The Mitt Romney campaign has filed a federal lawsuit in Wisconsin seeking a five-day extension for absentee voters overseas and in the military.

The campaign for the Republican presidential candidate is concerned about 44 ballots that the state’s Government Accountability Board says were sent out by local election officials after the Sept. 22 deadline. Under federal election law, all ballots are to be returned by Nov. 9 (three days after the general election); the Romney campaign wants that deadline pushed back to Nov. 14 for overseas absentee ballots.

Ahead of Friday's action in Wisconsin, the Romney campaign had filed similar complaints with state election officials in Michigan, Mississippi, and Vermont – indications of just how closely presidential campaign officials are monitoring states' compliance with election law in an effort to ensure that their own candidate is not shortchanged in the 2012 vote count in a whisker-close race.

To expedite the process, the state received a $1.9 million grant from the US Department of Defense’s Federal Voting Assistance Program this year to develop My Vote WI (myvote.wi.gov), an online ballot delivery system that allows US citizens voting from overseas to print their ballots immediately and return them by mail to be counted.

A phone call seeking comment from the Government Accountability Board was not returned by deadline.....snip~

Both sides are all up on the Absentee Ballot Voting! Now who was it that was trying to affect the Military and Voting?

As I understand it, the argument is that federal election law requires a minimum of 45 days for a return deadline from when the ballots are sent out. Thus, if the deadline is Nov 9, then the ballots must be sent out by Sep 22. Because these ballots were sent out later than Sep 22, then it requires an extension of the deadline, because a cutoff of Nov 9 won't give the required number of days.

Seems to me there's an equally valid argument for disqualifying the ballots. But I doubt anyone wants to do that.

I would have to agree with you there Harshaw. Althought I would say it was forced since they were suppose to make sure that our Troopers could vote online and get their votes in faster. Kinda like same day service. Plus both sides are watching out for the Voter fraud.

So they are worried that 44 ballots won't get in but want to try and keep as many people as possible from voting in other states. Yet another place Romney takes both sides of the issue.

Of course, I have to take the same issue with these ballots as I did with the voter ID laws way back when they first started. Was it a secret to these military people the election was coming? This isn't WW2 or vietnam. this isn't even the first war in the gulf. The military people have laptops and computers that we spent millions for. They have high speed networks and a sitwe where you can print out your absentee ballot and mail it in. I could understand a dirt poor person who has no transportation and doesn't have the couple of dollars for a non-driver ID having some trouble. Still, They would have had months to get an ID for an election they knew was coming. Why couldn't these military guys get their ballots in as soon as possible? Every military person I know has been advised to get their butts in gear and get ther needed ballots ASAP. What was the problem? What is the problem with them printing out a ballot right now and mailing it in? They have a month to do this. Is the military out of paper for their printers? Can't we get some guy to go to staples for them and pick up a few boxes of paper and some toner and air mail it to them?

Not that I want to keep those 44 guys from voting because we all know those 44 votes in wisconsin could actually mean something if mittens sweeps all the other battleground states, but give me a break. At least tell me their CO is going to have them doing a few hundred push ups for being such a bunch of procrastinating liollygaggers. Now we all get to pay extra money in court costs and other bull**** because these 44 twits can't seem to get their ass in gear and request an absentee ballot. Where is the drill sergeant from full metal jacket when you need him? They should nickname all these guys gomer pile and use them as landmine finders and other cannon fodder.

Thank you stupid military guys for helping us save money by jerkin off while you should have been on top of things. you are a danger to your squad and everyone else around you. May your death be long and painful, and may it not include any of the other responsible soldiers who can do what they are told in a timely and efficient manner. Oh, and yeah let us get these schmucks some ballots ASAP because we wouldn't want the tards to not cast their vote.

You have a real problem, and I feel very sorry for you.

If these were poor oppressed Pennsylvanians who cannot come up with a birth certificate or an ID after a year of being told they would need it, I suspect My Little Pony would have tears in her eyes for them.

Funny, yet I am almost positive they stuffed the ballot boxes in Southern Wisconsin at the recall election. Romney's friend Walker still isn't doing so hot in job creation and he passed legislation knocking down equal pay for women plus doesn't want disabled people to be able to sue a person who fires them. I would say what Walker does may be a preview of what Romney would do in office...
