BBC poll: Rest of world favours Obama

This.

The Eastern front was a pure hell for the Russians and far more bloody and brutal than anything that happened on the Western front. But it was, as you rightly say, a joint effort. Of course I may be biased, but were it not for the fact that Britain stood alone, totally alone, from the Dunkirk evacuations in May 1940 until the Germans broke the Nazi-Soviet pact in June 1941, and soaked up the air-raids and dissuaded the invasion, there would have been no Western front. had Sea-lion succeeded, the US would have had no base from which to lead any invasion.

Everything worked together and it's pretty insulting to the memories of every person who made a sacrifice in that struggle to suggest that one part of the effort was the crucial one. They all were. I've completely stopped reacting to those "If it weren't for the US you'd all be speaking German" insults. They're too ignorant and intentionally insulting to give head space to.

Back to the topic, no one in the US should pay any attention whatsoever to who foreigners want to win. It signifies nothing except who comes across better via the media. We don't live with the consequences of the POTUS's domestic policies and frankly, I don't ever see much contrast between the foreign policies of US presidents whatever party they belong to. That most foreigners prefer Obama really only tells you that the mainstream of global political sympathies lie somewhere slightly to the left of the US mainstream, but I guess y'all knew that already, didn't you?

Absolutely great post well put.

not all americans are that way. that kind of generalization is always wrong. But I guess you are OK with the Mexican flag being flown over schools in the USA.

Flags should have no place in schools; they're not battlefields and they're not seats of government.

Yes... the French are arrogant. In fact the Europeans are pretty much so and for no reason. The Dutch are the best of the lot. The old folks really have respect for what was done to beat Hitler, and assistance to restore Europe.

The majority of Euros have political penis envy. They just cannot figure out or stand how a bunch of hayseeds have created such a great, prosperous country, and became the superpower. They despise that a bunch of third rate locals left their shores and created it all. Though it is right in front of their eyes they fail to see the power of freedom. Unfortunately we copied a lot of their idiocy... but we have a foundation they don't. THE MAJORITY OF OUR POPULATION ARE NOT SHEEP WHO LOOK TO GOVERNMENT... theirs is. The majority of the Euros are hooked on government... we're not... not yet.

Theirs is also a continent polluted with the poison called envy.

When Romney wins... they will not understand it. They won't. They will be shocked. Because they're ignorant about America.

Obviously you know nothing about Europe. They know more about our politics than most of us do and they know more about our way of live than we know of theirs. Thier news is better and more inclusive than ours and covers ther entire spectrum. No one in Europe has penis envy. They wouldn't want to, thats how well they understand the US

LOL... I've lived over half my life in Europe... in two Scandinavian countries, north and south Germany which puts me in close range of numerous border countries, Spain for a short stint and a couple countries in the former Communist East (after the Wall came down). I'm a global nomad.

I've been to most EU nations, except Greece, Portugal and several former Commi-slave states.

Smoke that Bub.

I know Europe as well as I know the US and Canada (having lived there for a handful of years too).

So what was it you wanted to tell me that I don't know about Europeans? They're ignorant and their news services are worse than MSNBC.

America is arrogant, as a whole. That's not opinion, it's fact. We go it alone. We think we're #1 in pretty much everything. We're woefully ignorant of international affairs. We say things like "If not for us, they'd be speaking German right now" while being clueless about the Eastern front.

We're arrogant. They COULD like Obama because he's so arrogant that he feels perfectly comfortable in admitting it. :2razz:

Going it alone isn't arrogant. And when did we do this Tucker???

We are #1 in pretty much everything meaningful for a long time even with our inefficiencies. Why... the freedom our system once provided. It's no wonder foreigners are 4-times more likely to become millionaires than native born Americans. They see oceans of opportunity... It's why people... when given the choice come here.

If the Russians and Germans had maintained their pact, we would have had a tougher haul, but make NO mistake... WE... our grandparents would have got it done. Hell, the Finns mowed so many Russians down they all but gave up. The Finns settled, lost part of Karelia, but they laid waste to the Russians. Kiitos Isoisä.

If it wasn't for us... Europe would be different. We didn't do it alone, we funded their resurrection, and we laid the framework for the EU. We did something similar in Japan.

We are the shining beacon... even in dark moments (no pun intended) like the last four years.

you don't think public schools should have a flagpole out front with an american flag on it? how about post offices? state capitals? the US capital? US ships? US planes? Should the national anthem be played or sung at storting events?

just trying to calibrate you.

