First Presidential Debate

Could you link to anything Obama has ever said which was more detailed than what Romney said tonight???

Obama couldn't even keep up with Romney tonight. He was out classed.

Obama was 'punching below his weight' tonight.

Look, Romney put on a great performance, but in terms of substance there is nothing there. He says he will cut middle class taxes and keep taxes on the wealthy the same ... but will not reduce revenue. Uh, exsqueeze me? There's a bit of a math problem there. He says he thinks that Romneycare was right for MA, but might not be right for the other states. Has anyone ever asked him what's so special about MA that doesn't apply everywhere else? I'd love to hear his answer to that, because it's such an obvious ass covering maneuver. He created Romneycare because he thought it was the best way to reform health insurance -- period. He's opposing his plan because Obama implemented it and Republicans are (thus) against it. He says that government doesn't create jobs ... but if elected his government will create 12 million jobs. Mkay. His basic argument in general is, "I will make things better ... trust me ... but don't ask me how." Mkay.

the panel on Fox, apparently they rated Romney's point on getting along and working with both sides as the top piece of the night.

... thus smashing the irony meter.

Yeah I don't believe those lines until I see them. He had to work with Democrats in MA, but if didn't have to I'd imagine he wouldn't.

Here are a few interesting quotes:

CNN's Wolf Blitzer: "This was a pretty good night for Romney."

MSNBC's Ed Schultz: "Angry and stunned" and Obama was "off his game."

Michael Moore: "This is what happens when u pick John Kerry as your debate coach."

Chris Matthews: "What was Romney doing? He was WINNING."

Bill Maher: "Romney won the debate"

Romney clearly won. This is what I tried to warn the democrats about here--Obama just thinks he can phone this election in and he cannot if he wants to win. The foreign policy debate, however, almost always favors the sitting President.

No big surprise when "just don't **** your pants on stage and you'll win" was the level where Romney's expectation bar was set.

"Almost" might be the key word in that. Considering all the recent activities in the middle east, and information that has come about about what and when the administration knew, and where they failed.

The next one could be a slaughter...

 ironic or not, the response from the group of undecideds was surprising.

I have seen a few bits of polling from undecides and am surprised how many seemed to really be turned on to Romney. His bump might be bigger than I expect (I expect not enough to turn this from the close race it already is).

I think at most we see 2-3%. Which will be degraded by the next debate.

But Obama's strength thus far is that he has done a really excellent job of defining Romney. If Romney can use the debates to break through that.... he makes all those millions wasted, and leaves the President without much of a case.

I don't know why you would be surprised. Poll after poll over the last few years has shown that a large majority of Americans really want the folks in Washington to work together, negotiate, and compromise when necessary to get things done. The irony is that the statement came from a Republican, when the rehubs have been the most uncompromising, most obstructive group of legislators in modern memory.

I'm surprised that Romney was so able to effectively leverage it. We'll have to leave who has been the most divisive and obstinate to another thread.

The next debate might be interesting considering it can include recent happenings in the middle east. It could go real bad for Obama. I guess we will see next week. I wouldn't have thought Romney would even see a 2-3% bounce on this one.

I think Romney did at least a decent job of un-doing the defining Obama has done. It appears based on some of the undecideds polls I've seen, he did fairly to pretty well at that.

I don't think we need a thread to point out the obvious.

Honestly, both have to perform much better for the next debate than they did tonight. Odds are Obama will not come out that flat footed again and Romney will have a more aggressive stance.

Oh, no doubt Obama will be better prepared. They said the challengers tend to win the first debates because the incumbent gets to have his record put on display. Anyway, I predict that Ryan will beat the **** out of Biden. Biden's last debate performance left much to be desired. And although I disagree with how Palin has been portrayed, she is not Ryan.

Social democrat, and I guess Americans have far lower standards for debate.

We do have lower standards. Very few Americans have basic comprehension of the structure and rhetoric of argumentation and debate.
