I am going to quote a letter from a site I have a membership in due to wanting to recall my state's governor. This is not about the recall but about Mitt Romney and it is not the full letter as it is somewhat a letter campaign ad--just the parts that are of interest:
"Dear Wisconsin MoveOn member,
Earlier this week Richard Mourdock, Republican candidate for Senate in Indiana, publicly said pregnancy from rape is a "gift from God."1
So what did Mitt Romney, who is actively campaigning for him, do? He doubled down on his support for Mourdock, and refused to apologize.2"
"Only one Senate candidate has Mitt Romney starring in their TV ads: Richard Mourdock.4 His statement is so disgusting and offensive that even other Republicans are calling for an immediate apology.5
But not Mitt Romney. He's standing by Mourdock and the ads are still running.6"

I know that the "pregnancy from rape is a gift from God" is common statement of extreme Christians--I believe fundamentalists, but still why would Mitt even allow this to represent him as the statement is offensive to a lot of female voters and probably some male ones as well. I actually believe the view Mitt had a couple weeks back that abortion should not be allowed except in cases of rape/incest or life endangerment because of my view the other forms are just wasting a life. Well if you wonder why I believe that--remember my view is only slightly liberal, I also side with Obama on helping the poor and believe if we don't help them we are also not very pro-life.
I suppose the point is that with all the desperation to get in, it seems Mitt just lets whatever get by as his beliefs. That's why elections are so difficult now for moderates and people close to the middle. You believe in something and you would really like to vote that way, but you realize that if you do you will be compromising other values you believe in. My personal values are leaning me toward Obama because I believe in more of his values than Mitt's. That seems to be the choice for people like me, since there seems to only always be a choice between two candidates to vote for as no one else will stand a chance to get in.
