As has been stated in several other threads the President seemed preoccupied. Consider:

Bob Woodward stated:
Something happened, perhaps in his personal life, to distract President Obama before last night's debate!
BOB WOODWARD: SOMETHING HAPPENED, PERHAPS IN HIS PERSONAL LIFE, TO DISTRACT PRESIDENT OBAMA BEFORE LAST NIGHT'S DEBATE! - Bob Woodward - Fox Nation

Or this:

"That was not the Barack Obama I’ve seen through the years. I’m thinking the man might have had the flu or something."

There just might be something to this:

Was Obama rattled by developing donor scandal story?

This seems much more plausable than 'he was just off his game'...thoughts?

Reagan was whooped by Carter his first time out seemed completely baffled. Either he was not preped write or he just was pre occupied

Bush was the same way with Clinton. Totally lost in a fog.

Reagan recovered, Bush did not.

I don't remember the Gore/Bush debate but I am willing to bet that Gore kicked butt in the first one (and all the rest too)

So Presidents getting blind sided or "off their game is not new the point now is to recover and drive the message home without getting caught in a fishing net.

The donor "scandal" was brought up during 2008 and nobody ever paid attention. I think one of the ABC news shows actually made donations using prepaid credit cards to show how it was being done.

I remember them all, well. Neither Carter nor Bush I came into the debate with the confidence of the 'talking heads' or the true ability to orate that the President has. Remember the President is said to be the smartest, most elloquent person so far to hold the office. BHO was MUCH more accomplished during his '08 debates and has never shown any 'aloof' tendencies in the past. IMO, last night was just so much out of character to be 'off his game'.

Gore lost the first debate with Bush II due to his annoying sighing. Kerry DID beat Bush II in their first debate but GWB was a neophyte with the English language at best much less an accomplished debater…

It was and yeah nobody ever paid attention...who would have? Holder? REALLY? not...

But considering in this cycle the smallest flaw has been sensationalized so much that if true (or not) it could gain traction given the closeness of the hour.

I guess some people will search for anything to not admit that Romney beat him... sure sure it was because Obama heard a dog whistle from 3 states away...

I don't think there any evidence that it was some huge whole by which people were beating the limits with prepaid cards as it was a criticism that Obama's campaign did not have safeguards against its potential abuse the way McCain did.

The reason was that Obama is an moron radical that got destroyed by a smart man...

Im sure fans that tuned in for an episode of "Obamaprompter 90210" were confused by what happened to Erkle Obama as he may need time in rehab for the collapsed lung from the altitude and to break up with Kelly who is going back to Dylan anyway.. : )

the comments on the doner issue link to the washington examiner in the OP are awesome

Why is there this perception that Obama, "performed poorly"? I saw the same Obama, spewing the same talking points that I've been seeing for three-and-a-half years, now.

Part of the bereavement process... give them time... hopefully they'll come around... if not there's gonna be some massive therapy being handed out on Nov 6th...

I disagree with your comment about Carter. he smoked Reagan if you remember Reagan had the "deer in the headlights look soon in the debate,.

Where is the "He was on the wrong side of the issues" excuse?

Carter's Presidency was ended with a crash in the desert of the Iranian rescue mission. If that mission had been successful, he would have won in a landslide.

"I'm sorry, he sucked," said Maher last night. "He looked tired. He had trouble getting his answers out. Looks like he took my million and spent it all on weed!"

More to the point, Walter Mondale smoked Reagan in their first debate. There was much excitement in Democrat land, and everyone proclaimed it was finally a real horse race. The Mondale campaign has new life!!

Didn't quite work out that way, and it's not going to work out that way this time, either.

This. Dood is GREAT when he has a teleprompter with speeches written for him (provided the teleprompter guy doesnt screw up). He is fine when he is schmoozing with Oprah and the View chick sycophants. But put in EVERY environment where he has been hit with hard questions which require real independent thought departing from sound bites, his response can best be described as an UH-fest.

It was the altitude change being in Denver and all, per Al Gore.

No doubt President Obama is a great speaker. But he wasn't a "great speaker" during the debate. There is a big difference in talking via a teleprompter and having to answer non-preapproved questions off the cuff.

He may be better with the townhall debate. But, IMO, he's gonna have to come up with something more substantial when answering questions from the general public. He's gonna get some softballs and then he's gonna get some zingers and he'd better be prepared and not so thin skinned and distracted.
