That's the only way I can explain his lame, befuddled effort to run to Obama's left on education spending. My libertarian friend just choked up his beer.

is Romney's plan to give full scholarships to those who graduate in the top quarter of their class? if so, that's quite a surprise.

It's way to Obama's left, to the point of fiscal irresponsibility. We have no resources to support such a liberal plan.

No that's not what he said. He said that in MA. kids were given scholarships who graduated in the top quarter of their class.

That's absolutely irresponsible. A nationwide plan like that would sink community college budgets to the bottom of the red.

He didn't say he wanted a nationwide plan for that. That was not what he said his plan was at all. He basically gave those colleges a pat on the back for offering that type of scholarships. Many scholarships are privately funded as the one that my son goes to college on right now. Funded by businesses in the area.

No, I beg to differ. Romney definitely endorsed a baseline grant program during the opening question. Anything approaching that is irresponsible to the extreme. For his sake, I hope he's lying.

I definitely think you misunderstood him. That is not what I heard him say or thought he meant at all.

I think states should give massive tuition cuts/grants/scholarships to people who do community college for 2 years first. It would save them a fortune and force 4 years to reign in their costs.

I'm sitting in a room with three other Friedman Raiders. We're attuned to promises of socialistic spending programmes, especially when, as with Romney's Pell pledge, the promise starts with "this is what I want to do". I think you're hearing what you want to hear.

That's a bit more reasonable than a baseline guarantee to hand out grants on the basis of a quota, though.
