The mother of an American diplomat killed during a terrorist raid on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi has hit out at Barack Obama for describing the attack as 'not optimal', saying: 'My son is not very optimal - he is also very dead.'

During an interview shown on Comedy Central, Obama responded to a question about his administration's confused communication after the assault by saying: 'If four Americans get killed, it’s not optimal.'
Speaking exclusively to MailOnline today, Pat Smith, whose son Sean died in the raid, said: 'It was a disrespectful thing to say and I don't think it's right.

'How can you say somebody being killed is not very optimal? I don't think the President has the right idea of the English language.'

I don't get the problem, having our diplomats killed is not an optimal situation. It's not a good thing, and that is what he was saying. I don't see how you can logically get mad at that.

It is tragic, and it is not a good thing that it happened. I don't see how you can be angry with somebody for saying that. It's just your ridiculous partisanship that is making feel up in arms over this.

I may be wrong but I believe the statement was that the administrations reaction to the attack hasn't been optimal, not that the attack itself wasn't optimal.

The SECURITY was not optimal. That doesn't make it bad or non-existent. The world is a dangerous place, and resources are limited. There WILL be attacks, and Americans WILL be killed.

Understand that if Romney gets elected, you'll actually have to do more than just deride some out of context statement by Obama. You'll actually be responsible for governing. Do you really want to be held to a standard of any attacks on Americans anywhere means a complete failure.

Jon Stewart asked if it was an optimal situation(paraphrasing here) and Obama said it wasn't. How in the world can you be upset about this? That's the obvious thing a President should say. The only reason is because of your hyper-partisanship, period.

And there is no way Obama will be impeached for this, that is just ridiculous thinking.

Also note I don't blame the mother for being upset about this, she is grieving, and is looking for someone to blame, that is fine, and my thoughts and prayers go out to her.

its shows Obamas disconnect and lack of real empathy...as its not in his heart.. only the election.. a real man would have said to Stewart " look Jon, with all due respect, this is not a topic for a comedy show, and my heart is with the famlies of those who lost loved ones".... but when its Obama , its all about scoring points, looking cool and snappy...

But that sort of class is not what defines Obama... Obama defeated Obama... give em enough rope and step back.. he will destroy himself...maybe Obama was thinking Candy Obama would chime and save him... who knows.. Obama is a dope..

As to the topic, I get the mothers grief. That said, if the statement was made in regards to their reaction to it I don't really have much outrage. Would I use those wordings? No. But that's pretty much standard political speak for "We ****ed up". No politician generally is going to come out and go "We ****ed up". I can see why people would be upset if he described such a horrible situation in such academic sounding language of "not optimal", but not as much if it's about how his administration handled the aftermath.

Doesn't mean I would be against Romney or someone taking him to task for minimizing how poor their response has been, but again that's just kind of standard politics. Maybe I'm jaded...but politicians being politicians don't usually get me riled up. And depsite the BS Obama peddled in 08, he's just a standard politician.

If you watch the Daily Show interview, Jon Stewart was talking with Obama about the line of intelligence communication and said, "I would say you would even admit that it was not the optimal response, at least to the American people, as far as us all being on the same page".

Obama responded directly to that by saying, "Here's what I would say. If four Americans get killed, it's not optimal, and we're going to fix it."

The video in the link conveniently leaves out Jon Stewart's comments right before that. In addition, early on in the interview, Obama had called what happened in Libya "tragic".

Context, context, context.

Thousands of Americans die each year from lack of health coverage, poverty, etc and for the most part the conservative stance on this is "not my problem". Yet when four Americans die doing a dangerous job suddenly conservatives are the most compassionate people in the world, they are devastated, they are so utterly distraught over these fallen patriots. The president said they ****ed up in so many words, is that not good enough for you? You want him to do some sob speech where he begs for forgiveness? His wording was poor but I don't see it as some kind of heinous act. If I were Sean's mother I'd be upset too, probably no matter what he said.
