stupid" is a nice word compared to the ones I think of when reading leftist posts :)

So explain your post. If you can Logically and objectively that is to say rationally

I cannot rationally explain humor to someone who cannot recognize a tongue in cheek post as humor is seldom logical or objective, and definitely never both at the same time.