Post offices? Is it a federal building? Genuine question, I've no idea if the USPO is still in public hands.

State capitols? Sure, alongside the state's flag.
US Capitol? Of course, it's the seat of Congress.
US ships? Yes, to identify them. Same with planes.

I don't know what a 'storting event' is. Sorry.

They love a weak president who goes around the world apologgizing to the Arab and Muslim world? That won't happen under President Romney.

This lie has been busted over and over. It doesn't become true just because you keep repeating it. In fact, the independent fact checker, Politifact, gave it their worst rating, that of pants on fire.

[excerpts]
The notion that President Barack Obama started his presidency with an "apology tour" is a persistent and false Republican talking point that we have debunked a number of times.

Mitt Romney is sticking to it. ...

• John Murphy, a communications professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, studies presidential rhetoric and political language. He said Obama used conciliatory language for diplomatic purposes, not apologizing.

"It's much more a sense of establishing of reciprocity," Murphy said. "Each side says, okay, we haven't done great, but we have a new president and we're going to make a fresh start and move forward. I don't think that's an apology."

• Lauren Bloom, an attorney and business consultant, wrote the book, The Art of the Apology, advising businesses and individuals on when to apologize and how to do it.

She said Obama's words fell short of an apology, mostly because he didn't use the words "sorry" or "regret." "I think to make an effective apology, the words 'I'm sorry' or 'we're sorry' always have to be there," Bloom said.

Obama's remarks were really non-apologies, and they're not good in business or personal relationships, Bloom said. The one area where they can be useful: international diplomacy. ...

Our ruling

Once again, Romney has accused Obama of beginning his presidency "with an apology tour."

Our reviews of Obama’s 2009 foreign travels and speeches showed no such thing. While he criticized past U.S. actions, such as torture practices at Guantanamo, he did not offer one apology.

It’s ridiculous to call Obama’s foreign visits and remarks "an apology tour." We rate this statement Pants on Fire!

and what will the far righties say about this:

The world likes Obama because he's weak.

Nah we like him because he's better for the world in general.

you had it right in your first line. our competitors and enemies want america to be led by a weak president. If you don't understand why, well, its not worth trying to educate you.

holy ****, I made a typo and got caught. sporting events, national anthem--yes or no?

I understand that you are easily propagandized and brainwashed by liberal fact checkers but the question begs to be asked

Have you read Obama's Cairo speech?

You can't counter with yet another lie. Politifact is an independent fact checker. It's not a liberal organization. It fact checks everyone, regardless of political lean. It's been more than willing to bust Obama when he gets his facts wrong.

There is a lot of things only you guys understand.

Did Obama kill Bin Laden ? What about his speech on that great day ? kind of weakness.

Oh, 'sporting event'. My bad. No, I don't think it's appropriate unless it's an international.

So you don't want the national anthem at a high school football between two teams in Texas--or any other state? Is that what you are saying?

If yes, please explain why you are offended by our national anthem?

actually the seals killed OBL, all obama did was reluctantly give the OK. and then afterwards prance around like a horny rooster claiming that HE did it.

Obama got Osama. That is a fact, live with it. He is your president too, ya know. how can you guys want to blame him for Bengazi yet...nevermind, that alternate reality thing, I forgot for a second.

Obama should run for office in France.

I guess the governing meme of this thread is "Foreigners Bad, Americans Good". Especially the french, who are the bete noire of the American Right, which fears an educated engaged citizenry that doesn't put up with plutocracy more than anything). It's a staple conservative fetish.

I give him credit for giving the OK to take OBL. But thats all he did, give the OK. The intel the found him was the result of things the Bush put in place.

You say that, and in the next breath support obama------------you are a walking contradiction. you cannot be against plutocracy and be for obama.

The rightwing noise machine tells me he's a marxist. So now he's a plutocrat. Totally fact free -- that's the realm of conservative rhetoric.

plutocracy and marxism are totally compatible because in both cases a very small group of super elites control all of the money and all of the power. Marxism is socialist plutocracy.

Its amazing to me that anyone living in the USA would want more of what obama is selling, huge oppressive government, loss of freedoms, fines for not buying something, curly toxic light bulbs made in china, skyrocketing energy prices, inflation, weakness in foreign affairs, and punishment for anyone who openly opposes the regime.

We are at a crossroads in this country. another obama term will doom us to economic mediocrity and cultural poverty.
