Byrd is dead and part of a bygone era. He's also an atypical example, so I don't see the point of bringing him into a discussion of the current Democrat Party and its problems.

Some Democrats were and are racist. Some Republicans were and are racist. They are almost all hypocrites. We're not well served by denying that, but some partisans are so far beyond help that they automatically assign anything they don't like to the other side.

I admit to playing words games here because I'm making a point. Here is my point. The Democrat mantra is "republicans are racist" or something to that effect, while the Democrats had a former KKK Grand Kleagle occupying a US Senate seat until 2009.

Yes, and historically up until the 60's, the Democrats were often more conservative than the Republicans. When the Republican party was formed in the 1850s, their whole idea was to disturb the existing societal norm of slavery. The Republican party (ironically) were the trust busters of the 1900s. When Teddy Roosevelt ran again in 1912, the party he and other Republicans formed was the Progressive Party. If you read their platform, it would make Republicans of today blush - a National Health Service, an inheritance tax - in fact many of their proposed reforms actually became law.

And the rest of the Democratic Party is not responsible for the choices of West Virginians, so I still don't see the point.

The Democrat party has a history of racism, not the repubican party. The Democrat party is the party of race. The entire nation has seen this President use race for political purposes.

Stop beating around the bush - What you are afraid to say is that the DEM party has pandered to blacks for enough generations that they have created a plantation that grows DEM votes to harvest any time they need them.

Therefore you take this calamity the DEMs have created for the black community and try to cast it as a negative on ROMNEY because blacks do not attend his campaign rallies.

Blacks vote DEM with 90% certitude and it is based on ignorance, greed, irresponsibility, and their own form of racism. This is a sad commentary on a whole demographic that has been created by DEMOCRAT policies over the last fifty years.

Of COURSE blacks don't attend Romney rallies - they don't attend OBAMA rallies either in any significant degree unless Obama goes to where THEY are.

But take great pride in you subjugation of a vulnerable part of American society - keep them undereducated, in poverty, suffering under the fallacy that it is all the fault of rich-white-republicans. Take that as your badge of dishonor.

Romney only appeals to people - of any demographic - who are interested in the success of AMERICA. There are plenty of women, hispanics, even blacks who share that desire for a better AMERICA rather than enlarging the welfare base, reducing our prosperity, coddling Islamist terrorists, and exacerbating the racial divide.

Proud to be a conservative who wants more of what once made America the greatest nation in the history of earth. And that would be responsible citizenship, productive individuals, freedom of expression, capitalistic economy, strong defense, and a desire to right wrongs where ever they are found. That is my America. You want less of all that.

When people use the word 'racist' these days they should be compelled to say what they mean by racism.

DEMs point to racism as the cause of any disparity between the life situations of blacks vs white. If a black is poorer, it is because of their definition of "racism." If more blacks commit crimes, it is because of their silly notion of 'racism.' When DEMs hear of some atrocious act, they first thing they think about is 'was the victim black?' If not, they have little interest in the atrocity - however heinous it may be.

GOP uses 'racism' to point to instances of actually treating people of color in a humiliating, depraved, unfavorable, or disparaging way. GOP wants to treat all people by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. Opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, color, or religion.

So - the word 'racism' has no meaning whatsoever without spelling out the grounds for which it is alleged.

The fact stands that under the normal sense of the word, it is the DEM party that treats blacks as servants, useful only for the dirty work of electing more rich white DEMOCRATs.

The GOP appeals to the better instincts of humanity - whether they be black or white. The GOP is more likely to have blacks in REAL positions of responsibility than are the DEMs. The only black with real authority in the Obama's administration is Eric Holder, and he completely fits the stereotype of 'stepnfetchit' - he is there to run legal interference for the Obama agenda. Holder is not interested in "justice for all" - he is hell bent on using the powers of prosecution to intimidate opponents of Obama's agenda. He will bend any law, overlook any statute, interpret any data set in a way to be beneficial to Obama's re-election effort. He is the worst POS to ever hold the office - and that includes Nixon's admin.

The GOP never rejects a black person who wants to work with them. And the party never accuses the DEMs of racism when the DEM policies are clearly based on assuming the worst stereotypes for blacks.

However, God help a BLACK who breaks free of the DEM plantation. The DEMs heap every racist insult known to mankind against any blacks who dare to show their conservative politics.

One positive thing about Obama's administration is the racist corruption being exposed in the left's political discourse. Now every American has seen for themselves the racist corrupt soul of the democrat party. Chris Matthews is the poster boy.

This is so full of **** I can't even read it. When there is actual racism on the right, the excuses come flying like rain. When Rush sings "Barack the Magic Negro," it's excuses and more excuses.

I made zero excuses for Byrd, but I object to such painting with a broad brush. All I have to do is say "Republicans used to be more progressive than Democrats" and watch the Bull**** fly!
