Assuming that the solidly red states will stay red and the solidly blue states will stay blue, and focusing on the toss up battleground states:

It is conceivable that if the vote goes a certain way,Romney and Obama could tie with 269 electoral college votes each.

If that should happen, the House will choose the President. The Senate will choose the Vice President.

We could see a Romney/Biden Presidency.

What do you think? Good thing? Bad thing? An end to partisan bickering? Disaster?

beats the options we face now I s'pose

Do you think so? How much could Romney trust Biden to stand in for Romney at executive functions? To honestly represent the President's position when it is left to the Vice President to do that? And given that Biden has spent many months now trashing Romney and Romney's plans/policies/positions, if Biden should reverse 180 and support Romney, would either GOP or Democrats respect that?

Boy, that sounds wrong. The presidential candidates pick their running mates. We vote for the pair. If it's a tie, why wouldn't the US House of Representatives pick the president and, automatically, his vice-presidential pick become the Vice President? Sounds wrong. But, it won't happen anyway.

The Electoral College is not mandated to cast their votes the way their state votes anyway, so I'd say some state would break ranks and avoid that possibility.

Do you really think they'd choose Biden?

Why does Biden have to get in line w/ Romney?

Iirc, we used to elections thisaway. It's how our Founding Fathers liked it.

United States presidential election - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Under the original system established by Article Two, electors could cast two votes to two different candidates for president. The candidate with the highest number of votes (provided it was a majority of the electoral votes) became the president, and the second-place candidate became the vice president.

I think it sounds like a bunch of stuff...

I thought this possibility was more likely early on in the election...

Right now there are 206 electoral votes leaning Romney, and it looks like he will win FL, NC, and VA... which he is close in OH, CO, IA, and NH... all states that are close to tied and have trending Romney...

Also, these polls count likely voters... The late breaking undecided voters havent been counted, and they traditionally have gone 80% to 20% in favor of the challenger in every election... If that's the case.. it would create a landslide in Romney's favor... much like Reagan Carter...

From the 12th Amendment:

The person having the greatest number of votes as Vice-President, shall be the Vice-President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed, and if no person have a majority, then from the two highest numbers on the list, the Senate shall choose the Vice-President; a quorum for the purpose shall consist of two-thirds of the whole number of Senators, and a majority of the whole number shall be necessary to a choice. But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.

A further commentary:

What happens if no presidential candidate gets 270 Electoral votes?

If no candidate receives a majority of Electoral votes, the House of Representatives elects the President from the 3 Presidential candidates who received the most Electoral votes. Each state delegation has one vote. The Senate would elect the Vice President from the 2 Vice Presidential candidates with the most Electoral votes. Each Senator would cast one vote for Vice President. If the House of Representatives fails to elect a President by Inauguration Day, the Vice-President Elect serves as acting President until the deadlock is resolved in the House.

I think they'd likely choose Obama as VP over Biden.

They could, but Biden is the tie-breaker in the Senate and I can't imagine him not voting for himself.

I hope you're right as I am a Romney supporter. But the election will most likely be determined in the battleground states and neither candidate has a strong lead in any one of them just 12 days out from the election. So however unlikely a numerical tie in the electoral college might be, it is not at all impossible and, if it happens, it will be the most interesting election since the Congress had to choose the President when Adams and Jackson were candidates.

That would be reaL interesting. Fun to watch too.

The rules say they have to choose between the top two vote getters of those running for Vice President. Obama is not running for vice president and therefore would not be eligible to be chosen for any office other than President.

Just assumed he was the Dem VP so they would go that way. No real reason I suppose.

The only other choice they will have would be Ryan. Would a Democratic majority in the Senate choose him?

No but someoned said Obama. i have no idea if thats even possible.

if it goes to the House and senate anything can happen as moderates/centrists screwed by their party in the past or who want to jump the seniority line to cushy committees or positions might put their vote up for sale to the highest bidder.

I would totally vote for a romney/biden presidency. Best of both campaigns I think.

I'd be ok with that. You'd get two political veterans in office with fairly sensible opinions from both parties - what's not to like?

Wouldn't it be the new Congress after the election that would do these votes? So if the Republicans become the majority in the Senate and retain their majority in the House, then it would be Romney/Ryan.

The new Congress, but the sitting VP--Biden still breaks ties.
